Player You Most Want To Have A Breakout Year

Submitted by brewandbluesaturdays on

So this isn't a question of who you expect to have a breakout year, or who M needs to have, have a breakout year to be successful, but just, who on the roster, maybe an under the radar player, do you want to see most have a breakout year?

For Me it's Je'ron Stokes. I loved the kids highlight tape coming out of high school. I loved how he and his family defended his words during the Freep Jihad. I also believe, that if everything can click for this kid, with his skill set, he could be a major contributor in the new offense.

The offseason sucks as we all know, so, go at it, discuss, and waste some time at work on a Thursday, and as always Go Blue!

What a great thread.  It has to start in the trenches on the defensive side.  If we get pressure with our front 4, our back four will be just fine.  Defense will improve.  It has to be Big Will.

Kenny Demens.  If we can have just one holy terror behind the front four it'll make a world of difference.  The defensive line we have + one really good linebacker + Troy Woolfolk = a defense I don't have to hide behind the couch cushions for.

I feel that, of all the current players, Mike Cox has my wishes to have a breakout season for the team.  There has been no shortage of blogs written about how we need for someone to step up from his position.  You have made it clear that this is not about expectations...but hope.

The fact that he was recruited by Carr's staff and has sat and watched the other backs get carries but he seemed to have a decent attitude kind of endeared the kid to me.  There has been no talk of transfer from him.   There has not been off the field incidences with him.  When he did manage to get on the field, he shined with good effort and balance.  He showed me that Carr was not wrong about his potential and that,if given the chance, he could be a solid contributor.

I want for Mike to have that "special" season so that he will have the pro scouts to be drooling over him.  I feel that he will have to earn it...but I think he is up to the task.

The offseason is too long.  I am running out of Wolverine Historian videos that have kept the withdrawal to a manageable level.  GO Blue!

I know this a topic about who i want to have as my breakout player of the year and that is easy. Will Campbell if Will performs up to potential our defense will be two times better. It will allow defensive backs to make mistakes for gods sakes, linebackers to blitz, free up Van Bergen and Roh on the edge to do some really silly things. And not to mention it will quiet the hype that Will is a bust. I do not think he is a bust i think as it was stated earlier he was not coached nor devoloped properly. I also think there has been way to much focus on the offense when Rich Rod was here. Now my off topic pick of who i think for sure the breakout player will be that is non other than Mike Cox he is a good running back. He showed that in the spring. He showed he has enough speed to take it to the house. He showed that if you miss him he will make you pay. Reminds me of TSIO's Chris Wells a bit. I do not have a pc at home so i am stuck posting and reading my favorite blog favorite site period mgoblog from my phone that is not a droid or smartphone so i am lovin being at a coffee shop this afternoon in downtown Fargo North Dakota. I will say i wish i was in downtown Ann Arbor Michigan. This is by far the best informational site for a michigan football junky like myself thanks to all of you for putting up with me and providing me entertainment and what sometimes is a dark hour for me lately.

I really don't see BWC playing as we all would hope, so I am going to pick Washington becasue we really need someone to either take a double team every play or destroy a single man.

I also would like a breakout year from Denard's throwing arm and proving he is a capable passer.

I think it will be Cam and Lewan, who sort of already broke out, but for the penalties. Neither of those guys will be first team all-B1G in the preseason, but I could see them both there by the end.

Within the program, I'll say Toussaint on O and Jibreel on D.

1. Will Campbell

2. Hopkins

3. Blake Countess/Greg Brown: I would love to see one or both of these guys break out.  This would give us a few years of top class DB play with the 2012 class coming in too, I would be real happy.

Taylor Lewan. We all know how awesome he can be, I hope it's this year he becomes the All American we know he'll be someday. Good for the pass game, good for the run game, bad for our opponents.

There's this theoretical player who keeps getting hyped up, but we never see him.  I'm not even sure this "Fitzgerald Toussaint" character exists, but I think it would be neat if he broke out.

Kid is a freak athlete and would love to see him on the field, flying around with that 2.7 40 speed he has. Plus his dreads are sweet and he looks like a superhero incognito in those fancy glasses he sports. That being said, hes obviously not there yet when it comes to scheme/concept stuff, but he'd be my guy.

Second: Josh Furman

Third: Matt Wile

Edit: watching the BG highlights reminded me of Tate. He might be a mixed-up goof in some ways, but I really hope he can land on his feet at a program that's right for him. I suppose it might be for the best he left, but I really enjoyed watching him play.

He's a great receiving TE, but he was turned into Richie's blocking bitch. He would have shined in the Carr era. He deserves a big yr to vault him into the league. Very unselfish last year.

I think we've got everything set on Offense (keeping in mind at least 80-90% of last year's awesomeness)

So I've gotta go D...

1.Will Campbell -

Echo the other thoughts here. If teams have to stick two OL on BWC, that frees up Martin and Roh and RVB to wreck havoc in the backfield. If Will stinks and they can single him, double Martin, and chip on RVB/Roh, the DL won't be getting a lot of pressure.

2.Defensive Back Not Named Jordan Kovacs or Troy Woolfolk

Whomever you are, step up. Marvin Robinson, let's see that freakish athleticism. Carvin Johnson, continue progressing. Josh Furman, maybe you shouldn't have been redshirted last year. Courtney Avery, man it'd be nice if we had two good CBs on the field.

3.Cam Gordon

I'm assuming Demens and Evans start at MLB and SLB respectively. A third serviceable LB would be a great, great thing.

DeepBlue83

No doubt that he's the guy we most need to play really well who never has before. Martin, Campbell, Van Bergen and Roh would be a gigantic improvement over last year's line, and a strong pass rush makes everyone else's job on defense easier.

After that, a running back, and a safety (don't care who).

Maybe not a sexy pick, but I'll go with Koger.  I think RichRod made a pretty good effort integrating the TE into his offense, but Koger could really be in a position to thrive this year if Borges expands his role.  He has TREMENDOUS athleticism.  Blocking could still be an issue, though.

yeah I would add BWC as well, always loved that kid, ever since he did that dance when he committed.  Hope he has a breakout year.

Also hoping Rawls does, too.  Out of this year's incoming class, Wile, Rawls, and Kellen Jones are the 3 I'm most excited about.

I'm going with Rawls for one because I've seen him play multiple times, and it was pretty cool to see him finally get offered late in the process by his dream school. Can't beat that feeling I'd assume.

He seems like a great kid and hopefully will put the clamps down on this RB competition.

Obviously I would like to see immense improvement from all of our players and I definitely like guys like Avery, Cameron Gordon, Marvin, and Carvin on defense but I am going to say that I would most like a breakout year from a WR. We have so many talented wide receivers that have had moments of brilliance but have also lacked consistancy.

This is not really a necessity at all but its simply what I personally would like to see.

Fitz can run both power and finesse, I'd just like to see him healthy and run all over the place.

Cam Gordon proved last year that if he's in the right place, he can HIT.  I'd like to see him in the right place more this year and pop some foo's.

I think Campbell and a couple others (e.g., Cox) are obvious choices so I'm going to go with Junior Hemingway. He's always struck me as a guy with NFL potential, and for whatever reason he hasn't quite completely put it together yet (of course, injuries have been a pretty huge factor). Depending on what happens with Stonum, I'm thinking/hoping Junior has a huge year. I think he's a huge talent, but for whatever reason it seems like he doesn't get talked about that much.

Defensively, I'm really rooting for Demens to make the MLB spot a strength for the first time in a while. I'm also rooting for Carvin...he's a guy (along with Courtney Avery) that I could easily see being a team leader as an upperclassman.

they won't be able to keep him off the field. i think we'll see a gordon-demens-ryan LB group that will be a vast improvement over what we saw the last couple of years.

Offense: JeRon Stokes and Mike Shaw. Stokes stepping up would be huge as he is a speedy WR and could stretch the defense. He looked great in HS and I think he could be really good this year.

I have always been high on Mike Shaw. He is a fairly big back with great speed. Last year he showed sparks of brilliance and if he hadn't been hurt I think he would have had the breakout year last year. I really want to see him take over the RB spot and have a great injury free year this year.

Defense: Campbell and Robinson. Of course we need Big WIll to put it all together this year. He was an absolute stud coming out of HS and I have been trying to make myelf believe it was the coaches ineptitude that held him back the past couple years and not his ability. Prove me right Mattison and company!

I really would like Robinson to step up and take over the SS position by the end of this year. I have nothing against Kovacs at all, I would just like to see a faster more athletic player at SS and I think Marvin could be that guy. Kovacs has played really well at times and has the heart of a lion. I just really want to see two great safeties in UM's future and I think they could be Johson and Robinson. I hope they pull it off.

I'm going for something less obvious.  I want Marell Evans to shine at LB.  With Demens out in the spring he did a great job of filling in.  It would be cool to see him secure one of the other LB spots.

Realistically the kicker would probably have the biggest impact.  Also, competent play at corner would be neat so teams like Umass, Indiana, and Penn State Ginger Edition can't light us up at will.
