(OT) What's your Plan: Nukes, Pink, or Both?

Submitted by superstringer on July 18th, 2023 at 9:00 AM

Hugely-anticipated weekend at the silver screen.  Last time we had a collision of counter-programming like this was The Dark Knight against Mama Mia!  (yes, another Nolan film).

Anyone planning to see both Oppenheimer and Barbie this weekend?  On the same day, even?

Raises my hand.  On Friday night, we have 6:20 pm tickets to Oppenheimer then 10:10 pm tickets to Barbie (same theatre, different rooms).  Question, do we need to walk out the exit lane and circle around to have our tickets scanned again?  Which we probably have to do anyway, the food is "outside" the ticketed area and I seriously am going to need a caffeinated product in our half-hour between films.  "Does that come in an I.V. bag?"

I mean, who doesn't want three hours of nuclear incineration topped off by two hours of pink happiness.

Really looking forward to seeing Opie—that ‘moment’ in our history fascinates me. The book was a bit tediously detailed IMHO but the film’s previews have been excellent.

There's no way you have young children if you have 4 hours to spare on movies. I'm jealous. Enjoy.

Personally, I'd watch Oppenheimer and wait long enough to stream Barbie whenever it moves to Netflix or wherever.

Many years ago, I was at a Lions game with a few friends. It was at the Silverdome to put the timing in perspective. We were drinking the huge, but fairly cheap beers. One by one, we were making constant trips to the men's room, except for one friend. Around the third quarter I noticed he kept getting cold and covering himself with his coat. Yep, he was refilling his empty cups and putting them under his seat. I still haven't fully decided if he was a total pig or brilliant, although I'm leaning towards the former.

Got tickets to see Oppenheimer at the Detroit Science Center in IMAX 70mm next Thursday.  Getting there nice and early to get a center seat, and needless to say, I'm pretty jazzed to see this movie in that level of quality and detail.

Will likely wait for Barbie to find its way across the internets and watch it on Plex.

Christopher Nolan's films have such a huge sense of scale that I think it'll definitely be worth seeing on the biggest screen I can get myself in front of. As for the 70mm part- that's more about resolution than it is about the size of the frame. It reminds me of PT Anderson's 'The Master,' which I think is one of the best looking films of the last several years, and which I believe was shot on 70mm (although not in IMAX, and it was never screened with 70mm prints). The detail in the closeup shots of faces in that one was stunning, and I think it really added to the atmosphere of those sequences.

I might go see Oppenheimer when I'm at the beach next week.  It's feasible because I'll have grandparents that can babysit.  You couldn't pay me enough to go see barbie unless my 6 year old daughter wanted to see it, but I don't think it's a 6 year old movie.

I grew up playing with Barbie's but I'll need to hear some reviews before I go. That's a lot of pink to take in for 2 hours. I do really like Greta Gerwig so maybe she can pull off something fantastic.

Reviews are mixed.  There are the obvious people who love it for vague wandering political reasons, or those that hate it for vague wandering political reasons.

As for the reviewers that have just reviewed the film, it sounds like a good movie that could have been considerably better.  From what I have heard, Caviezel, while a very fine actor and passionate about the subject matter, is miscast in the lead.  It also sounds like Mira Sorvino is almost a non-character.  Bill Camp got rave reviews but he is Bill Camp and is never anything short of awesome.

Many are also saying that it cannot make up its mind whether it is a somber drama with hints of action, or a kind of over the top action movie about a serious subject.

I will definitely see it, but I don't go to the theater really anymore unless I am seeing a movie with my kids so I will probably stream it.
