OU v UGa -- Greatest CFB games ever? Maybe #2?

Submitted by superstringer on

It seems heavyweight matchups are getting more entertaining, year after year. The last two Clemson v Alabama games have been very good.

But this OU v UGa game... wow.  Both times had their chances, made boneheaded plays, made great plays.  Defenses were shred, but lactually seemed to play well at times.  Both teams had huge comebacks.

Texas v USC will, to me, remain the best CFB game ever.  Miami v Nebraska (1981?) was, before that, the best I'd seen.  Because this was "only" a semifinal, I guess that might ding it a bit, and it probably doesn't have the star power that Texas/USC had.  (Plus USC going for immortality of 3 straight champioinships).

So I think this is #2 to me.  But it was thoroughly entertaining and it frankly, for purely entertainment value, washed away the nasty taste from the Outback bowl earlier today.

Must be nice to be proud of your team and how they played even after a loss. But what do I know, I’m just a shitbag fan.

It's up there for sure. You mentioned a couple. The Clemson-Alabama matches were great too the last couple years. College football is the greatest sport and it's not even close.

definitely enjoyed the game. I'm a fan of good football, and that game had it. great play calling, great execution, good emotion. hopefully the next game is as good.

Miami - Nebraska was the '83 season.

It was played at the same time as the Sugar Bowl that featured Auburn against . . . Michigan.

We held the great Bo Jackson completely out of the end zone, but still lost on field goals.

The headline in the Michigan Daily said "Defense can't do it all. Michigan falls to Auburn in Sugar Bowl."

Some things never change.

I would still put last year's Alabama/Clemson game #2.

Best part of this game: I barely noticed the refs.  Not glaring missed calls and not a ton of stoppages to review plays.  Oh, and no bad targeting calls/ejections.

Worst part of this game: I barely noticed the refs.  College football needs a "TV" Teddy Valentine.  /s

What a great game. Cannot believe a true frosh QB will be in the national championship again. I get why Georgia is doing so well on the recruiting end with Kirby... they will continue to be special

One of the best games i've seen in my college football career. Gosh I wanna get to that point in Michigan football where we play in marquee games like these. Unlike one famous Mgoblog poster, who fucking tweeted that he would rather take today's loss over USC over blowing a lead in the rose bowl semi because of "the pain that it would cause".

As the postseason goes, I will say that I would definitely put this game in my top five if I had to rank games. It would be very difficult to top USC / Texas though. That game was spectacular from start to finish, in my opinion, and never a dull moment.

The Rose Bowl was definitely a wonderfully entertaining game this year though.

People here think 2011 Notre Dame, 2015 Minnesota, and 2015 Indiana were all time games.

USC vs Tex is still #1. The game was amazing plus USC entering with a 30-something game win streak and losing... incredible. Reggie Bush and VY were two of the most exciting players ever, that game had it all. Having said that UGA vs OU was great, I hope UGA beats the Sugar Bowl winner.

It was a great game. Probably a Top 5 all-time based on teams, individual player stories, programs, semifinal, etc. But might not even be the second best Rose Bowl ever. Last year’s Penn State vs USC was pretty epic. Texas vs USC or Texas vs Michigan in the 2000s were pretty amazing back to back. There was a Wisky vs UCLA in the late 90s I remember being pretty back and forth.

What a game!!  Not sure it topped UT-USC, but fun all around.  I didn't like the ending, though.  Would've rather seen OK win it - don't want cheating ass UGA and its bagmen getting rewarded.  I mean, Bama and Clemson also have bagmen.  But I'm not sure OK uses them much...

Unquestionably a great game. A great proof demonstration of why college football is the greatest sport. I have a hard time believing USC-Texas will ever be topped. This didn't, but that's not a strike against it.
