With :56 to go in the first half of the Cotton Bowl, Penn St. has a run to the 5 yard line. James Franklin immediately calls timeout, despite the fact that he has 2 timeouts and at most 2 more plays since it is now 3rd and goal. Next play is a Penn St. touchdown.
Now Memphis has time to drive for a half ending field goal. They have a 51 yard attempt with 8 seconds left, and James Franklin uses his other timeout to ice the kicker. Memphis runs another play to get 8 more yards, and makes the shorter field goal.
Franklin has to be the worst time management coach of all time.

Beat me to it (had to rush out and get some halftime shrimp fried rice). Even if they wanted the timeouts to go over play calls, they still should run the clock down before calling them. We'll see if that 3 point gift has an effect on the final outcome of the game.

I'm not going to pretend Franklin is any kind of coaching genius. He's not. But its hard for me to make too much fun of him when he's got more to show for his collegiate coaching career than Harbaugh has. A Big Ten Championship, a win over OSU and far more competitive losses than we have, a NY6 win and likely one more today.

He's a better college coach than Harbaugh. Obviously not in terms of strategy and X's and O's, but everything else that a college coach has to do like recruiting, hiring assistants, etc. Franklin is better at and that's why his program has been more successful. I hate to admit it cuz I think Franklin's a douche and a clown.

Excluding the first class in which Harbaugh had only weeks to recruit, Penn State has had a higher rated class exactly once since Harbaugh arrived.

When we played Franklin this year, we tried to kick a 60 yard field goal with a kicker who doesn't have the leg to make it instead of going for it while down 14.

I really don’t get why this blog goes so far out of its way to rip on Franklin considering what’s on our sideline. Franklin, in the last 4 years, has two NY6 bowl victories, three 11 win seasons, a Big Ten Title and a win over OSU. Harbaugh has exactly zero of those accomplishments. By the way, PSU’s cumulative point differential against OSU the last 4 years is -10 and Harbaugh is at -66 against OSU over the same time frame.
But yet, I’m sure by Labor Day next year someone will be laughing at him again.

There is a difference between actual critiques of the coaching staff and the constant negativity, mostly from people like you. Never miss an opportunity to bring up OSU as if we don’t know Harbaugh hasn’t beaten him. Never miss a chance to bring up Harbaugh not making the B10 title game as if the second point has nothing to do with the first point. Goes out of their way to praise a douchebag like Franklin just so they can make a point about Harbaugh with regards to the prior two points. Sometimes it’s ok to have an opinion that Harbaugh is a better coach than someone like Franklin because we wouldn’t trade Harbaugh for him. Here, I'll make this easy for you:
Our program is overrated. It's based on hype, marketing, and a lot of talking. And when the team plays something with any sort of pulse, they get punched in the mouth.
The basketball program: love em. They are everything I want Michigan football to be.
Anything else? I could comb back through a TON of highlights and tell you exactly where I think the coaching staff has fallen short. But it looks like a lot of my friends on this board have already done so.

Hawt take-I came in here to make fun of Franklin and I have to sift through you and 45 other people reminding me he is a better coach than Harbaugh because he has beaten OSU and been to the B10 championship game. That is as hawt as you can get. That doesn’t make him a better coach. That means he has those accomplishments for that one season. A season that we beat them by 40 points in.
