OT: Tigers Beat Mariners 19-9. 40 Combined Hits!

Submitted by MtP Michigan Man on

The 40 hits combined between Detroit and Seattle sets Comerica Park record.

24 of the 40 for Detroit.  And they do it with 2 of their best hitters, Miguel Cabrera and JD Martinez, injured.

This team has bullpen issues.  But they could be fun and interesting to watch this year.

We spent money on closers, and struck out big on one guy (Worthless Joe) while getting a bunch a shaky, but workable options. We haven't spent well on set up guys. Benoit was the only big money expense, and Soria was the only big trade. We have done NOTHING outside of closer and that is why we didn't win a title during that fun 5 year stretch.

Zimmerman gave up 5 runs today and had exactly one strikeout. The ONLY strikeout that a Tigers pitcher recorded today. Today, it was the starter. His pitching would have sunk us on a normal day. Thankfully, this was not a normal day. Holy cats!

I started a thread after the sweep in Tampa where everyone was really down. Friday's game was even worse.

Three straight wins helps, even if tonight feels like some fools gold. Nice to not fall apart while dealing with all the injuries atleast.

At least they only have to pay Sanchez $5 million to go away next season. $25 million a year from 2018-2020 is going to be tough to overcome and I feel like with his velocity he is trending more towards Sanchez than a Verlander like recovery.

obviously we are not going to score 19 runs every game. the big picture here is that seattle scored 9 runs, which is good enough to win a lot of games. bullpen continues to be a problem. which i just don't understand. how you could let this problem go on for 10 years and not address it. we have the bats, we have good starting pitchers. but the bp sucks.

Sorry, but you can't judge games like these. When you pitch in blowouts, you give up runs. You pitch to contact..

I'm not saying the Tigers pen is good or anything, but M's scored 9 runs because the tigers staff was serving up pitches on purpose.  The wilson bros are above average, and i'd go as far as saying J Wilson should be our closer.. He's nasty this year. I feel like they are 1 more bullpen pitcher away from really contending for the division.

Was at the game and I don't think I have ever been more unsatisfied at a blow out win in my life. Zimmerman has just been awful since his neck problems last year. There is absolutely no hope for the bullpen. If the Starters can't go at least 6, they're in trouble. Things are okay now, record wise but it's going to be a long summer in the D.

man, it is April, wand I don't think it is time for doom and gloom just yet.  Your points have some validity, but consider this:

1) Outside of Zimmerman, we have Verlander and Fulmer, two great starters, and Norris and Boyd, young guys that definitely have some game.  And I still have hope for Zimmerman to come back around.

2) We are in 1st place despite a dismal bullpen, Miguel ineffective for 1st 10 games and now hurt, V-Mart not hitting well, and JD Martinez hurt.  All three of those bats will get going.

3) Your point about the starters needing to go at least 6 - that goes for about any team.

4) Bullpen does suck - but Justin Wilson and Alex Wilson have been doing their jobs, w Justin Wilson really strong.  Just need a couple of others to also step up.  K-Rod just might be getting old, you need to have a 90-91 MPH fastball to make your change up work.  Sanchez/Greene/Ryan/Rondon - I have no response to this, they have been pathetic.  We need 1-2 of these guys, or Jimenez, to get in the same place as the Wilsons.

5) The Central is winnable - Twins and White Sox are pathetic, KC back to being KC, and Cleveland is good but has their holes.

6) Dude, it is April, and we are in 1st place.  Lighten up and let the glass be half full - at least until the "June Swoon"...

I'm surprised that Zimmerman is struggling so much.  We liked him in DC.  On other news, the Nats beat the Rockies 15-12, with 29 hits combined.  Trea Turner had seven RBI's while Daniel Murphy had five.  Trea Turner also hit for the cycle - incredible work last night.

They both need to be in Toledo. Problem is, there isn't much else down there that would help us. They're trying to make Drew VerHagen and Buck Farmer (BUCK FUTTER!!!) starters, and I have no idea why. Both are long relievers at best.

That's the other problem. If/when you do send down Ryan and Greene, and cash out Sanchez, and you send for Farmer, Arcenio Leon, and maybe someone else, that's it. If those guys don't get it done, you're not going to just bleed. You're going to hemorrhage because there isn't a Plan C. You're pushing all your chips in, bullpen-wise, and it's not even the 5th of May.

Oh, and Sanchez just pitched to Nelson Cruz. I'll give you one good guess as to just how that turned out.

Alex and Justin Wilson have been the only reliable relievers so far.  Hoping that Blaine Hardy can fill the LOOGY role that Ryan has flopped at.  K-Rod is Todd Jones revisited.  If Rondon had started off the year the way that he finished last season, Greene's role could have been signifcantly reduced, and Jimenez could have gotten the additional seasoning in Toledo that he clearly needs.

VerHagen and Farmer have live arms, and if one of the current starters goes on the DL, I'd rather see one of them start instead of Sanchez.  Howver, both have had trouble the second time through the batting order, and I agree that ther's more upside for them in relief.
