Patterson or McCaffrey?

Submitted by MGlobules on January 15th, 2019 at 2:01 PM
Just thought it would be fun to stir the pot in a more forward-looking direction, now that some of the dust is settling on the coaching situation, by posting a link to this piece by Pat Caputo in the Oakland Press. Is he right in inferring that the job ought to be in play? Has anything been guaranteed to Shea? I wouldn't assume that's necessarily the case. Could McCaffrey fast-forward the offense in a way that Shea might not?

It will be Patterson, however I believe McCaffrey will end up being a better QB when the time comes for it to be his job.

Pssst! Bo did start freshman, Rick Leach and Rich Hewlett, at quarterback in the seventies. It was only one game for Hewlett, but Leach started all but one game.

Having said that, I largely agree with what you said. If Dylan is playing significantly better than Shea, Dylan should start. I would be surprised if that were the case, though; most likely Shea will start.

This is not Alabama or Clemson where we dump a five-star just because the next guy has looked nothing short of amazing in his time out there and has been blessed by our DC as the best he has ever seen on a scout team.  This is Michigan.

You must be joking. This is Shea's team. McCaffrey will be a solid back-up and hopefully get enough reps to be ready to take over in 2020.

Did Caputo infer that the Qb job should be in play, or did he imply it. Or did he first infer it from some source, series of events or comments from coaches, and then imply it to us.

In any of those cases, I think it's reasonable to infer from past Caputo pieces, that he doesn't know either.

I can possibly see McCaffrey passing Patterson in the offseason.   Having said that, until it actually happens Patterson is the starter.

PSA: Please do not ever link anything by that walking trash troll Pat Caputo. He doesn't deserve one click.

Having said that, yes, it should be a meritocracy. So best man wins.

I fail to see how McCaffrey offers anything that Shea doesn't. It's fine to give him some more reps and PT, but in no way should Shea lose his starting job based on either's performance to date.

Holy shit the amount of DM responses in this thread. He threw 15 passes this season! 15! and completed 8!

You all honestly suck. Just so dumb.

"Lets replace the returning starter who threw for 2600 yards with 65% completions for our backup because I saw him make a couple nice plays in garbage time... higher ceiling"

Not sure what your point is.  Guys with less previous game experience than McCaffrey have won Heisman trophies.

Patterson was good last year, but far from great.  Certainly not a difference maker at a top 10 level. And we have to wait until McCaffrey is a senior before we can expect him to do any better?  Seriously?

Harbaugh will pretend like there is a competition all through spring and fall practice but, barring injury, Patterson will get the starting nod all season.   McCaffrey will never be able to play well enough to elevate himself above Patterson in Harbaugh's eyes.  He'll just have to wait until he's the oldest.  This isn't Alabama or Clemson, after all.

Far too much talent in the QB room for this to not be an open competition. With that being said, it will be Shea. Should it be? God I hope so. He looked pretty above averageish this year. Really don’t see the hype with him.

Let's reinforce the stereotypes about Michigan's most popular player being the backup QB.

Let's long for someone other than one of the most efficient QBs in Michigan's history, seemingly set to blow up in an offense that may utilize his skills much better than the one he was already efficient in.

I've already been subjected to this drivel from fans I know in person, who are otherwise nice, well meaning and intelligent, but when it comes to M football have the opinions of dolts.

I think Shea is the best shot to go far next year, and I think McCaffery has a shot to be special, too, just not as a starter next year.

It’s Patterson but I am definitely a lot more comfortable then 2016/17 about the qb group, and am excited to see what Dylan can do.  I believe he is ready.

Here's the thing. I know everyone seems to be high on Shea and thinks he should be the guy but honestly I think it should be open. Shea was great against bad teams and defenses the offense could score against, but in big games, games that he HAD to step up (OSU and Florida) he not only didn't perform he got worse. go read the NFL scouting reports on Shea and tell me this is the guy.

accuracy issues

under throws way to many balls

goes off script too much

can run but isn't dual threat

skiddish in pocket

they said he is a backup guy in the NFL at best...there words not mine

He was ranked 19 out of all the QB's that played in bowl games this year. This was before they played the games.

Hey let’s start a stupid ass QB controversy just for shits and giiggles.  Let’s discuss benching our All Big Ten HM QB who won 10 games.

Go pound fucking sand.
