it’s not for…

it’s not for everyone. The debate is about not being able to make the choice. Not the decision itself. As soon as that is understood, more productive conversations can take place. Just from my observation.

your tone here will only adhere to one side. Want to make a point? Understand the argument better.
this is coming from someone that thinks the vaccine is good and masks do make a difference. Also could care less if anyone around me had either or not.

Again I’m baffled by a lot…

Again I’m baffled by a lot of takes against my post. You can take a magnify glass to this game and find things done that lost the game. I can find more out of anyones control. The fact of the matter is we played better. How is that bad coaching? Hell, If you want a legitimate complaint, I’d say the rutgers game was worse. We were outplayed there. But, we won. One little break our way would have won this game and the hilarious thing is the entire mood here would be “this is special”. Just like if JT was called short, Harbaugh COULD win the big games. These narratives are made up by overreacting fans and sports writers. Like I had said originally. I felt confident with both sides of the ball watching that game. My only fear was some bullshit happening that factored in. It did. At a comical level. So relax and just cheer for the team. Let people that want to win as much as you focus on that. They are fully capable of doing a good job. Appreciate seeing a competitive team every week. Enjoy the special times and just say “ah shit” when this happens.

there is a shit ton of factors that make great teams. Stop focusing and shining a light on a fraction of it. It doesn’t help. if it were just coaching and five stars, Clemson wouldn’t be a 3 loss disaster this year

and trust me. I know others have different opinions. I know I’m not changing your mind and you won’t be changing mine. I take from personal experience where consistency is pivotal, even when results come in waves.

We seem to have been focused…

We seem to have been focused on getting better than the teams we should have always been better than in the RichRod Hoke days. Have to take that step first.  OSU has been a machine for years, going back to Tressel. They can afford to stare at us. The last decade, you would have had to literally be a national championship contender to beat them. 2016 was the closest we've been and that was a game.

So what would be your plan…

So what would be your plan to make sure Hamler is covered and also make sure everyone is on the same page with their responsibilities everywhere else? It’s nearly impossible to guarantee your ideal matchup. Hell, it happened in the nfl and that’s next level guys putting in more then 2.5 years in a system.

Good enough chief. Holding…

Good enough chief. Holding anyone under 300 is good. Penn state might not be in the playoffs, but, their a legit team.  Iowa did it their way and never gave their offense a shot. We got it back to the o plenty of times. It’s two different ways to defend. Iowa is ultra safe and teams grind down the field. I’m glad we don’t have to watch that. You’re going to be disappointed if your looking for someone to have a perfect d

Give us the best athletes in…

Give us the best athletes in the world to cover guys and I still take pressuring the qb into a quick decision over having to cover Hamler for seconds on seconds. These takes about Brown are unwarranted in my opinion. He held them to under 300 yards and they had to be spot on perfect on two chunk throws to get it. It’s was a perfect storm for them to get 28. Our defense played a lot better then the score. And only how they played would have given us the shot it did. We had bad luck. Up against bad calls. Lost one turnover. Period. I’d love to see everyone’s plan for covering Hamler too by the way. Would take us 3 hours to line up. You know they get to decide when to snap it right?

Do you think we remotely…

Do you think we remotely come close to pressuring the qb without the coverage we run? And I get it’s frustrating seeing Hamler hit a big play. But at least once it took a perfect pass and the other looks like a bust to me. I also would love to have an ideal guy covering him every time. But you sacrifice that for making sure you are lined up right. It’s very Monday morning qb to say what matchup you want. If they came out and said “fade to kJ” you have more of a point.

The difference tonight is we…

The difference tonight is we were able to execute enough to have a flow to the offense. Still not crisp. Drops killed us. Especially because they weren’t caused, but, unforced errors. Shea is still like a first year starter. Very sharp when he’s confident where to go with the ball. He’s in a funk with no feel in a pocket. I’d love to see that clock in his head include a couple ticks in the pocket. It’s first read, survey rushers, find an exit, then look up again right now. The guys are giving him those extra ticks consistently. He’s got to force himself to stay focused downfield while flowing up. Do that and then find an exit to run.

Everyone realizes that the…

Everyone realizes that the same coverage their bitching about is the reason we are hammering the qb so much right?  I get it. I hate seeing big plays against not ideal guys, but, I’d take perfect passes like the TE one and hamlers first all day over the alternatives. No easy throw crosses tonight. No safe long drives where our offense probably never sees the field enough to get any rhythm. I have to believe the last td was some type of bust or miscommunication. Which, happens a lot more then people realize, just doesn’t get exposed every time to notice. Both ways. We held them under 300 yards, had to deal with our turnover, had to deal with drive extenders in black and white stripes. I’ll take it. PSU is lucky as hell to walk out with 28 and I think that’s their optimal possible score if you run it back 10 times over.

BTW. Don Brown’s shit…

BTW. Don Brown’s shit defense everyone is screaming about held Penn State to under 300 yards. Two perfect passes beat man coverage. More positive with the rush from that coverage then the negative. If we play it safer, we never see the ball enough to do what we did. I’d take teams having to hit those shots perfectly all day over watching throws my daughter can make to a guy in mountains of space. Refs stole this game from us. And we made a step forward on offensive from dumpster fire to executing and now need to become crisp.

I hate these stats about…

I hate these stats about record vs top whatever teams. You know what Michigan has been the last 5 years? Good. Not great. Good. But good beats not good. And after a few wins over not good, you think they might be great. And when you realize your not great. You blow it up and start over. And because of that, you lose the thing that has teams like Clemson rolling. Consistency. They knew who they were. Rolled with the adversities (granted, fortunate to not have to answer to overreactions to games against msu or osu) and are running better and better players through a system they never gave up on.

that’s what Carr had. Years (with small tweaks throughout) of the same system. From bo to moeller to carr. No one blew up anything.

that’s the only thing I fault Harbaugh for. He hasn’t shown he’s committed to anything so much he’s willing to live through the lumps. Maybe this offense is it?

i had a high school coach that coached a sport for nearly 40 years now. He’s run the same program every year. He’s won state championships in 3 different decades. Bad years in between, but, consistency paired with a good Class of athletes produces. Each decade a new “way” becomes the hype and we all think the sport has passed him by. And then he wins it all, his way. Because he’s convinced so much that his way works...that it works.

But there is also no chance…

But there is also no chance to regain anything when your right back on the field. It’s clear they are recruiting for speed on D. We’ve got 40 DE’s and Mazi. And I get it, that’s what’s needed to defend spreads. Not what Wisconsin throws at you. So you have to find a way to make it work for that game too. There is no way it can with this offense supporting it. He’ll. Even if it was clicking it doesn’t. We could have only won today in a shootout. The defense was not winning this game.

Why waste the bullets? I…

Why waste the bullets? I think what we’d ask them to do now will change if we continue down a path of a new offense. (Which I’m not against) And they wouldn’t have won us that game. Maybe if the offense clicks, they’d help odds then. When’s that happening though?

I’m a huge proponent of…

I’m a huge proponent of consistency. That mixed with the right group of kids/men (which the RIGHT group is very much a luck thing paired with also high athletes) gives you the best shot. Change resets your program. Is harbaughs culture need a reset? I think that’s what he’s most accountable for and I haven’t decided. I like our program. We value student athletes. We do things right. But, I am tired of hearing the same talk after coming up short.

Those guys will excel…

Those guys will excel against some teams. Horrible matchup for Wisconsin. HORRIBLE tackling today by everyone. Lots of guys were in bad spots for who they are.

I honestly think if we never…

I honestly think if we never changed the offense, we would have had more success today, kept it closer and gave us a realistic shot. Not win, because we flat out got outplayed, but, a shot.

again, doesn’t mean it’s the right call, just is what it is with the change.

I think they’d be great…

I think they’d be great. Imagine if things were clicking and you had those guys both receiving and making blocks down field?  #speedinspace is not a bad concept in its own. Shea is a noodle right now and pressing. That hurts. McCaffrey looks uncomfortable too, but, seems can make those safer option plays to keep things moving. I just think we sacrificed a defense for a new offense. And it’s going to be bad. I just hope they realize we can’t keep doing what we are quickly

I agree, but, i wonder if…

I agree, but, i wonder if that’s unrealistic in college football. You have to be who you are. Would you change the entire offense on a per game basis? I think you have to pick one, be as good as possible with it and figure out what the negatives are from there. Then decide what you are doing on the other side of the ball that helps make up for the negative.

Yeah. We had to listed to …

Yeah. We had to listed to “find the bubble” from klatt during the army game and there it was again. Are we that easy?

Electric in what they are…

Electric in what they are doing now. Or. Safe like in previous seasons. Just to clarify.

But look at our recruiting…

But look at our recruiting. Size is secondary to speed. Kemp got moved all over today. Great player. He’ll be great in other games, but, against Wisconsin...5 Versions of him rotating does nothing more. We can be grinded against with this defense period. And it means your offense HAS to be electric

Give it some time and I…

Give it some time and I think you’ll see lewen is not completely on his level, but, team wise. I’d love to see panteleo at 49. Wouldn’t be able to for a few months. Not sure if they want to make a run at anything this year or save some bullets for the future with Paris, lewen and Silva (since Silva doesn’t have a clear spot right now)

Still a lot to work out…

Still a lot to work out lineup wise. I personally think they have an exciting future a head of them. Could be a very interesting year and some possible weight changes. Pantelos spot being the most interesting.

Not meant as a snide remark,

Not meant as a snide remark, more inquisitive. But, what would your concern be for having unvaccinated kids around yours if yours have been?

Should have been called one of two way. Reversal, escape, takedown. A 4-1 exchange. Or, escape takedown. A 3-0 exchange. I've officiated with one of those guys on multiple occasions. The fact it didn't get worked out is not a surprise. One of the reasons I got out of that part of the sport has to do with how some other officials think. Until they realize officiating is not a sport in itself, moments like this won't change. they're are some very good guys. But, they are more few then the stubborn. And this isn't just in NCAA officiating. It's throughout the sport to the Olympic level.

I don't know exactly.  But,

I don't know exactly.  But, no use in rushing him back if its injury related.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was battling some weight issues as well.

Here is the Rankings from intermat.

Huge pick-up.  For all the positive rankings on him as a recruit, I still think they fall short of just how big of a prospect he is.  Not only are they getting the best in-state kid, but, also from a school packed with more D-1 talent.

I was getting together some stuff for a season preview and was going to touch on recruiting and how important of a pickup he would be.  This is big step for the program to stick its nose into the national scene.

be kinda careful of that.  I

be kinda careful of that.  I made a trip to Iowa one year with plans of scalping and couldnt find a thing until well into the opening quarter.  ended up dropping $100 for single seats.  (worth every penny, we won in OT) The student tickets require student id to enter.  They do have student tickets where you have to walk in with a student.

My wife's family has season tickets to iowa and I haven't missed an Iowa Michigan game in many years. Ive been told the michigan game is like a super bowl in Iowa City to hawkeye fans.

D-1 Programs get 9.9

D-1 Programs get 9.9 Scholarships that the coach can allocate however he see's fit.  They take into acount how "in need" certain kids are from others when deciding on percentages.  Bottom line is these athletes are most likely pitching in a share.

Massa would be huge.  Here is

Massa would be huge.  Here is another one.  For the '13 class.  Ben Whitford.  Recently went out to Illinois to wrestle at Marmion Academy.  Rumors he's moving back to Michigan, maybe to the same school as Massa.  Family is big Michigan Fans.  He's the ranked 3rd at 130 on intermat with the top two already graduates.  I have no inside info other then that.  But, for some reason, I could see that happening.

Kirk Trost and Mike Kulczycki

Kirk Trost and Mike Kulczycki were replaced.  Trost had been there 23 years.  The program needed a shakeup in some way.  These were good guys that will probably still hang around.

Bormet and Pritzlaff are well respected guys nationally.  I really think you need coaches that have made or are making an impact in wrestling outside of the program.

Michigan has been stale in that reguard and in turn, I think recruits look first in other areas.  Look at the jump Penn State has made by just bringing in Cael Sanderson.  That area had a lot of talent and now they are flocking to PSU because they want to work with him.  Not just as a member of Penn State, but, for any world team and oylmpic dreams.

Thanks so much. His name is

Thanks so much. His name is Tom.  The power of prayer is an amazing thing and has got us further then we thought possible during this.  Pair that with some Maize and Blue of the UM hospital, and I don't think you could go wrong.

sorry, didn't see that.  He

sorry, didn't see that.  He was announced on the BTN as the outstanding wrestler.  But, Q would be a good choice to.

I have some concerns,

I have some concerns, however, the past couple classes don't mean you have to hit the panic button.  Michigan is doing as well as they are now thanks a lot to their recruiting class from a couple years ago.  Those guys are rFr and true So.

So much of the last 2 classes has been about depth.

I think a lot of efforts are keyed on the 2012 class.  They have one top kid in the state with Michigan's top prep wrestler a possibility.  They would be big gets.

With that said, the last couple classes have put a lot of pressure on 2012 and 2013.  they certainly need to up the recruiting efforts or else 5th in the big ten is going to be their ceiling.  They need to take their success now and up the ante for the nations top recruits.  Also building some better buzz with the program around the university would help a lot.

Michigan has a lot going for it.  Good education (big for wrestlers considering there isn't much of a pro career, unless you translate to another sport like MMA), facilities.  The bahna wrestling center is top notch.

Nebraska is currently ranked

Nebraska is currently ranked 13th nationally, which would have made them about the 5th highest ranked B1G team.  The are having a pretty good year in the Big 12 and usually put together a solid lineup.

For some reason, they create some recruting buzz around our area.

As far as conferences, the B1G has always been the premier conference.  The Big 12 is always there around 2nd.  This year The EIWA conference is probably the second toughest.  Mostly due to Cornell, The top ranked team in the nation.  It seems Andrew Benard has worked his magic for his alma mater.

I did a write up on that

I did a write up on that here:

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/wrestling-update-22411

It has a lot to do with the

It has a lot to do with the offseason strength training.  He went into the season having trained for a lighter weight.  May seem like it wouldn't factor that much, strength is strength.  But, working out with a set weight in mind plays a big factor.

Its how you can maximize your strength to weight.  He's fighting with some bad weight right now.  You can see it when he's wrestling others.  He just doesn't look the part.  At 141 I think you would have seen a lot more.

I chatted with Kelvin Jackson (Kelvin not Kevin) who wrestled and won the title for MSU at 118 when that was the lowest weight in college.  Two months after the season he was up to 160.  These guys are fighting off a lot more weight then you think.

Michigan has flirted with the

Michigan has flirted with the elite ranks in the past, but, nothing consistant.  There seems to always be a group of usual suspects like Iowa and Penn State that see down years more rare then title contending ones.

Michigan has a lot going for it and some big advantages in place to grow.  I don't see any reason they can't set being among the elite as a realistic goal in the near future.

And the Big Ten is head and shoulders above any conference.  some perspective. the big ten just about doubles the next closest conference in NCAA chamionship tournament invites.

Is your friend Matt Mincey?

Is your friend Matt Mincey?  If so, although he didn't win, he showed he looks to be a better option.

Thanks.

Wish I could make

Thanks.

Wish I could make it to more duals then I do.  The Big Ten Network is a dream to be able and catch some wrestling throughout the season.  Use to have to set the VCR for the 2am national championships once a year.

I accually officiated a freestyle exibition match at a dual a few years back that Hrovat wrestled in.  Real boring match, but, I made on the BTN, so there is my clame to fame.  He was a nice kid and the coaches are a great representation for the sport.

I just realized I worded this

I just realized I worded this bad.  When I mention x team by 3 or 4, Im meaning they will get the 3 team points or 4 and so on, not how much they will win by in the match.  I should maybe say x team for 3 points.

on your thought though, I've never seen so many big wins in college wrestling then the past couple years.  Seems I never would see a pin back in the day.

Thanks

I will take note the previews might be better served as Diaries, especially if some use this as they follow matches.  Maybe keep my results as a board topic.  I worry my interest in the sport isn't on par with the majority.

Thanks for the input

I think we'll get a much

I think we'll get a much better Grajales next year.  I think he's improved a good deal throughout this year.  Ive heard of the knock on florida wrestling before and have my own point of view on it.

I worked the Junior duals a few years back and florida put up a very good showing.  I was impressed with them as well as Minnesota.  However, the florida teams identity was looking for advantages wherever they could.  We would have disscussions as officials dedicated to florida practices in different situations.  It was a contrast of mindset to that of the Minnesota team they faced in the finals that year.  Florida, at the national team level, can be a bit too cute with their wrestling.

I don't want to put that general label on Grajales, but, if thats what he's use to, it will take a little longer then other top recruits to adjust to the college game.  Something that kids from the likes of Blair certainly don't have a problem with.  I don't think its anything on the kids, just the style.

With you on Biondo.  5th year

With you on Biondo.  5th year senior, he is what he is now.  I think we all expected him to take another step, just never happened.

With Russell, I just think he's going to live with that style.  This weekend will be a lot of fun to watch.  With someone like Marion, your going to see Russell want to keeps things slow and conservative while Marion will want to amp things up.  Dennis from Iowa last year did this and beat some guys I think he had no business beating.  Caught up to him, but, also got him as far as it did.

On Grajales, I see your point.  But, I'll throw a few things in.  First, he was a fringe 133 coming in that has since gone up 2 weight classes.  I put a little more on it then bumping up.  He's just coming into finding his weight.  Second, I think when you compare someone to the likes of Taylor and Drake, your going to be dissappointed.  Compare him to the rest of the top class that year and he looks a lot better.  I know freshmen play a big part in college wrestling, but, the ones who take off so quickly are oddly special at this level.  Eric will find his way, just needs to hit that college switch to really turn a corner.  Being from florida and still finding a weight to fit in slowed this up.

Finally, he is a contrast to russell in style.  The result is inconsistancy.  He has shown he can beat top 10 guys and lose to less.  This is his biggest obsticle and the one you see college wrestlers make the most improvement in over their years.

I'd say he has met

I'd say he has met expectations.  When he came in, the first thought was he would be at 133.  But, he grew out of that and is probably a more natural 141 right now.  But, with #1 Russell already there, he's bumped to 149.  So, for a freshmen, bumped up a weight to be on the fringe of being ranked, I'd say he's doing pretty well.  getting better to.

The Iowa dual is going to

The Iowa dual is going to have a lot of tough matchups.  I can see an impressive win......a big loss and a close one.

ruth is wicked.  He was a

ruth is wicked.  He was a bright spot in a dissappointing dual again Iowa.  I was hoping for better.  It was neat to see the place packed.

Few Reasons

Theres a few reasons why things haven't picked up yet.

1. Michigan had a real real down year last year.

I also don't think they have shown the consistant strides towards being in the national hunt enough to turn kids from looking for a personal destination to have fun or get a good education, to wanting to be part of a team that is going to compete for the title.  I think there is few accual teams in college wrestling that the team concept is appealing.

Minnesota's kid is Mike

Minnesota's kid is Mike Thorn. Kellen beat him earlier this year 6-2.  Should be a good one.
