OT: Which College Football Coach(es) Get Canned First This Season

Submitted by Perkis-Size Me on August 17th, 2021 at 4:54 PM

This thread is somewhat of an annual tradition for me to ask around this time of the year, and in the spirit of keeping things going, I'm curious who you all think will be the first college coach to get canned this season. No shortage of potential options to choose from:

-Scott Frost - His return to Lincoln hasn't exactly gone the way he or anyone has envisioned, and with a new AD in town who owes him nothing, I imagine he may be on an unofficial one year "prove it" deal. Good luck with that with Oklahoma, OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa all on the schedule.

-Chip Kelly - Another guy who has done pretty much the opposite of what was expected of him when he arrived at UCLA. Seems like they sort of turned a corner last season and had a lot of close games but if memory serves, they still had a losing record.

-Clay Helton - Boy, does that 2016-17 Rose Bowl season feel like a lifetime ago. I think Helton probably bought himself a little bit of time with rebounding last season and a top recruiting class coming in, but it seems like he's one more 8-5 season away from being left on the tarmac.

Justin Fuentes - I think Virginia Tech is below .500 over the last three seasons and Fuentes almost lost his job last season anyway, but they avoid Clemson on the schedule and get ND at home so who knows. Their schedule this season doesn't appear overly daunting.

Jim Harbaugh - I'll spare the details because we know them all. He's probably back in 2022 barring a massive collapse and losing to both MSU/OSU by a combined total of 100, but I know how plenty of people on this board feel about him still being here anyway.

Who else you got that I didn't list?

Blown out by Wisconsin b/c Wisconsin. Close win over PSU. And a shock-the-world two TD win over OSU.

Loss in the first round of the playoffs has people still whinging about him, but his contract is secure at that point and the whingers can continue enjoying being miserable.

He gets to the CFB, regardless of how many teams are in the field, and that's going to silence the vast majority of the crowd.

I see 8-4, bowl game excluded. Losses to Washington, a hammering by Wisconsin, a loss in Happy Valley, and a hammering in the Shoe. Harbaugh gets to stay in Ann Arbor for the 2022 season by a razor-thin margin.

I could see Wisconsin, PSU and OSU being blowouts. Indiana, I don't know. The bowl game is a complete roll of the dice.

It's going to depend on how the others go. If they get rolled by Washington and pull out a couple other games by the skin of their teeth, this thing is going to get rickety in a hurry. And God help us if they dump another one at MSU.

So 38 and 32 is total domination? It's time to stop calculating Michigan majesty based on wins prior to Sparty becoming a member of the Big Ten, just as you count those wins over Ohio State before they were members of the Western Conference.

Much of your win total comes prior to the creation of the NCAA, the end of non-student teams, and the forward pass. These issues were highlighted when the Western Conference booted Michigan out from 1907 to 1917 for its failure to obey the conference rules.

So start at 1950 and 1917 and see where you really stand. It's still impressive given the quality of the competition, but it's hardly total domination.

With even .500 records I think Kelly survives another year. Same with Frost. Both have been disappointments, but I think they get another year with even meh results.

Could easily see Helton being axed if things go south at all during the year. I think he is probably the hottest seat in all CFB.

Harbaugh is not gonna get fired before OSU unless they are 0-11 probably.

Fuentes needs a good season to save his butt at this point. Like 9-10 wins. However, he probably survives the regular season before getting axed as well.
