OT: Tigers' Galarraga Must See

Submitted by Z on

I know there's already an OT thread for tonight's game.  For anybody who's not watching, though, tune in for the ninth inning of the Tigers' game.

I can't tell you why, but you won't be sorry.

EDIT: For those who missed it, Galarraga retired 26 straight batters.  He was covering first on a ground out for the last out in the ninth and the umpire (Jim Joyce) called him....SAFE???  This wasn't a close call - he was definitely out and Galarraga got jobbed out of a perfect game.  Feel for the guy.

Perhaps the worst call I have ever seen in a baseball game of such significance.  When someone is going for a perfect game, you give him the benefit of the doubt on a close call, not miss it by a foot.

Seriously.  Close play like that?  You call him out, the play is never, ever replayed and someone gets a chance to do something special, and nobody knows your name.  Call him safe and it'll get incessantly analyzed to see if you were right and God help you if you were wrong.  Which the whole world could see you were.

I totally believe it was a horrible call and it wasn't close.  I seriously didn't see this as a chance for the ump to make it about him.  I think he flat out missed it.  I'm glad he got an earful from the players.  Best part may have been the classy reaction by Armando.

Nice job Galarraga.

Jim Joyce had a terrible call there, but let's be real, he wasn't trying to make himself bigger than the game.  After he sees it he will think to himself "Damn, I fucked that one up."  Let's be real, we all know it was a terrible call, but Joyce didn't do it on purpose, unless he, for some reason, bet fat cash on Galarraga not throwing a perfect game.

Joyce should be strung up by his balls.  How in fuck's name do you manage to screw that up?  Maybe Donald will do something honorable and somehow retroactively forfeit his at-bat?  That was absolute BS.

Of course now we get to miss out another nuggest of sports history of the 21st perfect game ever. And no less, three, ahem, two of them, would have been in the 2010 season, all before the All Star Game. Ridiculous.

PS - And Austin Jackson's catch wasn't anything to laugh at either.

can the MLB reverse the call and give Galaraga the perfect game?

I know they overturned an error given to Polanco a couple years back so that he kept his error-free game streak going. Any baseball people out there know precedent for this type of situation?

that was the most Canadian, pitiful call in sports that wasn't against the Wings. Is this a Detroit Rock City thing ... If I made that mistake, I would be fired.  Very pitiful in a perfect game situation.

that was a pathetic call

his wiki page did just have this up haha

James A. Joyce III (October 3, 1955 - June 2, 2010

but Selig has to take that ball and put it in Cooperstown. Give Gallaraga and asterisk in the record books if you have to. That was a Perfect Game.  Point Blank.

Via ESPN:

"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

So...  Do the right thing, tell Selig exactly that, and have Selig do the right thing for baseball.

You'd think Joyce would give the benefit of the doubt to the defense there.  I mean come on, who wants to ruin a perfect game?  If you call the guy out and he's safe, no one would really protest.  Perfect games are special even when you're on the losing end.

One can only hope, but I'm not counting on it with Bud Selig.  Hopefully he does the right thing.  If not, the official scorekeeper is the only way it can change.  The only thing they can do to make it somewhat justifiable for Gallaraga is to give either Gallaraga or Cabby an error and Gallaraga a no hitter.  If in fact Joyce's opinion was that Gallaraga bobbled the ball, it should have been an error anyways.

For a sport that is so obsessed with statistics and record keeping, it is really weird to have a system in place that compells everyone to enter what is unanimously agreed to be the wrong result into the books.
