OT-Top 5 Most Memorable Sporting Events in Your Lifetime
Bored, Coors light settling in, just wanted to throw out a topic for anybody that wants to play. What are the top 5 most memorable sporting events, to you, that have transpired during your lifetime. Does not have to be Michigan related, nor do they have to be positive memories, just events/moments/occurences that are stuck in your mind for mind for eternity. The "where were you when moments" that stick with you through the years. Not necessarily Michigan related, but can be. I'll try it. In order.
1. Buster Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson. I literally thought Mike Tyson was invincible. I knew something was funny in the first few rounds but I thought it would find its level. I actually thought I was being punked when he went down.o
2. Jack at Augusta 1986. 46 years old. He shoots a fricking 30 on the back nine, with a bogey. The singular best performance I have ever seen from a golfer in my life.
3. The Horror- I don't really need to say anything else here.
4. Magic at the All Star Game 93- You want to talk about rising to the occassion. The last 5 minutes of this game had me near tears(it may have been those onions I was cutting).
5. Trey takes down Kansas - This may be my single best Michigan memory, football incuded. I can honestly say that I have never been more jacked after a game than when that game ended. I don't know if I slept that night.
Care to chime in.
Honorable Mention. Michigan v. Notre Dame, 2006. Kordell Stewart destroys my soul. Tiger at Pebble 2000.

In my lifetime? I think the stage makes the all-timers most memorable...
- NC State over Houston to give Valvano a title
- Gibson tees off on Eckersly in 88 World Series
- Penn St. over Miami Fiesta Bowl
- Texas over USC (arguably the best BCS title game ever)
- Miracle on Ice
Michigan games? The best ones have other associations...
- Seton was beaten and Higgins put-back against Illinois
- Woodson over Leaf
- Legg's wrap-around goal against Minnesota then beating CC for Red's first title
- Fab Five over Mashburn in the semis then the TO
- Desmond's catch
February 19th, 2015 at 1:04 AM ^
1. Fab Five beating Cincinnatti to go the Finals. Running around South U with what seemed like thousands of other students yelling "F*** BOBBY HURLEY!"
2. '97 win over OSU. Rose Bowl obviously won the title but the OSU game felt more emotional.
3. Miracle on Ice. Was a little kid and one of my first TV memories. Remember kids running out of their houses yelling and celebrating "USA USA!"
4. '84 game 5 WS. Kids bringing Tiger Turf to school the next day.
5. Wings/Avs in person - all out brawl. Lemieux turtling under McCarty. It is what I would imagine it was like in the Roman Colosseum ("KILL KILL KILL")

#1: 1998 Rose Bowl (duh)
#2: 1993 Rose Bowl (Wheatley was unreal)
#3: UTL #1
#4: UM - Florida Basketball 2013 Regional Final
#5: 1992 Michigan Hockey Regional final vs Northern Michigan. Happened the same time as Michigan was playing Ohio State in the basketball Regional Finals. Michigan was getting blown out on the ice and everyone in the crowd was watching the basketball game on the concourse. The basketball team won, the delierous crowd roared back into the arena and Michigan scored like 4 straight goals in the 3rd period to win 7-6 and go to the Frozen Four. Just crazy.
I'll give an honorable mention to the 2006 World Series Game 2, which was awesome in isolation, but when take in the greater context of that entire World Series was a bummer. Plus there was the whole "what was on Kenny's fingers" stuff. Still glad I got to see a WS win in person.

1998 - Meeeechigan wins the Rose Bowl to top off a perfect season
1997 - Red Wings win the Stanley Cup after a 42-year drought.
1973 - Dolphins win Super Bowl VII to top off a perfect season
1989 - Meeeechigan wins the NCAA b-ball tournament
1989 - Pistons win their first NBA championship

Honorable mentions: Meeeechigan wins 1981 Rose Bowl (Bo's first bowl win), Wangler to Carter, Harbaugh to Kolesar, Meeeechigan Hockey championships, Red Wings other Stanley Cups, Pistons other championships, Muhammad Ali Fight of the Century, Rumble in the Jungle, Thrilla in Manilla, USWNT World Cup championships, USWNT beats Brazil on PKs after Wambach scores to tie it in the last minute of extra time in OT, USA Hockey wins gold medal after Miracle on Ice, Tigers World Series championships, 1992 - Lions beat Cowboys for their only playoff win in my lifetime
February 19th, 2015 at 6:21 AM ^
- Dale Earnhardt's death
- Mark McGwire's record breaking HR
- David Tyree's helmet catch
- Jordan's cross-over game winner vs. the Jazz I think? (remember seeing it live as a kid)
- Penn State child abuse scandal

The Malice in the Palace is still probably the most memorable sporting event I've seen.
February 19th, 2015 at 10:00 AM ^
Can't argue with that.
February 19th, 2015 at 7:11 AM ^
1. Michigan 24 - Ohio State 12 - my junior year
2. Miracle on Ice - the biggest upset ever
3. Brian Griese beats Ryan Leaf
4. Jeff Gordon wins the inaugural Brickyard 400 - the tickets were so hard to get that they had a lottery to just get the opportunity to purchase tickets to an event that seated 300,000 people
5. Jim Harbaugh hired - OK I know it's a stretch to call it a sporting event, but people will look back on his hiring the same way we look back at Bo's

2) Braylonfest 3) The Manningham Game - the days where my Michigan fanhood were cemented as a student
4) Joe Carter's HR in the '93 Series. My dad was telling me I wouldn't be allowed to stay up late to watch game 7. Apparently there was no need for an argument. The day I became a sports fan.
5) The 2005 Rose Bowl - everyone and their mother watched that game, an instant classic for CFB
5) The Horror
6) Toledo - my parents came to watch that game. Sigh.
7) India winning the Cricket World Cup in 2011. This mattered to a billion people, and I'm related to about a million of them.
8) The Kick Six Iron Bowl. I was depressed after losing to OSU and so went wine tasting with the family when my phone blew up about that game.
9) The Red Sox in 2004 - sorry to bring it up, but we'll probably never hear the end of it
10) The Phils winning the 2008 Series. Baseball football to me, and M football is the only thing that really affects my mood. But it was still awesome watching a team I rooted for my whole life win the big one.
11) This time my HS football team beat the county powerhouse to make the state playoffs - I was a year away from high school and grew up in a yuppie, very Asian town that didn't care about football. But that game happened to be homecoming so in addition to all of us Pop Warner kids the whole high school was there and talked about that game for about the next five years. Good times.

For me personally:
- Game 5 of the 1992 NLCS when Sid Bream, of all people, beat the throw into home plate to send the Atlanta Braves to their 2nd straight World Series.
- Game 6 of the 1995 World Series, when the Braves won their first and only championship in Atlanta (the others were as the Boston and Milwaukee Braves).
- 1997 Michigan-ohio state because obviously. My senior year (although I did stay for a fifth).
- 2000 Orange Bowl because that was awesome. It was also my first bowl game as an alumnus, with a bunch of good friends (and strangers) at Joe's down on Weed in Chicago.
- Game 7 of the 1988 Celtics-Hawks eastern conference semi-finals. That was the epic Dominique Wilkins-Larry Bird duel which ended up a loser for the Hawks, but man - it was special.
runners up:
- 2000 Michigan @ Northwestern because I was there and because A-train.
- Michigan-Kansas Trey buzzer beater
- the Time Out (I wasn't yet at Michigan, but my sister was, so it still hurt, man).
- 1986 slam dunk contest because SPUD FREAKING WEBB
- 1994 Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook. My freshman year. It's like the entire campus just froze for a minute during and after that play. You could have heard a pin drop.
- The entire 1991 World Series against the Twins, which was at both thrilling and heartbreaking, as a Braves fan. The things I take away from that were Kirby Puckett was a man, the Braves' Young Guns were the future, and I still hate Kent Hrbek for that ridiculous play where he literally pulled Ron Gant off first base and the ump called him out. Somebody done got paid.

By far and away, my most memorable was attending the 1969 Michigan - OSU game. Second would probably be the Red Wings game at the old Olympia where Gordie Howe scored his record tying (at the time) goal, but that doesn't even come close. Others would be the game the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup against the Washington Caps back in the late 90s, a Tigers World Series game in 1968 and some of the Michigan - ND games from the Bo era.
February 19th, 2015 at 8:45 AM ^
Pistons win the championship. I had surgery earlier that day and watched the game in my hospital bed high as a kite on morphine.
Best basketball game I've ever seen.

Great Topic...
Mine would be in order
1. 1996- Michigan vs Ohio St game. I was 12 and was the best sporting even I have ever been to still to this day.
2. Wings vs Avalanche- The revenge game... Leading to the thrashing of Roy in the playoffs in Game 7. 7-0
3. 2006- Tigers vs Yankees ALDS. I was at the game where they clinched the first post season series win since 87'. Michigan also beat MSU easily that day. O the good ole days.
4. 2012- Trey Burke taking down Kansas. The best basketball game I have ever been apart of.
5. The Malace at the Palace. Ron Artest. What an asshole.

1. 24-12 (I worked for ABC that day and then was Sports Night Editor at the Daily.) 2. Mets win 1969 WS (I went to the Mets first home game ever). 3. 1998 Rose Bowl (nuff said). 4. Rumeal Robinson hits the free throws to beat Seton Hall. 5. Mets win 1969 NL East (again I was the Sports Night Editor; listened to the game on KMOX out of St. Louis; Harry Caray with the play-by-play; Rod Kanehl** as guest color commentator; Caray rooted for the Mets during the game and was subsequently relieved of his duties by the Cardinals, leading the way to his resurgence as a Chicago icon. Headline on the back page of the Daily: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Cellar. **Kanehl was an original 1962 Met

98 Rose Bowl, enough said.
Trey game winner vs KU.
Magglio walk off vs Oakland, still gives me goosebumps to hear Dickerson's call. I'll never forget that moment.
The Horror: again, I'll never forget this game.
Pistons winning in 04, another great moment...
So many, how can you list 5?

No particular order:
Miracle on Ice - was on tape-delay and we knew that the US won, but I still freaked out like only a 10-yo boy can
Michael Phelps winning 8 gold medals in Beijing
1997 Michigan-OSU game
1989 Michigan national championship in hoops
Redskins winning the 1983 Super Bowl over Miami

A few that I haven't seen mentioned:
1) Nicklaus winning the '86 Masters.
2) Tom Watson coming within one hole of winning the British Open in his late 50's
3) Hurricanes vs BC in '84??? The Flutie Hail Mary.
4) Villnova beating Gtown to win the NCAA title

My in person memories do not expand nearly as far back as many others here. But most memorable in person events for me
- Michigan Final Four Weekend in 2013 (Was my senior year at Michigan and was in the student section for both the Final Four and National Chanpionship games)
- New York Rangers Eastern Conference Game 6 in 2014
- Under the Lights I
- Yankees vs Red Sox, Game 7 in the 2004 ALCS (memorable for not so good reasons)
- All of the NY Giants games I have gone to with my dad over the years (too many good and bad memories from all of them not to mention it)

Seen in Person:
In chronological order:
1, Princeton-Georgetown NCAA tournament game, March 17, 1989.
2. Denny Martinez perfect game for Expos against dodgers, July 28, 1991
3. Red Wings defeat Capitals 4-1 to win 2nd Stanley Cup in a row, June 16, 1996
4. Celtics come back from 26-points down to beat Nets in playoff game, May 25, 2002 (with added bonus of having tickets in the same row as the then-Boston-based Sports Guy)
5. UTL I, September 10, 2011
That happened, whether or not I saw it, since I was born (1970 -- I'm old):
1. We Beat the Russians, 1980
2. The Soviets "Beat" Us, 1972
and . . I'm still working on the next 3. Maybe Dan Jansen's speed-skating gold after his sister's death and two falls. Maybe 1979 NCAA Final -- Magic v. Bird ushers in a new era for, inronically I suppose, the NBA.

I got to go to the 1982 Superbowl at the Pontiac Silverdome. SF 49's beat the Cincy Bengals 26-21. Joe Montana got the MVP. Got to the game 2 hours early, had a couple "ginger ales', went to bathroom to discard "ginger ales' to allow room for more, and ended up taking a leak beside Bobby Layne. Younger ones may have to google him;)

I've never been as pumped spectating a sporting event than when I watched Trey win against Kansas
February 19th, 2015 at 11:07 AM ^
So aside from 97 national title, I have nothing of substance to contribute to this.

February 19th, 2015 at 12:06 PM ^
I'm only including things I watched as they happened (either in person or on TV):
1. Kordell Stewart: unforgettable for anyone in the stadium that day
2. The Gibson homer off of Eckersley: still the most amazing thing I ever saw in a baseball game
3. Mike Legg's goal in the 1996 hockey championship: maximum style points
4. Zenedine Zidane headbutting that dude: couldn't believe what I saw
5. Marshawn Lynch's beast-mode run against the Saints in the 2011 playoffs
February 19th, 2015 at 1:15 PM ^
2. Being in Michigan stadium when Colorado won on the Hail Mary. It was eerie how quiet 100,000 plus fans were silenced all at the same time
3. Minneapolis final four. Cincinnati, Michigan, Indiana, and Duke. It was my high school graduation present.
4. University of Cincinnati beating Duke in the finals of the Alaskan shootout. Duke was #1 and Cincinnati was coming into power under Huggins. They won on a last second designed dunk. Awesome.
5. Seeing my daughter score her first goal in soccer. A very proud moment for dad. This one could have been #1 easily.
February 19th, 2015 at 3:08 PM ^
February 19th, 2015 at 9:50 PM ^
5. Michael Jordan's incredible, unbelievable, game-winning dunk in Space Jams
4. At the Talledega 500, after a crash on the final lap, Ricky Bobby outruns Girard after both exit their wrecked cars to beat him in at the finish line, only to be disqualified for exiting his vehicle. Greatest footrace ever in a NASCAR sanctioned event.
3. In the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied and a runner on second in the 1989 one-game playoff for the AL East, Cleveland Indians catcher Jake Taylor calls his shot by pointing over the left field fence, only to bunt and have the runner score all the way from second to win the game.
2. Jimmy Chitwood hitting the game-winning shot giving Hickory the Indiana High School State championship in basketball over South Bend High School.
1. Crash Davis setting the minor league record for home runs (well of course that would be number 1)
February 19th, 2015 at 11:56 PM ^
Not thinking about it at all and just going from my gut (i.e. the first five to jump into my head)....
MJ hitting the shot in '98 against the Jazz.
The '97 Rose Bowl game and national championship.
The 5 game sweep in '04.
Seeing Barry Sanders live on Thanksgiving for the first time.
Seeing Lloyd's first game, against Virginia, in person with that epic finish.
