OT: The Tigers' broadcast tonight
If you're watching the Tigers play the Nationals tonight (and I suggest you do as it will be Sanchez vs. Strasburg) do not be surprised when you realize that Rod and Mario have the day off. The strange thing about this, however, is that according to 97.1 The Ticket (sorry that I have no physical source) there will be no commentary tonight. You will be able to hear the crowd and all that noise, but no commentary unless there is a last minute change (maybe we can hear Kaline again??)
Good luck to Sanchez and the TIgers tonight! And welcome Jose Veras
they did this with an NFL game way back in the 80's and it didn't go over well. Jets/Dolphins I think.
Probably works better for baseball
Yeah I think you're right. And it is interesting, but I definitely see this being horrible. Especially considering it is a better idea with football since you can always hear the QB yelling; with baseball, I'm just gonna fall asleep. Probably gonna just pause the game for a few seconds so my TV is on line with Dickerson and Price and listen to the radio while I watch
Just remember folks, you can disable the announcers on any sports broadcast assuming:
- the game is broadcast in Dolby (most are)
- you have a 5+ speaker channel set-up
by simply unplugging the center channel.
But FSD doesn't have a 5.1 output on Comcast. You are only able to get sound from the announcers via the left and right front speakers. It drives me nuts and is one reason I hardly watch Tiger's games.
Ugh. That's terrible. At least all of the broadcast nets send their signals over the air in Dolby Digital.

They announced over the weekend they wouldn't even be there. Maybe they'll be broadcasting from Jim Leyland's basement.
Thanks for putting that up there. I think this is actually a good idea now. We can try out how it is without them, and then listen to them if we hate it without Mario and Rod.
Thank goodness. Mario and Rod are pretty much the only sports commentary on TV that I truly enjoy. I'm a big fan of the natural sounds of the game when I'm at the ballpark, but when I'm watching the Tigers on TV, I prefer the natural sounds of Mario Impemba and Rod Allen. I see ya, FSN.
As an alternative to this idea, I wouldn't mind if they imposed the radio announcers (Dickerson and Price) over the television broadcast. In fact, I wouldn't mind if they just switched it up to the opposing teams' announcers just for a change of pace once or twice a season. I like Rod and Mario well enough, but over the course of a long season you can get sick of even the best announcers.
I love it.
I wish they had a "sports natural" channel (or something) that did only this.
This isn't to say I don't like Rod and Mario because I actually do love those guys. I hate 99% of announcers though.
It sucks living in Kentucky and never getting to hear Rod and Mario crack wise about the Bless You Boys. I miss that.
About 15 years ago, my Grandparents were still using a two box set-up with a huge Satelitte dish in the back yard as a way to watch tv. You were able to find tv feeds that had no broadcasters but just the natural sounds from the game.
I've read the idea here (I think it actually was Brian) so I give all credit elsewhere, but I honestly believe it is a great idea. I would enjoy it very much. Just the announcer on the PA echoing back against the new suites. Man, I get chills just thinking about it.
nah...things just take longer to get to canadia
listen to Bob Carpenter and FP Santangelo (a MI native) do the Nats broadcast. They are good without being too homerish. I think it will be channel 640 (or 641 if the O's game got the prime channel).
I watch tennis this way a lot. During the majors, the Tennis Channel's website (and maybe ESPN3) will sometimes stream feeds of individual courts without commentary during the early rounds. I prefer to have the announcers no matter how awful they are, especially for a baseball game.
Watching Rod and Mario, does anyone else ever get the impression they really don't like each other?
...I love the idea of annoucer-less broadcasts (too many of those guys seem full of themselves) but baseball does have enough lulls that a little bit of conversation isn't so unbearable. In fact, back in the day, I rather liked listening to the George Kell and Al Kaline combination.
By comparison, the hyper idiots doing other sports like football, basketball and hockey tend to feel like nails on a chalkboard to me. That's one more reason that I like watching games at a bar. The ambient noise of the bar often overwhelms the broadcast and you can feel a sense of energy from the other bar patrons similar to the game crowd.
Nice! I was at Comerica for my bachelor party a few years ago. And by at Comerica, I mean while walking back to MotorCity casino from a gentleman's club in Greektown at 2am (I have no idea why we thought walking through downtown Detroit in the dead of night was a good idea), one of my very lanky friends somehow slipped through the gates of Comerica Park and ran around for a few minutes while we all watched in shock.
Anyways, have fun and be safe (but not too safe).
I watched some announcerless feeds during the Olympics last summer and I thought it was pretty cool.
Hockey with natual sounds is really cool. They should do that more often. Not that I don't enjoy Ken and Mick but the sounds of the game really make it something. Coaches yelling, the communication between players, hitting posts, big body checks, etc.
