Year of Revenge II

Very strange for a prosecutor's office to publicly announce warrant requests have been submitted.

I suspect they themselves have a concern that some of the inevitable flood of sexual allegatons to come will involve cover-up allegations concerning that office under the "leadership" of former prosecutor Dunnings III.

This prosecutor's office wants to be as transparent as a post-loss Tom Izzo press conference.

That's what has me fairly confident that the prosecutors have already been involved and that the warrants will ultimately issue.  If it were the police announcing the request, it could be that the police and prosecutors aren't exactly seeing eye to eye and the police are either pressuring the prosecutors or want the public to know that any failure to prosecute isn't on them.  But, I don't see what reason the Prosecutor's Office has for announcing the requests if there was any doubt as to the ultimate outcome.

Good point.  That, and several other signs, point to issuance of some kind of charge.

The other common cause for disagreement among law enforcement is when prosecutorial authorities think what the police are proposing is overcharging.

Smells like the prosecutor's office has been very actively involved in this from the get go.

Going to start tuning in every night to watch the new SC6 on ESPN.  Guessing Jamelle Hill will be aggressively covering and investigating this story!!!!  Wonder how much longer that "Sparty" background will be behind her on the set???

per the second of the linked stories above

technically, the police have requested warrants-------but no decision hasbeen made one way or the other as to whether complaints/warrants will be authorized or denied

1) I imagine they will announce something on a Friday afternoon. If so, you'll know how independent the prosecutor's office really is.

2) They've already lost the PR war on this one. They've extended what should be a 1 week story to several weeks at this point. It's front page of detnews today, the Blackwell suspension was front page news, etc... I imagine all next week will be a shit storm as well.

I assume Hollis came back to EL early figuring he had some days to prep the PR response.  I'm sure he's also consulted with lawyers to make sure they get everything in order once names are officially released.  Most folks don't care about a recruiting coordinator.  But if the rumored names of players are true, there will be a lot of questions from local, regional and national reporters.

all of it.  Lots of smoke there for years now and a culture change is needed.  Nothing to do with sports on the field at this point...Need new leadership at the AD level.

Not sure if Dantorelli or Izzo are complicit or enablers and that should be investigated as well, but from an institutional level this is bad (Not quite Baylor or PSU bad from what has come out thus far) but really bad as it goes across sports and quite a few years now.

Okay, unrelated, but wow: I clicked the link to the Lansing State Journal and had to answer one survery about medication, and when I exited out of the second survey (about waffles?) it kicked me from the article.  Cool website guys.

1. MSU has two concurrent sexual assault investigations within the Athletic Department.  That is a problem, because it creates the perception that there is a cultural problem within the department which allows sexual assaults to occur.  If one of these investigations was within the Engineering Department and another within the AD, there might still be a perception that MSU has a cultural problem, but we'd be less likely to believe that the Athletic Department specifically may have partial responsibility.

2. Both sexual assault investigations within the Athletic Department involve allegations that staff failed to report or covered up an alleged sexual assault.  This distinguishes MSU's situation from those of organizations in which an employee / student gets in legal trouble and 'bad apple' individuals are punished.  In contrast, it puts MSU in the company of PSU and Baylor, where members within the institution failed to protect victims of sexual assault.

Just read an article on MLive posted 45 minutes ago, that the prosecutor has requested more information on the assault from campus police before she will issue arrest warrants.

For the prosecutor to ask for evidence doesn't necessarily mean there is a lack of evidence. MSU suspended a coach because of this- they wouldn't do that without good reason. Seems more like a formality.

especially for a high profile matter like this.  it is routine to make sure all your 't's are crossed, 'i's are dotted.   if you are going to hunt bear, you need to properly armed and loaded.  this case will be charged almost for certain and you don't want a duke lacrosse mess on your hands.   credit to careful investigation and, if warranted, an equally careful charging decision.  these charges alone, even if wrong, will forever dramatically change these young men's lives.   you don't do that carelessly.

Fourth warrant requested in Michigan State sex-assault investigation

Scott Hughes, a spokesman for the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, said this morning that there is another warrant request, for a Michigan State University staff member, along with the three warrant requests announced Thursday.

“The fourth one is a non-sexual crime alleged, I believe an obstructing an investigation, and then maybe an MSU ordinance violation,” Hughes said.
