OT: Will Nebraska have any coaches by season end? DC gone

Submitted by iawolve on September 18th, 2022 at 7:34 PM

I guess you can't blame the interim for firing the DC since he has been doing a terrible job, but it sorts of seems like the the wheels literally flying off the car at this point. On the plus side, they made their ST coach the new DC so look for more ST yakety sax.

Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander fired after 35-point loss to Oklahoma (espn.com)

I gotta think they're going to lose a number of players to the transfer portal at the end of the season... what a change from the optimism surrounding campus when Frost was hired.

Crazy how bad the Frost era went. He didn't have Jim's track record, but he had the same vibe coming in- the former player turned great coach has come home to make our program nationally relevant again! Imagine if Jim got here and went 16-31. I think I would be accepting that my team was never going to be nationally relevant again

Urban Meyer said he's not taking the Nebraska job.

Ed Orgeon is still a possibility. At least last I saw.

I mean we don’t need to go hunt him down for revenge or anything, I agree. But we don’t need to feel too bad for him either, guy was paid VERY handsomely to be not very good at a job he clearly wasn’t ready for - especially when that obliviousness could have gotten a player very badly hurt.

Didn't he botch the concussion protocol and put someone at risk? I'm going with agnostic for forty, not 'enough time has passed that I've grown sloppy-sentimental and forgotten half of his crimes because he loved Michigan.' But--hey--I try to keep my resentment rigorous.

He did - but per John U. Bacon's Endzone, Hoke believed at the time that he had only a lower-body injury.  Bacon makes the case in the book that the ultimate responsibly lay more at Brandon's feet: the people whose job was to keep Hoke informed of things like a head injury (since the hit occurred on the other side of the field) weren't working that day, because Brandon had them doing other things.  The referee also made things worse by incorrectly telling Hoke that he couldn't leave Gardner in the game even if he called a timeout, for which the Big Ten apologized the next day.

(Bacon also argues that Hoke was left hanging to dry in front of the media by Brandon.)

I mean, everybody in the stadium except Hoke seemed to know that Shane Morris had no business going back on the field after he took that hit. I don’t think it was malicious, but it was like sign one million and one that Hoke was in way over his head. Buck stops here and all that. Next time don’t be too “tough” to wear a headset.

The head coach is juggling a lot of things on the sidelines and depends on someone competent to tell him when someone needs to go into concussion protocol.  This is the case with all kinds of shit and decisions they deal with.

I have absolutely no respect for any arm chair coaches and quarterbacks with 3-6 beers in them who get to watch multiple replays while listening to commentators jaw on endlessly.

This is stupid take number 57 by another armchair manager who probably never had to actually manage anything.

He was a good candidate given his track record.  It was a good hire given the options and he was close to pulling it off.

But this turn around job would be over everyone’s head except Harbaugh, Urban, and a couple others never available.

Even Harbaugh, one of the only candidates that could pull it off, needed extra runway to get where he is today and he may need more.  But given your comment, I assume you were one of the ones that wanted to fire Jim during COVID.

I have to admit, it's been interesting watching from afar how the narrative has changed with Harbaugh amongst the UM fanbase. Probably half of the poster's on this board would've voted to fire him after 2020, and speaking from my perspective, half the OSU fan base believes Harbaugh purposely ducked out of The Game that season because he knew he couldn't withstand another loss to OSU (Covid outbreak was just an excuse). He seems to have turned it around and got a win vs OSU last year, just curious what a trip up to MSU or OSU would do to the UM fan base this year? I assume he's bought himself plenty of slack with the 2021 season.

Hey, how about the Broyles Award winner, Josh Gattis. They say he's been ready to be a head coach for a long time. That's all I got for a hot take.
