OT - What Are (or Were) Your Spring Break Plans

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

My office is nearly deserted today with many gone on spring break to one place or another.  Nice to have a slow Monday for once, too.  I would guess many here are headed somewhere during break, whether with kids or without.

Where are you headed?

And by the way - I wore a M hat on campus and people were actually pretty nice to me.  And that burger left me full in a way I havent experinced before.  It was delicious but man oh man, that is a lot of meat to try and take down in one sitting.  Fun bar though.  Think of it like a smaller version of Ashley's.

Koh Samui, Thailand for 8 days beginning Friday. Looks like a cool place. The 3 kids and my wife love beaches and I love reading so I think everyone wins!

Just returned home from a week in Kauai, HI. Hiked the Kalalau Trail. Crazy beautiful and, at times, treacherous. For the outdoor enthusiasts, I recommend it.

How far did you get?  We made it in about 1 mile, because we just wanted to take a look (rain had washed out part of the trail path when we were there), but we want to go back and do the full trail someday. Hope you finished off the week with some bloody marys at the St. Regis.

Hiked all the way to Kalalau Beach, camped there for the night and then hiked back out the next morning. 22 miles, 10,000 ft of elevation gain/loss, and 10 valleys in ~36 hours...my dogs were barking. We made it out two hours ahead of a storm that caused flash flood conditions for the next 1.5 days at the major stream crossings. We were lucky to get out ahead of the weather. No St. Regis, but hit up the Bubba Burger in Hanalei, grabbed a Coors Banquet tall boy and passed out for the next 10 hours to recover.

Hope you make it back and the conditions are better! It's worth it. I recommend camping at least two nights to give youself more of a rest to enjoy and take everything in. Hike up the valleys to see the waterfalls, which we didn't do. And don't forget your DLNR permit. They sell out months and months in advance.

When I was at Michigan in the early 80s we were so poor we couldn't afford bus fare to get me from Ann Arbor back home to Pittsburgh for Spring Break.

I'd start walking after classes the Friday before Spring Break and would get as far as Clyde, OH before I had to turn around and head back to Ann Arbor to arrive in time for the resumption of classes.

Was in playa del Carmen for 5 days. I had the shits and the wife had the flu for the middle 3 days. Got home on Thursday and was bed ridden for 3 days with the flu and still can't really eat. Back to work tomorrow. Spring break 2016!!!!!!!!

The school I'm at in France had one week for winter break and is giving us two weeks of spring break before finals. I could probably use both weeks to travel, but instead, I'll use the first one to go to Greece, Portugal, and Germany, and the second one to study.

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Spring Break, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time

Visited Zion Nat'l Park for the first time.  It far exceeded my expectations.  The natural beauty was stunning.  Crowds were up due to spring break time period, but nothing like the hordes that apparently visit during the summer.  And I hate crowds.

five days with the visiting in-laws, one vomiting child, doctor's visit for still TBD reason for the other child, one nagging spouse, doing my taxes, eight inches of snow, fire alarms during Easter church service, and a $300 brunch (whereupon said kids consumed salad, bacon, a few deviled eggs and some chocolate covered strawberries).Oh, and loads of laundry. So yeah, spring break rocked. Forgive me if I'm not doing cartwheels over your sundry tales of hookers, blow and fun in the sun.

Not technically spring break as our kids aren't in school yet,  but to celebrate my 30th birthday, and with baby #3 due to arrive in early August, the MGoHusband and I are taking a few days in early May and heading down to New Orleans without the kiddos.  We've never been down there and are excited for a couple days away before we welcome our newest addition! While I'm here, any restaurant or sightseeing recommendations?

New Orleans (French Quarter, Garden District, etc., etc.) needs its own thread and you probably have that covered. In case you'd be open to going rural for a bit, here are a few things I've enjoyed: * http://www.kliebertgatortours.com/ (There are a bunch of these down there. This would actually be something the kids would enjoy in a few years.) * http://www.basinlanding.com/ (Airboat rides ... as above, many options.) * http://www.lauraplantation.com/ (Ditto ...) * I have good memories of Abita Springs, which is across the Lake Ponchartrain Bridge (a sight in itself).

My girlfriend and her kids have spring break this week. I'm not on a school schedule for work like she is but I took vacation time and we're driving down to GA to go camping with some of my family that will be just driving back to MI from their Florida hibernation. Hoping to be able to relax for a few days at least. We leave Wednesday.

I took today and tomorrow off so we could do a few things with the kids on their week off, and indeed last night, we were at a hotel for a short overnight staycation. As they really only need a pool to create trouble, we just took them to a random Quality Inn (Dundee, in this case) but that did give them an opportunity to have a small poolside party with one of their couisins as they live nearby.

Tomorrow, we'll probably hit up a museum or something as they shouldn't be terribly busy and that makes for better viewing anyway.

Wednesday, back to work sadly.
