OT: Why is Maryland Playing D-2 Bowie State Tonight?
Pretty simple question. I don't think I've seen a college basketball team play a D-2 team in mid-February. Does anyone know why they are playing this game now?

They just switched Conferences so maybe that created a gap.

Pretty simple. It is on the schedule.

I think we played northern michigan so what's the big deal when it's played

Because you generally play those games or exhibitions in the first few weeks as a warmup and ease into the year. Not halfway through the confernce slate.

Tell this to SEC football teams in November.

The SEC has been doing that for several years now.
But I don't remember a college basketball team ever playing an opponent like this in February.

Michigan played Ball State in November 2006?

Kind of like Alabama football playing Charleston Southern in November.

I'm going to ask Major Tom.

It's pronounced like buoy state. But that's only in MD and TX.

This schedule is enough to drive Aladdin Sane.

Are they the Bowie State Diamond Dogs?

Durkin has got to be behind it.

grabbed this from a Maryland news website:
Although every league team receives two scheduling breaks in conference play, only Maryland chose to use one to host a nonconference game this season
Guess they wanted the game time money/revenue and didn't want or try to schedule someone tougher.

Because you touch yourself at night.

We should note that, in reality, this is the answer to a lot of questions, but more importantly, it is also the solution to a lot of things. We can only hope that Maryland doesn't decide to solve a problem on the court in quite this way because perhaps they want to play Bowie State again in the future and how would that look to your visitors.

I wish we played Concordia on Saturday

I’d imagine at least part of it has to do with it being Black History Month. Bowie State is Maryland's oldest historically black university and one of the ten oldest in the country.

...Howard is maybe a 20 minute drive depending on traffic and they play each other in football. You could take the subway from Howard to College Park without changing lanes.

Bowie State is a member of the University System of Maryland. That relationship may have played a factor as well.

Named after Opie?

If they are really concerned about Black History Month, maybe they should change the name of their stadium, currently named for a known racist and segregationist.

Actually, you're a couple of months late. The Maryland Regents voted to change the name in December: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/12/11/u-md-board-of-regents-votes-to-rename-byrd-stadium/
