OT: What do you do for a living? What do you drive? Social pressure?

Submitted by dupont circle on
Although my dad was in management for the Big 3, and we always had new nice cars, I've never been a car guy. Having lived in two major cities thus far after college, it seems like even my peers who said they'd never buy a car, period, let alone anything flashy, are caving. (Where did all these Audis and Land Rovers come from?) Mid to late 20s the el and Metro have officially stopped being acceptable, I guess. Amongst friends and especially at work there is this weird undercurrent to fit in or fit out, with regard to buying a luxury car or SUV. Also projecting a certain image.

Eh, I actually see my job more as telling people what they should like. Most people who hire UI/UX specialists know they lack the skillsets to match the results hiring one can bring. While I do care whether they like the end product or not, I think that feeling isn't unique to UI/UX design and can be applied to most other careers as well.

In my personal life, I don't care what others think of me.

1. Risk Management at a large multinational bank
2. '13 Infiniti G37x, which was super fun to drive when I used to drive to work at my previous job. Now it makes much less sense to drive the 3 miles to the train station. Family mobile is a '10 Acura MDX
3. Resounding YES because I'm insecure and live in the NY area

1. Own a virtual personal assistant company
2. 2007 Mercury Milan
3. My job is to make my clients look good, no matter what (almost), so in that way yes, but otherwise no.

1. Architect (once worked as an assistant to the traveling secretary of a Major League Baseball Team; also had some experience working for a fairly progressive company that had a small, but prestigious group of clients that gave me the opportunity to work in a small office, handling the Penske file)

 2. 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible (once owned by a famous person)

3. Whenever I feel social pressure, I do the opposite of what’s socially expected.

1. Sales

2. leased 2015 Hyundai Sonata

3. Once you pass 20 years of solid marriage and raising good kids, you care little about what others say behind your back, or on message boards.

My wife drives a 2003 BMW 330xi that is VERY fun to speed. err drive. I just want reliable basic, clean transportation and leased a Hyundai for $200/mo. If you don't drive more than 12k mi/year this is a great option. Just turned in my last one. It works out about $29k for 12 years with no car repair bills and always driving a car that is relatively new. Also save money with great gas mileage. If you are looking for a new ride, would definitely check this out.

1) Engineer (at least that what it says on the door)

2) 2009 Dodge Ram (I live in the sticks and commute the back roads to work)

3) No social pressure but I do occasionally get sinus pressure due to cold.

Fly fishing guide.

'96 Cherokee (the last good Jeep ever made) or '06 Outback. The '93 Cherokee (364K on the orig engine) stays in the garage and is going nowhere, no matter what Mrs. WMW says.

Several years back, I was sent abroad to work a stint in a large city in Asia, so I sold my car. That freedom was great. When I returned to the States, I was eager to maintain my car-free lifestyle, and I have been successful so far. I do want to leave the city eventually though, so I know the fun will eventually end. But having no car is wonderful.

I'm a Directional Driller in the oil fields. I drive a piece of shit F 150 for work, but I have a 2012 Viper when home. Gf got a brand new Porsche 911 from her parents, that car is so sick. I guess I have some social pressure.

1. Handy man/moonshine runner
2. Orange 69 dodge charger I share with my cousin. It helps with the moonshine transportation. My cousin daisy drives a jeep wrangler, man she is hot. If she wasn't my cousin...who I am kidding I'd hit it.
3. My uncle Jessie is always putting pressure on us to get out of some cocamami bind

I am an Oracle/Sql Server DBA.

I drive a Prius.  No, not to make a save the Earth statement, but to put more cold hard cash into my greedy capitalist hands.  I used to drive 10 miles a day round trip to work.  I had a Honda Odyssey.  Then I got a new job that had me driving 140 miles a day.  The prius saved enough in gas to pay the car payment and put the gas money back into my pocket and then some.

Nope

1. Left sales to get an education degree and get back into coaching tennis.

2. 2010 Challenger R/T

3. Nope.  Knew I was going to buy one when they were first announced.  Green slip program made it more plausible.  And I just made my last payment last month!

1. Soldier of fortune
2. 83 GMC Vandura cargo van G series. Black with a red strip. Pretty bad ass ride
3. Only to fly, which I despise, but I am usually drugged and forced to anyway, because my boss loves it when plan comes together
