OT-Top 5 Most Memorable Sporting Events in Your Lifetime

Submitted by ijohnb on

Bored, Coors light settling in, just wanted to throw out a topic for anybody that wants to play.  What are the top 5 most memorable sporting events, to you, that have transpired during your lifetime.  Does not have to be Michigan related, nor do they have to be positive memories, just events/moments/occurences that are stuck in your mind for mind for eternity.  The "where were you when moments" that stick with you through the years.  Not necessarily Michigan related, but can be.  I'll try it.  In order.

1.  Buster Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson.  I literally thought Mike Tyson was invincible.  I knew something was funny in the first few rounds but I thought it would find its level.  I actually thought I was being punked when he went down.o

2.  Jack at Augusta 1986.  46 years old.  He shoots a fricking 30 on the back nine, with a bogey.  The singular best performance I have ever seen from a golfer in my life.

3.  The Horror- I don't really need to say anything else here.

4.  Magic at the All Star Game 93- You want to talk about rising to the occassion.  The last 5 minutes of this game had me near tears(it may have been those onions I was cutting).

5.  Trey takes down Kansas - This may be my single best Michigan memory, football incuded.  I can honestly say that I have never been more jacked after a game than when that game ended.  I don't know if I slept that night.

Care to chime in.

Honorable Mention.  Michigan v. Notre Dame, 2006.  Kordell Stewart destroys my soul.  Tiger at Pebble 2000.

Jalen beats UNC in Rainbow Classic at buzzer, first game seeing Michigan in person.

Phillip Brabbs beats Washington. First game at the big house. I flew in from seattle and my best friend played OL for Washington.

UTL 1- awesome

trey beats KU

M-UT rose bowl. Awesome game. Rose Bowl. Can't be mad.

1.  Game 5 1984 World Series.  For those of us there, to call it unforgettable is the most egregious kind of understatement.

2.  Rose Bowl 1998 with Woodson's remarkable end zone interception.

3.  1980 "Miracle on Ice" vs USSR.

4.   Anthony Carter vs IU 1979

5. 1994 Colorado at Michigan (yes, I know, but the question was "memorable").

AC takes down Indiana on last play.

Hearns - Hagler 3 round fight (wouldn't have thought of this w/o Buster Douglas note in OP).

Kolesar beats OSU 1986 in Columbus.

1989 January 1 Leroy Hoard in Rose Bowl victory.

Lloyd Carr caps undefeated season in Pasadena...Keith Jackson, Proud Papa Griese, Fritz Crisler quotes about faded ribbons...tears welling up in my eyes...this is #1 on my list.

I almost listed that one.  I was at that game.  Sat next to a woman who knew Tom Harmon as an undergrad.  Kolesar took that kickoff and when to something like the 49.  Then a play or two later he took it the rest of the way.  We went out on the field afterward and his teammates had him up on their shoulders and he had a rose between his teeth.  Gives me chills just thinking about it.

Edit: Guess the Kolesar game was 1988.  This according to Cleveland.com: "With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Kolesar ran back a kickoff 59 yards to get Michigan in position and then caught a 41-yard TD pass to give Michigan the win."

Re: Kolesar --- I guess I kind of formed a hybrid memory, and thus screwed the date up.

1985 - Clinging to a three-point lead with less than 10 minutes to play and with the ball on the Wolverines' own 23-yard line, Harbaugh saw freshman John Kolesar break through the Ohio State secondary and connected on a 77-yard touchdown pass to seal the Wolverines' victory. Outcome: Michigan 27, Ohio State 17\\

1988 - A senior from Westlake, Kolesar rescued Michigan in the final two minutes with a 59-yard kickoff return and a 41-yard touchdown reception that gift-wrapped a 34-31 victory at Ohio Stadium and an undisputed Big Ten championship.

I was at the '88 game too, and that was the one I meant to include on my list.

1)1998 Rose Bowl

2) 2004 ALCS (Go Sox)

3) 2006 Michigan-Ohio State

4) 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

5) 2002 World Cup (US run)

1. 1998 Rose Bowl -- In the stands at the Rose Bowl going bezerk trying to figure out if it was okay to rush the sacred ground known as the Rose Bowl.

2. 1997 Wings win the Cup -- In my friend's apartment in A2. We smoked Wayne Fontes cigars after they clinched then drove down to Detroit to hang out on Woodward.

3. 1994 Colorado "Hail Mary" -- I was on my couch at home in friggen disbelief.  I couldn't figure out who was going to die first that evening, me or Keith Jackson.

4. 1989 Hearns - Leonard II -- I was in my grandparents house "watching" the scrambled picture with my dad and grandfather.  Based on the audio of the fight, Tommy was robbed.

5. 1989 UNC-Michigan Sweet 16 -- I was at Rupp Arena that night and two things stuck out to me.  One: That might have been the best basketball game I've ever seen played in person.  Two: The ACC chant that night was awful.  I couldn't understand the conference love since everywhere Michigan went in a neutral environment, B1G fans would find a way to root against us.

1. 1969 UM v OSU football

2. 1998 Rose Bowl

3. 1976 NCAA Semi-Finals, Indiana over UCLA, M over previously undefeated Rutgers

4. 1979 Regional Final Indiana State over Arkansas

5. CCHA playoff at Munn when we beat Sparty with Hunwick in net.

UTL #1 for me, at least as far as games I have attended. Non Michigan I would have to say the Red Sox 2004 World Series run. Honorable mentions include 2003 OSU game, 2006 ND game, MBB tourney run 2 years ago. Also Lloyd's final game was quite memorable. On another note... I have a really difficult time understanding how anyone could be impressed by an All Star game performance. Did players actually TRY on All Star games back then?

For me, in no particular order after the first one:

1. I was at the UM-ND game featuring the Catch. So that one, for sure. Also was there for the Heisman pose later that year, but that isn't nearly as memorable.

2. Miracle on Ice, USA 4 USSR 3. I'm old. But I will never forget it.

2. Landon Donovan scoring vs Algeria in the 2010 World Cup.

2. People going crazy on South U after the 89 basketball championship.

2. Pistons winning it all in 1989. I'm not gonna lie, if I could stand to write it out, I'd put down 1987 Eastern Conference finals when Isiah inboun-- nah, not going there.

You weren't that lunatic hanging from the stop light on South U in the rain storm, were you? I remember that we somehow ended up with a stop sign in the dorm after that.

Worst thing about that, apart from the damage to the shops was that they tore up south U and put in the pink and white checkerd sidewalk and giant pink planters. It's as though they hired the interior designer of the Iowa locker room.

Only events I have been in attendence for:

1. UTL1. Crazy ass game.

2. 2011 OSU. We won!

3. The Horror. First game...freshman year.

4. Random ass Tigers game. Dontrell pitches an inning and a 3rd. Gives up 6 runs without a hit. 0 earned runs.

5. Saw Jordan play for the Wizards. Was something like his first game in thousands without scoring in double digits

6...Cheating, but my high school won state in baseball my senior year. Had a lot of buddies on that team.

1) Jordan winning his first championship (namely him holding the trophy).  '91

2) Douglas taking over the WWF (WWE?) reffing duty that had been assigned to Tyson until Tyson lost that fight against Douglass.  It was only memorable because my Uncle informed me that Douglas would end up clocking a guy before the bout was over because it was all rigged and that was exactly what happened (I was pretty young).

3) The Bills comeback against the Oilers in 93.  I was an Oilers fan.

4) Vincy Young v. USC national championship game

5) Lloyd Carr's first game (and my first game as a Michigan fan despite having attended the school for some time at that point).

(being at the first UTL trumps every single one of them, honestly, so that's actually number one for me).

I was at Dodger Stadium when Gibby hit the home run.  I can't even put into words how electric that moment was.

I was at the Rose Bowl when we won the national championship in 1997 (game played 1/1/98).  How the refs missed that OBVIOUS pass interference call on the WSU receiver at midfield on that last drive was criminal.

After the Rodney King riots, I went to a Clipper playoff game that had to be moved to the Anaheim Convention Center.  Easily the loudest event I ever attended.  Ironically, Doc Rivers was the starting point guard.

I was at The Forum the night Magic won his first NBA Championship vs, the 76ers.

Worst event ever?  Flew my then fiancee to Ann Arbor from L.A. to see UM-ND... only to have my weekend destroyed by Rocket Ismail running two kicks back for scores.

Ray

February 18th, 2015 at 9:25 PM ^

everyone groaned when we kicked off to Ismail the 2nd time.  The second runback looked sickeningly like the first.

The highlight came though when my buddy Kev said aloud: "trivia question: How many national championship QBs have been named Elvis?"  And Elvis almost came back to win that game.

I'm a Chicago sports fan in addition to my long time love for Michigan sports. So I apologize for there being homerish:
1. Jordan's final shot with Bulls
2. Hester in Super Bowl XLI
3.2003 Cubs (Pre NLCS Game 6)
4. Michigan vs. Kansas
5. UTL, me and 2 other M fans watched with a bunch of ND fans. Heard so much crap the whole game, needless to say the end was that much sweeter.

final shot should have at least been on my honorable mention.  But it was not just that shot, it was his take on the possession before that, then he pick Malone's pocket, then he drains the shot.  Unreal.  I wish he never would have played with Washington because that final minute against Utah defined his entire career.

I was only 11 for that and Woodson\UM 97-98. That was my first real season of really understanding what was going on. Otherwise I could've gone with a million other moments for MJ. I agree that he shouldn't have come back, but at least he could still play at a high level and didn't totally emberass himself, plus it gave me a chance to watch him play when I was a teenager. I feel the same way about Barry Sanders, he was my favorite player of all time (Even as a bears fan) and he retired when I was only 12 or 13. I wish I could have paid attention his whole career.

1.  I was at Verlander's no-hitter in 2007 against the Brewers. That would be tops on my list

2.  UM/OSU 1995 .  I think Biakabutuka is still running through gigantic holes in the OSU defense.  Very fun day.  I also remember my little sister who was 12 at the time having her eyes wide open when the streaker came running directly at us from the opposite end zone.

3. UM/OSU 1989.  BO's final home game and a win clinching the Big 10 championship.

4. 1997 UM/Iowa game.  One of the best comebacks I have seen from a team, which turned out huge in capturing the National champioship that year.

5. 2006 Cardinals/Tigers regular season game.  Marcus Thames hit a 2 out 2 run homer in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings and Polanco won it in extra innings with a game winning double.  After that game I believed the Tigers would make it to the post season.

Those would be the top 5 I have attended.

5. Mario Chalmers epic 3 pointer to send national title game into OT, which KU won going away. 4. John Elways epic scramble vs green bay where he dove head first and was helicoptered, showing how badly he wanted his first super bowl 3. 1997 Michigan comeback vs Iowa 2. 1997 Ohio state game 1. 1997 national champssssss

I'll do sporting events I've been to:

1) National Title game two years ago. Came up just short, but wouldn't trade that night for anything. The thought of knowing your team is one game from winning it all, and getting to see it first hand, it was indescribable.

2) 2004 NHL Eastern Conference Finals, Game 7, Lightning take down the Flyers to advance to the Finals. I know Original Six folk don't consider anyone down south to be actual hockey fans, but I've never heard an arena so loud as what I heard when that final buzzer went off. It was deafening.

3) 2013 Michigan-OSU - we lost, but one hell of a game. Everything that game should be. Aside from the title game, I've never been so on the edge of my seat, and so emotionally deflated, from a game.

4) 2006 - Bucs vs. Eagles - Bucs were in the midst of yet another crappy year and had let the Eagles crawl back into the game and take the lead late. Matt Bryant kicks a 62 yard field goal to win the game. The Bucs only won four games that year, but if you were at Raymond James that day, you'd think they'd just won the Super Bowl.

5) 2011 UTL - this really needs no explanation. Denard ripping Notre Dame's heart out two years in a row was beautiful.

1. Woodson punt return against OSU. 2. Gibby homers off Eckersley. 3. Ordonez walk off homer to get Tigers to WS in 2006. 4. Although not a big game in the grand scheme, Carlos Guillen homer off of Weaver was amazing http://m.mlb.com/video/?content_id=17526209. 5. UTL 1, still amazed by the outcome of that game.

Honorable mention, Red Wings winning the Cup in 97'

'97 Michigan - OSU: one of my earliest sports memories

USA vs. Algeria, '10 World Cup

Chris Davis' FG return in the Iron Bowl

UTL 1

probably the US - Portugal game from this past summer. Talk about the contrast between elation after Dempsey scored and deflation when Ronaldo equalized. Luckily it didn't matter.

edit: honorable mention probably goes to the Leafs' meltdown in game seven against Boston a few years ago. Total insanity.

1. UM beats Wash St in the rose bowl for the title

2. Tigers beat the Padres in Game 5 of 1984 to win world series; kirk gibson HR

3. Tigers beat Oak to win 2006 AL pennant; Magglio HR lands about 4 rows in front of me

4. Cubs lose to Marlins in Game 7 in 2003; Kerry Wood 3 run HR to tie game nearly brings down the house.  Disappointing end though.  That entire post season was crazy in Wrigleyville.  Navarre's thundering herd TD in that epic Minny comeback was that Fall too.

5. UM beating Syracuse in the final 4 to get to the finals.

Honorable mention:

- UM winning the hockey national title in Cincy

- UM winning 1989 basketball title (I did not attend that) and the epic party in the streets afterward.  The poor China Gate restaurant.

- UM beating OSU in 1997 and Woodson's heroics.

A lifelong elderly Wings season ticket holder was asked this question, his response verbatim (to which I agree):

"When Darren McCarty beat the CRAP OUTTA CLAUDE LEMIEUX!"

I will never forget that. Followed closely is "Gretzky had it, lost it. Yzerman picks it up. Yzerman moving, blue line chance SCOOOOOOOOREEEEEEE" I still remember rolling around the carpet going fucking bonkers as an 11 year old.

UTL 1, Rose Bowl vs Texas and Kordell Stewart's stupid arm round out the 5.

1.  last football game at michigan '83 vs. ohio.  on the bench with the guys.  very fun.  and yes, we won.

2.  '84 tigers, game 5 - gibby jacking that HR to clinch it, what a classic.  and then after with the padres bus trying to pull out of tiger stadium and people rocking it.  the wedge of mounted cops came out on that cobblestone intersection, and there was a guy break dancing on top of the bus as it wobbled through michigan and trumball with the wedge of horses in front.

3.  '89 in seattle, nat'l championship game.  oh my.

4.  '93 stanley cup in LA, kings v. montreal.  went with my body guard and it was right after desert storm started. i can still feel the goose bumps i had as the forum went nuts when they played the anthem.   and besides the wings, the canadiens have the greatest hockey uni's on the planet.

5.  '03 super bowl (37) - with my brothers and my dad.  my gang investigator had security so wired for us to the point we had guys shagging us beers during the game.  and i was so glad that the raiders lost.  their fans make ohio fans look, well, almost normal.

1) miracle on ice - do you believe in miracles?
2) Ali Foreman Rumble in the Jungle
3) Rumeal Robinson sinks FT to win NC. Semi vs Illinois was just as remarkable.
4) Wings win cup in 97 ending looooong drought
5) game 7 1968 WS Detroit erupts in riots of joy following a very awful year.
