Anything Michigan sports is on topic which includes alums

However, I welcome people knowingly violating the what is and what isn't of OT rules because I love watching people get all worked up about whether a topic has "OT:" on front of it or not as if a topic titled "Best places to hike in Alberta" is not clearly off-topic if someone forgets to put OT in front of it

So if a thread about a well known Michigan sports alum does not clearly call out that the person played for Michigan it is OT?

Next time I see a thread about Denard I will be sure to remind everyone

I'd say out of that group there's no unique role for Miller.  Glendening can kill penalties and block shots, but also take draws and put in 10 garbage goals a year.  Ott's the enforcer.  Abby, AA, and Jurco are all expected to play top 6-9 forward spots now.

Glendening is a very good 4th line center and this would only be a bad deal if he ends up injured. So far in his career he's been very dependable. Sometimes I think Wings fans are like Michigan fans, they are not happy unless they are not happy. It's like every move made by Holland is terrible and he's the worst GM in sports.

Because you cannot commit yourself to players who could be replaced by people making a third the money. Tyler Bertuzzi should be on the fourth line THIS year.  Plus LGD's contract wasn't even up until next season. We have an overabundance of bottom 6 forwards in our farm system. Use those guys and spend more on top 6 forwards or top 4 defensemen.

Also, sadly, the only way this is a good deal is if he ends up injured. Because he could be put on LTIR and cost zero against the cap. Players like Mantha and AA could filter into the Top 9. Helm could be the 4th Line Center he deserves to be. I love LGD, but no 4th liner is worth that much for that long.

He dumped Pav's to clear up cap space....to pay Neilsen until he's what, 37? He's managed to sign a bunch of 4th liners outside of that to prevent any of the young guys from getting any playing time. He still hasn't addressed the defense, though I fucking shudder to think of how that's going to look. Mantha, Smith, and Jurco for Fowler? Sure why not.

The Wings were in a unique position to rebuild quickly with a ton of forward depth and tradeable older players, but Holland held tight to the fucking streak, trading top 6 forward prospects for 3rd line centers so they could eek out a 7 or 8 seed. He's squandered all possible cap space, creating a future nightmare where they can't resign the youngers kids and lose them while trotting out Justin fucking Abdelkader at 5 million a year until 2023.  He's proven time and time again that he's very good at listening to Hakan Anderson, and god awful at managing a roster that has a salary cap or understanding how to properly evaluate his own players. He's turned into a bad Gm, and I hope he's fired before he can fuck this teams future up too badly.

Other than that he's doing great

Hakan Anderson is really the unsung hero of the Wings organization.  Holland has mismanaged the cap from the start of its inception.  Plain and simple, the next 3-4 years are going to be rough. This offseason alone the Wings signed/extended Helm, Glendening, Miller, and Ott....that's four 4th line players.  Holland had a great chance to just sign Vanek and Nielsen and fill the rest of the open forward slots with young guys.  This would have given the younger players some experience in the NHL while not completely spending our cap on players we don't need.  I'm just so fed up and over Holland and his goal of keeping the streak alive, it's a bullshit record only people within the organization care about.  Don't forget, have Holland agreed to the "promotion" he was offered several years ago, Yzerman would be the teams current GM....

the wings but i seriously hope that steve ott gets his ass handed to him in every fight he gets into this season... and i would love to be able to see the look on his dads face after everytime steve got his ass kicked just because i know that his dad lives his life through everything that steve has ever done...

And look at the scoring depth we had on those teams.  Any scoring you got from those guys was a plus, and Draper actually strung together some nice 30-40 points seasons there for a while.  I also believe he was one of the fastest skaters on a team not known for its blazing speed.

I don't think it's a horrible deal, but there was no need to "lock up" a fourth line player when he had one year left on his deal.

Draper and Maltby were also better hockey players than Glendening/Helm, etc, and played on teams with a lot of high-scoring forwards and hall-of fame defensemen where their contributions had less weight on the success of the club.

Those traits are obviously needed on hockey teams, but its not that simple. And yes, actually the wings could use a high scorer who can fly.

They have a lot of guys who can do what Glendening does. And they have some young guns that probably can do more than that who aren't getting a chance to develop or show what they can do becuase they are blocked by Glendening/Helm and the like. I like LG, but he's a fourth-liner who isnt going to add much more than he already does.

The Wings are full of forwards right now, and full of bottom-six guys. They need help on defense and a goal scorer and to give the young guys some leash. It's just another move towards keeping the Wings hanging around the 8 seed.

True, but its not Glendening instead of a free-agent scorer now. And its not signing Glendening in a vaacum. Its signing him for that long with how the roster currently is constructed and the combination of signing Ott and re-signing Miller/Helm/Glendening. Too many forwards, too many bottom six guys that contribute about the same thing, not enough chances for potentially better players with more upside.

No, but when you add the million that Miller is getting, Ott's contract, Helm's contract, and now the 1.8 million with LG, you could actually bring in a top 6 forward or second pair defenseman. THis team has too many fringe guys who are just going to keep the young kids off the ice. For a team mired in mediocrity, these moves do nothing but reinforce our perpetual mediocrity.

Miller and Ott are only on a one year deal. Helm and Glendening have a role on this team that wouldn't prevent them from adding a top 6 forward or a 2nd pair defenseman. But guess what? There is no top 6 forward or 2nd pair defenseman out there to sign unless you give them a long term contract, which most Wings fans are bitching about every time Holland signs someone. Did you really wanna give Jason Demers a 5 year deal?

I'll criticize Holland for not making trades because we have more than enough forwards and the team obviously needs help on defense. Just call Winnipeg and ask them what they want for Trouba. It's obvious he won't re-sign with them so why not make a pitch for a local guy that helps fill the need as a top paring d-man. Nyquist, Tatar, Mantha, Pulkkinen and Athanasiou are all players I would trade to upgrade the D.

I'm a diehard Wings fan going back to the 80s and WIM (and even on TMR) is becoming a cesspool like MLive and HFBoards. I understand being critical and not being happy with the direction of the team, but it's over the line when people start throwing personal insults at players, coaches and even ownership. You've been a model franchise for almost 30 years, eventually it was gonna come to an end. Sooner or later a full rebuild is on the way. It's happened to the Lakers, Bulls, Yankees etc. I don't understand why people are so surprised that the team is no longer a Cup contender. Did you honestly think Datsyuk and Zetterberg would stay in their prime forever?

No one has felt the wrath of WIIM more than Dan Cleary, a player that was a key part of a Stanley Cup run and that I thoroughly respect.  It's one thing to criticize a deal, but another to lash out at players who do nothing but try to help the team.  Oh, should he retire and no longer pursue his livelihood because the fans want a young player to get a roster spot?  That's ridiculous.  Again, criticize Ken Holland for roster management if you want.

I'm on that blog and I have never seen any character attacks on Cleary.  He's referenced a ton because of Holland seemingly giving him contract after contract because he was offered more money from the Bruins a few years ago, but took less to stay in Detroit so Holland is "making it up to him" of sorts.  Cleary references are used to show how out of touch Holland is with how the NHL is currently run.  If you have seen a personal attack of Clearly or any of the Wings I would really like to see it.  I've seen several attacks of a players hockey ability but hardly any about someones personal character.  If anyone, Ericsson has been abused on the WIIM blog the most, and that is simply because of how poorly he has played mixed with the insane amount of money he is getting.

Umm, I would like a $1 million price tag, not 1.8 please.  It's a vast overpayment IMO and yet another sign that Holland is loyal to a fault.  Happy for Luke, good for him but IMO a bad deal for the Wings.  Hoping I am wrong.

Matt Martin (4th line player) signed a 4 year contract worth $2.5 million and his ex-linemate Cizikas got a 5 year deal making 3.35 million. That's basically the going rate for good 4th line players. You're not getting a player under 30 to sign for one million. Marchenko recently signed for $1.45 million and he's only played one full season in the NHL.

Multi-faceted = great defender, excellent penalty killer with propensity to create short-handed scoring opportunities, decent passer and face-off man, and can consistently get 10-15 goals.   Fine, the Wings roster may have too many 4th line types, but I absolutely want Glendening to be THE one they keep long term.  He's young, dependable, and a great team player.

I'm more peeved at the long-term Helm deal.   I think they overpaid when cheaper options are available.
