OT: Which College Football Coach(es) Get Canned First This Season
This thread is somewhat of an annual tradition for me to ask around this time of the year, and in the spirit of keeping things going, I'm curious who you all think will be the first college coach to get canned this season. No shortage of potential options to choose from:
-Scott Frost - His return to Lincoln hasn't exactly gone the way he or anyone has envisioned, and with a new AD in town who owes him nothing, I imagine he may be on an unofficial one year "prove it" deal. Good luck with that with Oklahoma, OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa all on the schedule.
-Chip Kelly - Another guy who has done pretty much the opposite of what was expected of him when he arrived at UCLA. Seems like they sort of turned a corner last season and had a lot of close games but if memory serves, they still had a losing record.
-Clay Helton - Boy, does that 2016-17 Rose Bowl season feel like a lifetime ago. I think Helton probably bought himself a little bit of time with rebounding last season and a top recruiting class coming in, but it seems like he's one more 8-5 season away from being left on the tarmac.
Justin Fuentes - I think Virginia Tech is below .500 over the last three seasons and Fuentes almost lost his job last season anyway, but they avoid Clemson on the schedule and get ND at home so who knows. Their schedule this season doesn't appear overly daunting.
Jim Harbaugh - I'll spare the details because we know them all. He's probably back in 2022 barring a massive collapse and losing to both MSU/OSU by a combined total of 100, but I know how plenty of people on this board feel about him still being here anyway.
Who else you got that I didn't list?
August 17th, 2021 at 5:00 PM ^
I predict the cute helmet stickers don't pan out. Harbaugh exits after a 6-6 season and blowout loss to OSU.
August 17th, 2021 at 5:06 PM ^
6-6 and a blowout against OSU will have me doing so much drinking , and I rarely drink .
August 17th, 2021 at 5:58 PM ^
Get your liver ready… feels quite possible, though 7-5 more likely If I had to guess.
August 18th, 2021 at 7:29 AM ^
I would have said 4-8 based on last year's incompetence. I think 6-6 is probably optimistic
August 17th, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
If he loses to Western, he'll be gone by Labor Day.
August 17th, 2021 at 5:43 PM ^
Who takes over, Vlad? I’m not sure who I’d pick if it were up to me.
August 17th, 2021 at 7:37 PM ^
Mike Hart will be the next head coach. It's just a matter of when.
August 18th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
1000% agree. He's the next choice
August 17th, 2021 at 11:13 PM ^
Hire a GA, couldn't do worse.
August 17th, 2021 at 6:49 PM ^
Warde doesn’t have the stones to do that.
Blowout loss to Washington week 2 will be like Hoke’s 2014 loss to ND and he’ll be a lame duck
August 17th, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
He’s already a lame duck with this awful contract. For the sake of the program we need him to either win 10 games and earn a better base or just get fired. Because recruiting classes like the one we have now are gonna bring us right back to the rich rod era.
August 17th, 2021 at 9:28 PM ^
You are so right. These recruits are not stupid. Ever since they were in middle school, they have seen harbaugh do nothing of substance with his teams. Why would they sign up to play for this clown show?
August 17th, 2021 at 7:38 PM ^
August 17th, 2021 at 9:13 PM ^
I agree mgrowold. This will be a 9-3 regular season only big loss will be OSU other two will be close games. We also win a bowl game finish with a nice recruiting class and the fire JH crowd quiets down
August 17th, 2021 at 9:25 PM ^
Blown out by Wisconsin b/c Wisconsin. Close win over PSU. And a shock-the-world two TD win over OSU.
Loss in the first round of the playoffs has people still whinging about him, but his contract is secure at that point and the whingers can continue enjoying being miserable.
August 17th, 2021 at 9:49 PM ^
He gets to the CFB, regardless of how many teams are in the field, and that's going to silence the vast majority of the crowd.
I see 8-4, bowl game excluded. Losses to Washington, a hammering by Wisconsin, a loss in Happy Valley, and a hammering in the Shoe. Harbaugh gets to stay in Ann Arbor for the 2022 season by a razor-thin margin.
August 17th, 2021 at 10:24 PM ^
I don't know about your other predictions, but I guarantee that we don't get a hammering in the Shoe this year.
August 17th, 2021 at 10:41 PM ^
My bad. We get paddled at home, then, which I'm not a big fan of.
August 17th, 2021 at 10:59 PM ^
It's become a home game for tOSU so your oversight is completely understandable.
August 17th, 2021 at 11:42 PM ^
Username checks out
August 19th, 2021 at 8:21 AM ^
How ya gonna get into the playoffs with 2 losses and not an SEC team?
August 17th, 2021 at 9:54 PM ^
Wisconsin, PSU, Indiana, OSU, bowl game are all two score losses.
And still nothing changes.
August 17th, 2021 at 10:09 PM ^
I could see Wisconsin, PSU and OSU being blowouts. Indiana, I don't know. The bowl game is a complete roll of the dice.
It's going to depend on how the others go. If they get rolled by Washington and pull out a couple other games by the skin of their teeth, this thing is going to get rickety in a hurry. And God help us if they dump another one at MSU.
August 18th, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Agree. I don’t care what the record is, if he loses to MSU again this year, he deserves to be fired. if you’re not competent enough to repeatedly dominate a terrible MSU team, we have no hopes at actually accomplishing anything worthwhile.
August 18th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
Sooo accurate. JH CANNOT lose to MSU this year, print that all over Ann Arbor. Just cant happen ...if he does, start the resignation papers.
August 18th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
a loss to sparty and Jim's ass should be fired the moment the clock hits 00:00.
August 19th, 2021 at 9:11 AM ^
So 38 and 32 is total domination? It's time to stop calculating Michigan majesty based on wins prior to Sparty becoming a member of the Big Ten, just as you count those wins over Ohio State before they were members of the Western Conference.
Much of your win total comes prior to the creation of the NCAA, the end of non-student teams, and the forward pass. These issues were highlighted when the Western Conference booted Michigan out from 1907 to 1917 for its failure to obey the conference rules.
So start at 1950 and 1917 and see where you really stand. It's still impressive given the quality of the competition, but it's hardly total domination.
August 17th, 2021 at 11:28 PM ^
I just don't think it's in Franklin's DNA to beat Michigan two years in row. Home field advantage be damned, I think Michigan beats PSU in Happy Valley this season.
August 17th, 2021 at 11:33 PM ^
Franklin has already beaten Michigan 2-yrs in a row and counting…
August 18th, 2021 at 5:48 AM ^
And three of the last 4.
August 18th, 2021 at 12:25 AM ^
I see a 3-2 start but a real risk of a 1-6 or 2-5 finish. I really hope I'm wrong but I could see it snowball the last seven games if we get stomped by Wisconsin and the team checks out.
August 17th, 2021 at 10:10 PM ^
Have Cade or JJ play above average and this can happen.
Haven’t had solid qb play since… not sure.
i personally see 8-4 but OSU loss won’t be as bloody
August 17th, 2021 at 10:19 PM ^
Year 7 of the jmfh clown show and people are hoping and praying for 9-3 - including road losses to teams with a pulse, fucking pathetic. The players and the fans deserve better than this Warde!
August 17th, 2021 at 10:33 PM ^
I don’t think Michigan is allowed to win bowl games
August 18th, 2021 at 8:14 AM ^
Tradition going back to Bo.
August 18th, 2021 at 12:33 AM ^
Yes I agree with this except we are going to beat Ohio fucking state
August 17th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
With even .500 records I think Kelly survives another year. Same with Frost. Both have been disappointments, but I think they get another year with even meh results.
Could easily see Helton being axed if things go south at all during the year. I think he is probably the hottest seat in all CFB.
Harbaugh is not gonna get fired before OSU unless they are 0-11 probably.
Fuentes needs a good season to save his butt at this point. Like 9-10 wins. However, he probably survives the regular season before getting axed as well.
August 17th, 2021 at 9:14 PM ^
Chip Kelly’s team last year improved greatly as the season went on. I think they could go like 8-4 this year and probably even win a bowl game
August 17th, 2021 at 5:04 PM ^
I was thinking Frost for the same reason.
New AD will want to bring his own guy in asap .
August 17th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
New AD to bring in his own version of a Nebraska Man
Where have we seen this before....
August 17th, 2021 at 11:09 PM ^
That would be interesting, since Frost is a Nebraska Man in the first place.
August 18th, 2021 at 9:11 AM ^
He was a Stanford Man first
August 18th, 2021 at 11:57 AM ^
Considering that the NCAA is investigating violations by Frost, and that some speculate that the leaks are from inside the program, this seems the most likely.
August 17th, 2021 at 5:15 PM ^
Matt Campbell bc Campbell's canned soup.
Oh my god I'm so hilarious!!! Wooooo! Here all week folks. Be sure to tip your servers!
August 17th, 2021 at 5:45 PM ^

"It's the best in the city."
I visited the site in the Bronx of the restaurant that was used to film that scene. It's now a fabric and yarn shop, of all things.
August 17th, 2021 at 5:18 PM ^
I predict the Big Tuna gets canned.
August 17th, 2021 at 5:21 PM ^
Clay Helton early September 5th after losing to San Jose State. Lock the thread.
