OT: What else can Hackett do as AD?

Submitted by Boner Stabone on

I was thinking that everything Jim Hackett has done since taking the job is just unbelievable.  He has done just about everything we fans, students, and alumni have wanted and needed. Is there anything else he can do while he is at the healm?

The only thing I could think of was maybe find a way to bring back Michigan Replay, although maybe that might be something that is  out of his power.

Thank you!

Although I have to say that I'm not convinced that something that Mr. Brandon tells a newspaper is "in the master plan for growth" has actually been approved by the Regents.  Everything approved by the Regents is public record, and I'm just not aware of this being in that public record.

I still don't see a report from a Regents' meeting about approval of this, but I suppose your assertion that it "had to be approved by the Regents" is not unreasonable.  You would think it would have generated more publicity from the Regents' approval than from a couple of assertions to local media by Mr. Brandon, who wasn't exactly known for being forthright (or honest, for that matter).

Nevertheless, I would imagine that last season would have put any talk of expansion on hold indefinitely, until there is strong evidence that the demand is there for 10,000-20,000 more seats for every single game for the forseeable future.  There isn't much chance that they would build those extra seats if they didn't think they could sell every one for every game.

It stated the Regents approval and you would think we could find in the public recors (Regents meetings). I agree with you though. Not sure the demand is there yet.

I would like him to get rid of the double home vs MSU and OSU, it's nice when we are home, but not next season....I would also like to see statues of our Heisman winners around the concourse, something to show off our history more....other than that, he's been spectacular.

It is not as simple as saying MSU needs to come here twice because that would cost them a B1G home game.  It takes three teams to make it work.  MSU would have to agree to come to A2 twice, someone like PSU would have to agree to go to MSU twice to make up for that home game that MSU is losing by making the trip to A2 and UM would have to agree to go to PSU twice to make up for the home game PSU is losing by going to MSU.  I say PSU without checking the schedules of al three schools but it could be any upper half of the East B1G that works.

For the schedule to work, teams must play 3 in-division home games and 3 in-division away games each year.  If Michigan & MSU switched back to their original rotation, one team would have to switch both Michigan and Michigan State as well.

So either Maryland, Indiana or Penn State would have to agree to be the third piece of a 3-way switch.  Operating under the assumption that teams would want to prioritize having Michigan & Ohio State visit their stadium in opposite years, Indiana would be the most likely candidate for the 3-way.

So in 2016 instead of Indiana at Michigan, Michigan at Michigan State and Michigan State at Indiana; we would have Michigan at Indiana, Michigan State at Michigan and Indiana at Michigan State.

Indiana and Michigan State would get the benefit of having either Michigan or Ohio State play in their stadium every year, and Michigan would get the benefit of having either Michigan State or Ohio State play in their stadium every year.

He knows his first job as interim AD is finding a permanent AD.  I bet dollars to doughnuts, an AD search as been going on concurrently with the Harbaugh hire and Nike negotations and all the other stuff he's been doing.  He's lining things up to insure the next guy will be successful.

11 AM games are seriously laughable. Living in Nashville I hear it all the time... "I'm glad we [Tennessee] don't play a lot of those Big Ten 11 AM games."

I'm sure California recruits just love watching those Michigan Wolverines trounce Central Michigan at 9 AM their time.

This blog yearns for more big time non-conference match ups -- but seems to want them at noon. It just ain't happenin'!

As everybody knows, TV contract negotiations are coming up.  Since the TV network sets the game times, it's time for the B1G to think outside the box a little bit on game times.

Right now, on a conference weekend, the B1G's seven time slots are, more or less:  noon (ESPN/ESPN2), noon (ESPNU), noon (BTN), noon (BTN), 3:30 (ABC), 3:30 (BTN), 8:00 (ABC or BTN).  This can vary, and that 8:00 ABC often gets changed to noon ABC in mid-to-late November.

What I'm wondering is whether the B1G could negotiate something like this instead:  noon (ESPN), 1:00 (ESPNU), 1:00 (BTN), 1:00 (BTN), 3:30 (ABC), 4:30 (BTN), 8:00 (ABC).  In other words, push back the ESPNU/BTN "second-tier" games from noon & 3:30 to 1:00 & 4:30... or maybe even 1:30 & 5:00.

I know ABC/ESPN isn't moving their first time slot off of noon, or their second time slot off of 3:30--that won't happen.  But those games are usually big enough that the game time doesn't matter.  I do think the ESPNU/BTN games don't have to be at noon & 3:30, so let's make it easier for the Central Time zone fans to go to the lesser games, and move those back.

1.  Lower the price of bottled water to something that isn't thievery.

2.  Find the next great hockey coach - maybe Pearson

3.  Tone WAY down the overly loud and annoying recorded music - especially before the games when we're trying to actually have a decent conversation with the people who sit next to us.

4.  Help find his permanent replacement who will be the best AD we've had since Don Canham.  I respect and believe Jim Hackett when he says he doesn't want this job long term and would like to retire.  I'd be fine if he changed his mind, but we need a long term guy in there soon.

There has been a lot of attention pointed at the football program rightfully so...

However, Hackett needs to continue to support all aspects of the athletic program to continue to be impactful at Michigan.
