OT: Talking Legends / Events Wednesday - Lost Colony of Roanoke

Submitted by Eli on July 24th, 2019 at 8:38 AM

Happy Hump day everyone. I will keep these going until the week leading up to the first game. Today let’s talk about the Lost Colony of Roanoke...

For those that don’t know, it was the first attempt at a permanent settlement in North America by the English. Roanoke Island is located in North Carolina (not Virginia). In 1587 a detachment returned to England to seek aid for the colony as they were in a desperate situation and needed more supplies. The leader of this group, who was the grandfather of the first English child born in North America (Virginia Dare) was the leader of the group that left. He was unable to return until 1590. When him and his crew arrived, everyone was gone. This included 90 men, 17 women and 11 children.

The only clue was the word CROATOAN was carved into a fence post. Also a nearby tree had CRO carved in it. Crotoan Island was a nearby island and they thought the people had moved there. They were not immediately able to search that island due to a storm. They concluded the lost people had not left in a hurry as all of their fortifications were dismantled. The people left behind were told to carve a Maltese Cross On a tree if they were forced to leave.

So, what the heck happened to these people? Some say they integrated with local Indians or were killed and everything including their bodies were taken away (most likely in my opinion). Some say the Spanish destroyed the colony (I don’t believe the Spanish knew where this was and how to get there). Some say they became rogue travelers and just died off. Others say they built a fort somewhere else and died off before they could be found. Lastly, some say Bigfoot got em... jk

Have a great rest of the week guys and tell everyone what you think happened to the Colony at Roanoke.

Pure guess out of thin air: Knew they weren't going to make it after a certain point, got access to a ship (maybe tried to build one), all got in and were never seen again.

That actually would be a logical path of survival to take in the time period. Attempting to reach known salvation by sea, versus venturing  further into the North Carolina wilderness (like entering an unknown wild jungle) would seem a logical choice.

However, the message on the post would contradict that theory.

They were turned into evil ghosts by the daughter of the settlements founder, who went back to England for help.  She had given up her soul to a paranormal woman.  They've killed everyone that tried to live there since...

I mean, this was covered on TV a few years ago...

First off--Thank You ELI!--for the kaleidoscopic entertainment on Wednesdays this summer!

Kindly consider continuing this program into football season as this feature is likely to offer more drama and fun than some of the early games.

As far as the missing colony--I think it went something like this one warm November day:

in 1589:

Maitre D:

"Algonquian Party, Paging the Algonquian Party--your table is ready!"

And, the entire English party was there too, only spread out as part of many home-made native dishes as menu items for the Original Thanksgiving Celebration (Indian style).....

The Foot and Ball Classic Festivities then kicked off as a Tribal Rivalry and Tribute "Desert" until the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers were discovered many years later.....

3 years isn't a long enough time for them to forget everything though. I can't imagine they'd have gotten very far. After 3 years, almost all would still be alive. I'm sure word of white people returning would have spread through communities. I can't imagine they integrated and then any later contact became impossible.

Plan:

1) dismantle fortifications and shelters

2) build boat

3) take everyone upriver

4) build luxury condos

5) profit!  (Or, maybe not)

My thought on this was that the indians slaughtered them all.  The only problem is that there would be some sign of struggle.  Blood somewhere stained.  Arrows/weopons left behind somewhere.  Unless they were all taken somewhere else either forcefully or peacefully, then slaughtered.

Well there is a 3 year window for this all to happen. I could certainly see some combination of the Indians as well as natural weather conditions getting rid of the physical evidence of a battle. They could have been attacked shortly after some of the colonists sailed back to England. Would have been the perfect time for local Indians to attack seeing as the Brit's numbers were reduced.

If you ever get to the Outer Banks take the time to go see the play that they do on Roanoke Island about the lost colony.  We took the kids when they were young and when they were teenagers.  We all enjoyed it both times.

Three years is a long time to wait. Hell, even one year is a long time. Took Columbus about 5-6 weeks to get across the Atlantic. Can’t imagine it took much longer for the Roanoke colonists to get there, too.

Completely unfounded opinion, but my guess is eventually the remaining colonists thought they wouldn’t survive long enough for help to arrive, or thought they’d just been abandoned altogether. They probably packed everything up, tried building a ship to get them to where they thought they were going (Croatoan), and then something either happened en route (storm sank the ship and no one survived), or they got to where they were going and then integrated with indigenous tribes.

Just my thought, but if they were indeed raided by Natives, it seems like there would’ve been more signs of a struggle. It’s entirely possible that they left the island, integrated with Natives, and then came back later with those Natives to to grab what remaining supplies they could and use them collectively.

There is literally zero evidence disproving that it was aliens.

But they probably ran out of food and resources and tried to move somewhere else, and subsequently perished.

I guess I believe that they moved and peacefully settled in with a native tribe. But then that native tribe was attacked by another group of natives and they were all slaughtered.

During the off season of CFB I do enjoy several shows that are interesting and informative.

There were 2 shows that addressed the Lost Colony, Josh Gates; Expedition Unknown https://go.discovery.com/tv-shows/expedition-unknown/full-episodes/the-lost-colony-of-roanokehttps.

Scot Wolter and his America Unearthed series is another deep dive into our country's history that from a forensic geologist perspective provides evidence of earlier habitation with Runestones engraved on caves, stones with Viking writings. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=America+Unearthed+Mystery+of+Roanoke&&view=detail&mid=491438A1DEF29EB60E58491438A1DEF29EB60E58&&FORM=VRDGAR.

These are but a few family shows that encourages the MGoYoungsters to learn about history. Currently running are many shows on History, Sci Channel, Travel, Discovery that tries to explain the unknown phenomenon of UFO and space. Thank you for this post and look forward to future ones as well.

My best guess, based on the limited good evidence: Natives attacked, killed off some of the settlers and captured others. These captured settlers became quasi-slaves that were eventually integrated into the tribes. There is just enough anecdotal evidence of Europeans being seen among the various Virginian tribes that this makes the most sense to me.

Sam and Dean Winchester figured this one out years ago. Croatoan was a demonic blood virus that caused humans to turn into violent rabid creatures. The Roanoke colony simply destroyed itself. Mmhmm.

well, the fort, when found in 1590, was basically dismantled leading some to speculate they dismantled the fort to build boats and go elsewhere.

I think what is most likely is the native americans attacked and they carved "croatoan" so when the english arrived, they'd know where to look (croaton tribe) and who was responsible.  they likely forgot about, or didn't have time, to carve the maltese cross.  The croaton tribe dismantled the fort to use the wood and as a show of force to the english or other tribes (we took down the enemy base!)

Many were killed, (and the original site is now likely a couple hundred feet offshore due to erosion so no evidence will ever be found) some probably escaped and died, some escaped and integrated with other tribes nearby, some others were held as slaves by the croatan and eventually integrated with them.

The answer is clear. All trace of the Roanoke Colonists disappeared because they were absorbed into the SEC and hence lost any individual identity as a separate group. Linguists, (including Dr. Pepper) believe the origin of what would become the S-E-C chant has been traced to about this time in that is now the Southeastern U.S.

They were not immediately able to search that island due to a storm.

Am I missing something?  Even the worst of storms would only last a day or 2.   They never made it to the island?

Guys, they did a whole TV series on this -- someone turned a wheel and the colonists traveled to a different time, so of course they weren't there when the leader returned.  Oddly, the colonists later survived a plane crash, and then ended up in a church together -- it's all a little confusing, to be honest.

The problem with them integrating with a tribe, is that 3 years isn't enough time for them to go fully native. They would still be pretty much look and speak like English people.

Native Americans also have a lot of passed down oral traditions and trace their lineage. I can't believe if they essentially adopted 100 people that no one would have mentioned it when more Europeans started populating the colonies.
