OT: World Series Game 1, Nationals @ Astros

Submitted by rob f on October 22nd, 2019 at 9:43 PM

In the bottom of the 4 as I post this, tied up 2-2. Former Tiger Max Scherzer pitching for the Nationals vs. Garrit Cole and the Astros. Mad Max had a shaky first inning, giving up a pair but has since settled in with 6 Ks over 3 innings; Cole has given up two solo shots as the Nats have knotted it up.

Who ya got?

Not sure I'd say Mad Max has 'settled in' - he's struggled in each inning!  He's already thrown 95, if he gets out of the 5th intact, it'll be a success given what could have been had he not gotten out of the 3rd & 4th...

"Settled in" really wasn't the best description, I admit, though I remember a lot of Scherzer games like this one when he wore the Old English D, lots of pitches, sometimes a few walks too many, and lots of K's---not exactly the correct recipe for pitching deep into a game.

Meanwhile, Cole surprisingly is getting roughed up as the Nats now lead 5-2 after 4 1/2.

It’s really depressing the Tigers couldn’t win with Verlander and Max.  Such a sick starting staff Detroit Developed in the late  2000s.  Too bad they had no relief pitching, shit, I still can’t say Phil Coke’s name without spitting.  Criminal malpractice by the front office.

If only our Tigers would have had an "average" bullpen from 2006 thru 2014 we'd have seen at least a couple World Championship trophies being paraded in Detroit. Besides JV and Max, we had (at various times during that stretch) Rick Porcello, Anibal Sanchez, Kenny Rogers, David Price, Doug Fister as starters and mostly garbage in the bullpen.  When we occasionally had the makings of a decent bullpen (I'm looking at you, Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney), we had injuries/bad luck.

Yes, criminal malpractice.

Big inning for the Nats!  Up 5-2 after they got to Cole pretty good...  Hopefully, Sherzer can manage the 5th, but I don't think he's got much left after that.  A decent inning will leave him around 110-115 pitches on the night.

He got out of the 5th easily, so he'll get the 6th inning, also!  That's good for Washington's relief pitchers...  That's a scary lot, that bullpen.  Almost as bad as the Tigers pen was back when Max pitched in Detroit!

The article says he shouted “I’m so fucking glad we got Osuno!”  And this is supposed to be offensive?  Please. If this is truly supposed to be offensive, then I really don’t get it. Are we seriously saying he doesn’t respect women because he F-bombed in front of a woman? Even if he shouted it AT her. What is this, 1950? I work with women that do practically nothing but f-bomb in their normal conversation.

Am I missing something? Is there context to the story that changes something? I’m just not seeing a controversy here.

Osuna was suspended for half of 2018 because he was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend.

Also, one of the women reporters in the clubhouse was wearing a purple anti-domestic violence bracelet, and had/has tweeted out a lot in support of of anti-domestic violence groups.

Yelling at a group of women that "you're so fucking glad we got a domestic abuser" after he almost blew the game is pretty bad, and shows that he wasn't talking about baseball stuff

Idk why the clippers changed their court color. How can you have black when their colors are red white and blue...

I like listening to John Smolz as the TV color man, but I sure wish they'd get someone better than Joe Buck for the PBP.  So plastic.

GO NATS!!

They have a Michigan type situation where they need to use starters as bullpen relief.  It's worked so far.  Fingers crossed.

Springer lost that shit.  Should've been in 3rd base not hopping down 1st base line staring at a non-homer.  Wonder if the media jumps on his ass like they did Açuna.

We talk about playing smart football, but Springer should have been playing smart baseball.  In that situation, just run your ass off!  A homerun will take care of itself, anything short of the line needs to be run out as hard as you can.  He probably cost them the tying run on that second out - a deep fly ball that would have been a perfect sacrifice...

Go Nationals!  They have been so clutch this post-season.  I'm surrounded by Cubs and Cardinals fans where I live here in Iowa, and they have been such smug d-bags the past four or five years.  So fitting the Cubs absolutely shat the bed in September and then the Nats embarrassed the Cards.

Edit:  I'm a Nats fan, if that is not clear.  I've only seen them play a couple of times though - once at RFK before their new stadium was built, and then in Milwaukee.
