[Pete Thamel] OSU's Kerry Coombs (CB/Asst. DC/STC) to join Tennessee Titans's coaching staff

Submitted by BoFlex on

Per Pete Thamel, Ohio State's Kerry Coombs who served as Urban Meyer's CB coach/Asst. Coordinator, Defense/Special Teams Coordinator will be leaving to join Mike Vrabel's staff on the Tennessee Titans. Coombs was arguably their best or 2nd best recruiter depending on where you rank WR coach Zach Smith.

Coombs was also responsible for coaching several 1st round talent at CB: Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, Gareon Conley, and Marshon Lattimore.

If I had to take an educated guess, the recently hired Co-DC Alex Grinch will take over Coombs' role.

Alex Grinch was a former All-American DB at Mount Union (D-III), and rose up the coaching ranks as a DB coach, and most recently served as Washington State's "DC/secondary coach."

Combs was the Cincy connection. Not that OSU won't continue to pull top kids out of the Cincinnati area -- they will -- but Combs was one HELL of a recruiter. Just ask Sam Hubbard, future NFL first-rounder.

A mutual friend told me a year ago Coombs was looking for the right opportunity to leave.

He's a good dude and I am glad he will go be a good dude elsewhere.

The current recruiting and talent and coaching machine at OSU is not going to miss a beat with this move. To think otherwise is to just engage in wishful thinking. Going to the NFL is an obvious step up for this coach and another limb on the Meyer coaching tree.

And they will still get top 5 recruiting classes every year. Good coaches leave Good programs for better opportunities. It happens with Michigan too. We just need shea to be eligible that is all I want. Winning cures all.
