OT: Zingerman's coconut cream pie is 10/10 amazing
Sorry, I have to tell people this. Wife bought home one of these from their Next Door downtown location. You assume coconut cream pie is coconut cream pie – simple, possibly good, usually just meh. No. This legitimately shocked me. It's unreal. And it wasn't $80 like some of their cakes, I think she paid 20 bucks. It doesn't seem especially unique, I guess it's just the sum of really good ingredients. If you live near a zingerman's location, highly recommend. *goes for a 5 mile Sunday evening run*
In a world where a $20 pie is lauded for being a surprising value...
Touché. Zingerman's pastrami sandwiches are $20, cakes are I believe $80, so I guess a pie for 20 bucks seems like a relative bargain!
I'm don't disagree that it's expensive, but I will say that a good scratch-made pastrami sandwich is a hell of a lot of work. $20 really is a bargain.
Cakes and pies are typically in the neighborhood of $25-30 but comparing what Zingermans makes to what you get in most stores is night and day. Ingredients make a big difference in taste and quality ingredients cost more.
Not sure what all those starving kids in Kenya are whining about. Zingermans has a pie for ONLY $20

If they are on this board and Michigan alumni, these kids are whining because they sincerely believe that the $16 Coconut Cream Pie at Maize and Blue Deli is better.
I bet Z’s probably makes some unbelievable gravy.
Cream pies are a copout. You're just eating pudding.
Eat a nice apple or peach pie, or MBC, like an adult.
Apple and peach pie are the only 2 that should exist. Peach pie done right is unbeatable.
Pumpkin pie and chocolate silk pie would beg to disagree.
Sweet potato is far better than pumpkin pie.
Butternut squash makes the best of the "pumpkin" pies.
I haven't negged this many comments in years until you people started talking about s****y pies.
Hell. No.
Pie begins with cherry and ends with rhubarb.
Rhubarb from the back yard for rhubarb pie is unbeatable

Correction: rhubarb from the back yard plus a butt ton of sugar for rhubarb pie is unbeatable.
You mean inedible.

Peach *cobbler* done right is unbeatable.

My mom (bless her soul) made such a great blueberry pie that to question its very existance is just...WRONG
Listen to the Dr, he knows a thing or two about Cream Pies
IMO, you're on the right track. In my retirement I bake pies for a local restaurant's Sunday brunch. A well-made, from scratch fruit pie is a "real pie". However, there are good "soft" pies like: key lime, lemon meringue-from fresh-squeezed lemons, French silk, creme brulee and peanut butter-with an Oreo cookie crust. (I do make coconut cream and sour cream raisin sometimes-under protest.) Then there are the in season fresh fruit cold pies-strawberry, peach and the best-red raspberry...with a good crust and a layer of cream cheese on the bottom!
But to each their own.
Semi sweet cherry or GTFO.

Tart cherries or GTFO.
By this logic, apple and peach pies are a copout, you're just eating fruit.
Wrong. Pies are fully enclosed - if it doesn’t have a crust on top it’s not pie, it’s just pudding in a bread bowl.
PIE FIGHT!!!!!
Naw, naw, naw - banana and coconut cream are right there. I've been on a diet leading up to my son's graduation this weekend. I'll be in AA for the graduation and effectively a food tour. One of those pies at Zingerman's and a grilled Rueben is in order.

I'm going with their Cuban and Apple Pie
Sometimes I just have to SMH.
Coconut is a divisive food. I love it, my oldest son hates it. If you want to eat something that is objectively amazing, look no further than Waffle house pecan pie with steamed, melted butter on top.
Waffle House pecan waffles with lots of butter and modest syrup are borderline orgasmic. Absolutely shit for you, but sooo good.
I hate coconut with the fire of a thousand suns... and I know people who absolutely love it. But I love cilantro...
I'm a coconut lover. One of the highlights of going to a tropical country for me. Guys just selling pieces of coconut on the street. Thai curries. Mounds bars. I love everything coconut.
Did it come with gravy?
Authentic-straight from the can!
SOLD. Will try it. Thanks
Best CCP is from Las Vegas -- Emerald's.
Imagine eating Coconut Cream pie and thinking it tastes good.
Haha. That's my point!
Nope, can't do it. I can only imagine it tasting like suntan lotion smells.
I love lamp.
No coconut in this house. We're a key lime family

Harry Nilsson recommends you put that lime in the coconut:
Kermit, Fozzie and Muppets everywhere agree:

Do you take sugar? One lump or two?

“Cream pie” is my dad’s favorite genre.

My wedding is coming up in June and we're getting a Zingerman's Wedding cake with multiple different flavors. Thankfully it's tradition for the bride's side to pay for everything except for the rehearsal and bar.
