This will be your thread for hot takes and snowflakes regarding the defense and defensive playcalling against PSU.

So what would be your plan to make sure Hamler is covered and also make sure everyone is on the same page with their responsibilities everywhere else? It’s nearly impossible to guarantee your ideal matchup. Hell, it happened in the nfl and that’s next level guys putting in more then 2.5 years in a system.

This game is on Don Brown. He sacrifices coverage for pressure, which always fails against good teams, against a roster of good-to-elite athletes. We will never win the big games with Don Brown as defensive coordinator.

Defense wins championships by winning big games against elite athletes. Don Brown's defense is fundamentally not designed to do that. Which of course means, no championships at UM while DB is here.

Give us the best athletes in the world to cover guys and I still take pressuring the qb into a quick decision over having to cover Hamler for seconds on seconds. These takes about Brown are unwarranted in my opinion. He held them to under 300 yards and they had to be spot on perfect on two chunk throws to get it. It’s was a perfect storm for them to get 28. Our defense played a lot better then the score. And only how they played would have given us the shot it did. We had bad luck. Up against bad calls. Lost one turnover. Period. I’d love to see everyone’s plan for covering Hamler too by the way. Would take us 3 hours to line up. You know they get to decide when to snap it right?

Good enough chief. Holding anyone under 300 is good. Penn state might not be in the playoffs, but, their a legit team.  Iowa did it their way and never gave their offense a shot. We got it back to the o plenty of times. It’s two different ways to defend. Iowa is ultra safe and teams grind down the field. I’m glad we don’t have to watch that. You’re going to be disappointed if your looking for someone to have a perfect d

I agree that the Hamler match ups were puzzling at best. Another consistent flaw I see from Brown is that he leaves the middle of the field wide open when a running qb sends 5 wideouts and it's always an easy 5-10 yards for a qb designed run.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but scoring 21 points when they needed to score 29 is what cost them the game. Especially in a game where the offense had way more plays/snaps than PSU.

But, sure, officiating.

Or, yeah, Bell sucks. (Not the entire offense who couldn’t score with 4 plays inside the 5 yard line.)

Seriously, what's Brown's problem? It's very simple. Just cover Hamler with your fastest corner, and cover the middle when there are 5-wides. Also, be sure to stop slot-fades as well as the slants that counter it. Make sure you have your safeties available to stop the run. And you've gotta play a zone to stop the mesh crossers... but wait, then Hamler would be able to find a safety in coverage. Either way, gotta have a beefy defensive line and LBs to stop a man ball outfit like Wisconsin and also be extremely fast sideline to sideline to corral perimeter based spread stuff.

Fire Don Brown. Anybody can do better despite the fact that statistically almost nobody ever does any better. This is really simple because I watched TV drunk last night and I know my shit.

As a rival fan, I have to say I don't understand the Don Brown complaints. I've felt for years, back to his BC days, that the guy can flat out coach. A top-10 DC.

The Hamler kid took a quick slant 90-yards against OSU for a TD last year. 90 yards, that's not a misprint. Pretty much the same OSU DB's in on that play that are playing this year. Hamler is just a great player.

Also, maybe PSU dialed up a great play call that caught UM off stride. It happens......
