Places to watch M games outside Ann Arbor - Google Docs Idea

Submitted by TTUwolverine on

I posted this in response to bkblue's recent diary, and I thought it warranted its own board post.

Considering that there are at least a half dozen "Where can I watch the Michigan game in *enter location*?" posts a week, I wonder if it would be useful for someone to create a Google docs with a list of locations where people have had success getting M games on tv. For instance, it could include the location of the bar, ease of getting the game available, and some sort of overall M-fan-friendliness rating. It could be similar to the ticket sales post on the board, where anyone with an MGoAccount can add to it.

Any thoughts?

Nice idea. Not sure about logistics since I have not used Google Docs (or the like) to share files except via e-mail. Would have to look into it more, but maybe an idea for someone with a bit more knowledge.

Yeah, the bar address would be good to know, maybe with a link to google maps.

I starting to think about how I could come up with an overall rating (stars seem most appropriate). What variables should go into the calculation? Should it be determined simply by the person that added it and calculated based on what that person enters, or should it be simply a user vote?

Considering the massive number of entries, as you said, I think there should be a link for all the people who haven't gone Sports Bar searching before for finding the game.

Although, to be honest, if you know where you're going to be a simple google search for Sports Bar or just going to BWW.com or Hooters.com or whatever and finding a close by one to where you'll be and calling them might just be the best idea. As I commented in another post I've never had a Sports Bar tell me "Your game sucks and isn't important so we're not going to put it on." Also, the noon EDT starting grid is full of crap games this week so it shouldn't be too hard to get a TV for the UM-MSU game.

In a college town like Austin it might make it a little harder since they probably only wanted big 12 games on - A couple years ago I was down there and managed to get them to get the Michigan game on outside at some burger joint all my UT friends were clamoring about. It might, as you said, take a little prodding, especially in places like Austin, but I think as long as you get there a little early (this is a bonus since it's a noon start - no games before you) you can get that 27" in the corner all to yourself. Best of a bad situation and all that.

I think the best way to fix the problem of general access would be to convince Brian (or an overachieving MGoUser with database experience) into creating a permanent database on the site somewhere, which is less likely to be ruined by a troll or something. Perhaps I should write him an email, or perhaps he can chime in here...

I love this idea. I live in Louisiana and would love to watch games with someone other than myself. New Orleans is at least an hour drive and I was wondering if anyone has been to Cooter Brown's? I might have an opportunity to get there this Saturday.

I'm gonna take mine down so that there is 1 solid master list.

If anyone can think of a reason to keep it up I'm game, but it doesn't seem to make any sense.

On second thought, maybe I should keep a copy so bouje doesn't go off like he did a month ago and hold the list hostage. :)

You can create your own set of maps in Google Maps (click "My Maps"). Find the bars, add to the map, and continue to save locations. The map can be made public and anyone should be able to contribute, or you can have a defined list of collaboraters.
