Overanalyzing Video From First Day of Spring Practice

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on March 18th, 2024 at 11:12 PM

We got these video morsels today! And God, it's great to see Michigan football players doing Michigan football things.

There's a clip of Alex Orgi handing off to Donovan Edwards and a clip of Jayden Denegal passing and no clips of Jack Tuttle doing anything, so that OBVIOUSLY shows the pecking order in the quarterback room! /s

Let us know what else you spot here.

Went back and watched some of the lesser games from last year (Nebraska, Minnesota, Sparty).

1) First thing I noticed was, holy shit, we were really good. This is an obvious take from a National Title season, but also, these mid B1G teams that used to give us trouble and hang within 10 points and sometimes upset us on a shit Saturday just had no chance.  The dominance in the trenches made all these games low variance and it was clear by the middle of the 2nd quarter that these would not be competitive games.

2) Holy shit - Kalel Mullings is a truck and a really good back. He looks like Haskins 2.0 out there, but even more physical and has some juke to him.  The Mullings / Edwards combo could be just as potent as the Corum led running game last year - specifically if Edwards can put an entire season together.  Corum was special, but the combo of these two back could be just as productive.

3) Sigh....JJ was so clutch.  The 3rd down passes, efficiency, timely runs, and improvised plays will be missed.  I think we would have had a legit shot to repeat for the National Title had he returned, specifically given the defense we bring back.  I still think UGA would be the favorite, but UM would be right there with them had JJ returned.  That said, godspeed young man. Clearly made the right choice given how he's skyrocketed up the draft boards.

if JJ came back, we are the favorites to win the title.    But that didn't happen and the obvious hurdle in the Oregon, Texas, and Ohio St games are about our offense.   If we can have a offense that can somehow create balance with the run and pass....   we win.    If either has any issues, then it simply comes down to turnovers, field position, special teams, and luck.  I still think we have the advantage on the off and def line in these games, but we have to get something out of our QB(s).  And we can't lose any game we are supposed to win.  Meaning no let down weeks.   Gonna have to bring it every week, because even the worst teams are gonna make us their game of the year.

"...because even the worst teams are gonna make us their game of the year."

Nothing to see here...  There's a reason Illinois and Rutger consider us big rivals, but we don't even know who they are.  Sparty's Super Bowl.  Michigan gets everyone's best shot every year.

Probably because that shot paid off sometimes, but those days are over (see Bo's post above)...

Was just about to make same comment.  Since the very early 70's Michigan was everybody's "circled" game, meaning we got everyone's absolute best shot.  I mean for years sparty would actually allow themselves to lose a game just to keep plays and formations hidden until they played us.  And we all know OSU would rather lose an appendage than a game to us but it went much further than that.  We were always PSU's "White Out" game.  We were almost always Iowa's night game.   The fighting Ilini hate us even though we barely know who they are anymore.  Wisconsin, if we're on their schedule, wants to beat us more than anyone.   Same with Purdue, same with Rutgers, same with Indiana, same with Nebraska, Minnesota and so on.

We would sometimes stumble against one of the lesser teams back in the day simply because when you get everybody's A game you can definitely lose if officiating (MSU 2001 comes to mind) or just dumb luck (A Train's fumble against Northwestern in 2000) doesnt go your way.

Going undefeated is really, really hard.  It's why we've only done it twice in 66 years.

We wouldnt be favorites.  Georgia and OSU would be.  We would be top 5 tho even with all the questions due to the defense.  We would be replacing 9 of 11 starters on offense rather than 10 of 11.  No known quantity at WR and top 6 OL replaced.  I know it's Michigan and we just reload on line yada yada but about 2 of these guys have gotten meaningful time vs real opponents rather than junk teams like MSU or Maryland.

Michigan is definitely the B1G favorite if JJ returns....#2 at worse.

I look at JJ like this when he took the field in 2022 he knew that we were playing for a natty thus he played in 28 straight, win or go home scenario's and he only blinked 1 time vs TCU. JJ then sat on the post-game podium and told us exactly what he was gonna do.

JJ is a special, special talent that will be missed, greatly.

Everyday since the 3rd straight L to UM, osu has been sounding the alarms. Desperately needing to win the next one.  Alford was game planning what needs to change to beat Michigan. Every coaching meeting, every plan for how each player can improve, and will be used in The Game. Now he is here sharing those plans. What a pull for a first year head coach..and after they already were 2 practices in. Cheers!

The first two players I recognized were McBurrows and Graham. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them as Captains (plus someone on the offensive side). McBurrows has the mantle from Mike and Graham is Graham.

Yeah. I’m interested to see who emerges on the offensive side of the ball. Usually, it’s a veteran lineman or QB. We just don’t have that many returning starters. I suppose Crippen could be that guy. Edwards returning is a big deal, but he strikes me as more of a lead by example guy than a guy who has an abundance of expressive energy a la Corum.

I feel better knowing Orji is locked in as the starter and knowing that RGIII is going to say something during a broadcast that will be followed by an insincere apology and suspension/firing.

So we are getting Orji on running plays and Denegal on passing plays?

I'm just glad we are getting Orji some practice at actually handing the ball off instead of just pulling and keeping every time.

Desean Jackson but Detroit is so awesome.

I think everyone who reads this site should make a shirt with their own random player and “but Detroit.” Think of how awesome that would be if we all wore them for the Fresno game. We’d be able to spot each other, the names would be all different and everyone not in on it would be like “what in the fuck is happening?”

Going to take this opportunity to say Gallon was more than good.

Pound for pound one of the best players in that Michigan football wasteland (and would be if he came along later as well) that was 2008 - 2014. Gallon had almost 1,400 yards and 9 TDs his senior year in that decrepit excuse of an offense. He was 5'8" and a better jump ball target than 6'4" Devin Funchess.

I WILL NOT HAVE THIS GALLON SLANDER!*

*not really slander, just needs more pumping up

Edit: Shit, now I'm in on this. Ignore the Imagine Dragons and yeah, this has a lot of Indiana stuff on it, but look at those catches. How many of those balls were outside of his frame and how many was there a DB draped all over him? Sooooo many great, quiet catches.

Came here to say this

Gallon was "good at Michigan"

I considered Roman Wilson to be great, and he had 1707 career receiving yards.  Gallon had 1373 yards in one season.

By saying you hope these guys are better than Gallon, you are saying that you want all 3 of them to set the single season receiving yards record in program history, a record Jeremy currently holds.
