OT: Vernon Gholston waived by Bears

Submitted by StephenRKass on

Minor note:  former Ohio State player released. From the Chicago Tribune:

Defensive end Vernon Gholston, a reclamation project, was waived.

Obviously, he was a bust, going to the Jets 6th in the first round of the NFL draft merely a few years ago. Wonder if he got any free tats.

I would imagine that the Jets thought they were getting the player who looked like an All-American and potential All-Pro against Michigan.  If he could have motivated himself in the NFL like he did against Michigan, he would have had a future in the league.

good game against Michigan.  He was stonewalled all game long except for that one sack against Jake Long.

He did not look good on game tapes and scouts didn't grade him as a 1st round.  More of a 5th rounder from what I hear. This is a case where GM/teams were enamored with his combine workout and potential that they reached big time for him.

This makes me wonder... if we all knew Vernon was on steroids (well, maybe we were biased and merely "thought" he was), then how could the Jets not know what they were getting themselves into?  I thought it was fairly widely known he was juicing at Ohio.

Doesn't surprise me at all.  After watching him so far during the preseason he did not make any sort of impact for the Bears.  I figured this could be coming. Definitely a huge bust!

I've heard this rumor so many times on this board since the NFL draft, but I haven't heard where it comes from. Is this just a runaway from the rumor mill or did someone credible bring it up originally?

Former Ohio player Dimitrious Stanley has a show on The Fan in CBus and he was just talking about this.  I don't think the rumor comes from him but he was talking about how incredibly "well developed" Gholston was coming in as a freshman.  Apparently he didn't start playing football until high school either which may explain the raw talent but lack of technique aspect of his game.
