Anyone take their kid out hunting today? I took my son out this morning. We saw 10 does and fawns and he took a spike.

congrats on the successful hunt.  way to go dad.  post a picture.  last year during the youth hunt one of the avatar twins scored 6 TD's in a blow out win early in the afternoon and shot a buck about an hour and a half after the game.  i told him to remember the day, lots of folks won't do that in a life time

as to us today, in a lazy way, glassed the pastures closest to the house around sunrise and saw nothing.  we had some weather earlier today and that might have made a difference.  will do some more toward sunset.

we have virtual herds of deer here though running through our fields .  had 2 sets of bucks simultaneously chasing two sets of does and passing within 200' of the house, one set to the north, one to the south a couple of days ago.  at least two very nice racks, one in each group.  one had the whitest set of bone i think i've ever seen - and his rack was close to 18" above his head, maybe more.  the velvet must have just come off.  they're out there.

The version I have mostly heard has a yooper rather than a redneck and generic ivy league graduate.

The National Poetry Contest had come down to two semifinalists: a Yale graduate and a redneck from Wyoming. They were given a word, then allowed two minutes to study the word and come up with a poem that contained the word. The word they were given was "Timbuktu".

First to recite his poem was the Yale graduate. He stepped to the microphone and said:

Slowly across the desert sand
Trekked a lonely caravan.
Men on camels, two by two
Destination---Timbuktu.

The crowd went crazy! No way could the redneck top that, they thought. The redneck calmly made his way to the microphone and recited:

Me and Tim a-huntin went,
Met three whores in a pop up tent.
They was three, and we was two,
So I bucked one, and Timbuktu.

The redneck won hands down!

Before I bought it I debated on getting the shorter stock for him but the standard stock fits him perfectly.  He's using a 240 grain Hornady XTP and there is almost no kick.  It was only a 40 yard shot.  We had him at about 10 yards but I made him wait until it was a little farther out so he could get a good level entrance and exit.  He ended up hitting one lung and took off the top of the heart.  The buck only made it like 35 yards and left a massive blood trail.

I live in Wayne County. Deer season is all year and the best hunting is up and down I-94 or along Telegraph downriver. The Mile Roads as they pass through Plymouth and Northville Township are pretty fruitful too if you really want to do some front end damage.

serious part is that you really are supposed to keep on course and not take evasive action around the deer.

as to your second sentence, the candidates are legion and there doesn't need to be a reason. i could type 'go blue' and it'd get neg'd.  living rent free in more than one melon around here.

That's one of the first things I was taught as a young driver in a rural area.

A worst-case scenario would have you swerving (and risking losing control of the vehicle) and the deer moving into that spot, too. Better to stay the course and maybe move at the last second if you have the opportunity.

That reminds me of a t-shirt I saw yesterday in Grand Teton National Park. It had a picture if a mini-van with the stick family on the rear window. You know the one... with dad, mom, boy, girl and dog. There was a bear pointing at the stick family with a caption: “Look, there’s a menu!”.

Hoping to get out for the early doe next week.  Good luck everybody.  If we can't have football, at least we can have more chances to feed the family delicious venison.

I love this. Congratulations to your son.

I miss those days when we’d take my son and daughter out hunting for our youth hunt. Fortunately for me, my wife loves to hunt as well so I expect we’ll be spending a lot more weekends at our lease since we have more free time on Saturdays.

10 year old went out for first time this am. Saw a doe but she never stopped to get a shot off. 9 year old going out this evening and in the am. 10 year old Sunday evening.

First time hunting for both boys, so hoping for something positive.

Either way it will be quality time in the woods for the boys.

Got my stand set yesterday with the help of a mgoneighbor (whose mgowife was very understanding of us spending our time that way).  Opening Day was today here in NC, but other commitments superseded.  Should be able to be out there tomorrow evening.

Went out with my 9 year old today. He passed on a couple big does this morning and was rewarded for his patience with an 8 point tonight. He was shaking for 20 minutes afterwards. It is so enjoyable teaching the next generation to be self sufficient.

couple of does out there right now, but 300+ yds.  no way the twins are taking that shot.  we'll see if they come closer.

EDIT:  now there are 6 out there, but still too far to shoot.
