Poll: Favorite Michigan Sport Other Then Basketball/Football?

Submitted by WolverineBeastBoy on

I just though of this earlier today, what is your favorite Michigan sport other then Basketball and Football? There is many choices like Golf, Hockey, Lax, Baseball, Soccer, Swimming, Crew, Track/Field and more! Personally my favorite is Hockey. I just love the sport and play the sport! Yost is such a old, yet clean rink that has so much memories/history in it. Michigan has done a great job with Yost. Also, Red Berenson is forsure the best coach in NCAA, and Michigan has done a tremendous job with building the program up. Leave your thoughts and choices below and tell WHY! Go blue

People in the sport at all levels revere Hutch. She's really accessible, when she's at a tournament scouting kids follow her around like she's the pied piper, she's really a great representative of university and the sport. What she's built is amazing, the sport is dominated by warm climate schools in warm climate states, she recruits a lot of Midwest kids. She just runs a a great program. I was at 2 NFCA coaching clinics a few years back, one clinic she ran @ UM, was a sell out 150 coaches at every level, 2 weeks later I was at one held @ OSU ran by Jay Miller who at the time was the USA National coach, it drew about 30 coaches.

Hockey, wrestling and then golf. Michigan golf is a great spectator sport. I attended the Women's East/West Challenge last month at Radrick, and I only counted 6 spectators. Their are no ropes, so you just pick a group and walk with them (obviously keeping your distance away from them). It's really cool.

Hockey. Proof of our hockey program's downturn can be found in this poll. 10 years ago you wouldn't have even asked this question. Or maybe it would have been "what's your favorite Michigan sport after Football/Hockey", instead.

After football and basketball I've probably been to more baseball games than any other sport. The games are super cheap, occasionally the team is good, and it's baseball.

The Wrestling Wolverines should have a great year.  Ranked as a team at #10 in the Nation, true sophmore Adam Coon at HWT should vie for a NCAA title.  Senior Steve Dutton is ranked 6th after an AA year last year and sophmores Taylor Massa, Dom Abounader, and Brian Murphy are also ranked in the top 8 and hopefully will AA this year.  Throw in Rossi Bruno who was one win away from AA last year and ranked wrestlers Max Huntley and Conor Youtsey,  who could do some damage if they get on a role, this is a very good team. Two freshman won their wrestle-offs.  This is a young, dynamic team that will do some damage.  Best of luck guys!  Your line-up:

125 pounds Conor Youtsey (RS SO)
133 pounds Rossi Bruno (JR)
141 pounds Steve Dutton (RS SR)
149 pounds Alec Pantaleo (FR)
157 pounds Brian Murphy (SO)
165 pounds Taylor Massa (RS SO)
174 pounds Davonte Mahomes (FR)
184 pounds Domenic Abounader (SO)
197 pounds Max Huntley (RS SR)
Heavyweight Adam Coon (SO)

Props to you for following the program that closely, thats a great run down. Wish I had the time to go to more duals, they are only $5!

I cant wait to see what Massa cazn do this year? Where did his little brother go, wasn't there another Massa?

Logan Massa is a Senior in High School this year and ranked the #2 prospect in the country.  He has commited the Michigan.

Taylor Massa only got beat once last year by Iowa's starter in an open tournament.  He was one match away from placing in the AA rounds as a freshman.  He should be an AA this year.  He has been beat already this year, by a kid from OSU, who is a true freshman and was ranked the #1 recruit in the nation last year.  The score was 4-1.  Sound like the OSU kid is a beast.  Rode Taylor a long time to get the RT point.

I just follow through the web.  I moved from Ypsi a while back so I haven't gone to a dual in 2 years.  They stream enough coverage on the web that I watch most of their meets.

And I'm not Krieger.  Name's Matt.  Just an old high school wrestler that still loves the sport and the wrestling Wolverines.

Awesome info, thank you! I wasn't sure if he was a committ or on the current roster.

Obviously a former wrestler myself, and coach of 11 years. Isn't it a great sport? A thinking mans sport. Half fight, half chess match. I love the technical and strategic aspects of the sport.

Are they streamed on InterMat or G1G Network or what? I'd like to watch a few...

I think the results would have been more interesting if the OP would have asked for favorite sports behind football.

When I was a student (2006 grad), the number of student season ticket holders for hockey were just north of 2,000. For basketball, it was closer to 200.

I played hockey for 13 years and that contributes here, but I still submit that it's hard to favor basketball more strongly than hockey if you're of the same era as me.

It's a tough choice between M hockey and M bball.  I'm a recent grad, and attended the national championship losses for both sports.  I grew up following both teams closely.  NCAA basketball is obviously the "bigger" sport, so basketball seems like the logical choice.  On the other hand, my love for hockey as the greatest sport of all time points the other way.

Good thing we don't have to choose and can root for them all.
