OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - Biggest & Bikes

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Tuesday Again!

I'm hosting about 10 people from one of the Big 3 at my plant today, so I've got to get this post up and out of the way. Two potential topics today:

First, what is the LARGEST vehicle you've ever driven? Could be a uhaul, could be a 36' old Cadillac.

Second - where are the MGoMotorcycle Riders? I know nothing about motorcycles, so I'll get my awful sportswriter hat on and ask "Talk about Motorcyles."

You could drive over a Volkswagon in a town car and it'd feel like a small speed bump.  I got T-boned by a Chevy Caprice Classic that ran a red light.

My Town Car barely moved and his front end was folded up.  Town Car was dented.  His ride was totaled.  I drove away.  He got a lift home in from the tow truck.

Biggest car I've ever driven was a 1974 Lincoln Continental. That thing was a boat.

Biggest truck is probably an F350, maybe an Econoline.

Biggest vehicle at all is a 20' U-Haul with a car trailer on the back. That was  bit scary at times, particularly driving through the Appalachians from Atlanta to Chicago.

Biggest would be a U-Haul (20' maybe?), but that's not very exciting so I'll go with something else. My first car was a 1988 Cadillac DeVille that was almost as old as I was. Thing was a tank...

It's one of the few things that helps keep me sane.  I ride to work every chance I get and I am able to smile the whole way there and back.  My bike is a bit older.  '98 Superhawk, Honda's answer to the Ducati.  I consider all those who ride litre twin sportbikes my brother.  It's completely different than riding an inline 4.

I'm also blessed to have some of the best mountian roads on the east coast to ride.  Obviously The Dragon and a few others are better but they aren't within 1/2 hour of my home.  There are riders that come from as far away as Canada to ride here on the weekends.

Every once in a while I talk about getting my "old man bike" since my knees and back get pretty sore if we put in a 200mi+ day but I don't think I'd be happy riding a sofa.

I've always loved the sound of the Superhawks and TL1000s. I have a sporty for its day litre boxer (see above), does that count? I'm really close to the Triple Nickel here in Ohio. I've ridden the Dragon and I'd personally rather ride our back roads around here and not have to fight the crowds! Enjoy your ride!

Forget rentals trucks, etc. I owned a 67 Bonneville. It was gold and had a 400-4 barrel.

It was 10 years old when I got it, but it great condition.  It was giant with a trunk that could have held Jimmy Hoffa and another 4-5 teamsters with ease.  And don't forget the giant front bench seat to please da ladies.

Mgrowold above had a 1968 Catilina which looks to be about the same car, but mine wasn't nearly as nice.

The largest is probably a draw. I drove a 22 ft. Penske from St. Pete, FL to MI. The truck itself wasn't too bad, but the time it took to go through the mountains seemed like an eternity, especially in the middle of the night. Also used to drive a 18 ft. box truck with a 12 ft. trailer, back when I worked for a local brewery in the summers.

Current bike is a HD 1200 Sportster. Don't ride it as often as I would like, but I find it decently comfortable. Would love to upgrade in the next couple years.

Is a 25ft gooseneck trailer pulled behind a Crew Cab dually, probably 10k miles total half empty, half loaded up to 15k trailer weight.  It uses (significant amounts of) gasoline and has to be fueled at normal gas stations.  What I realize over and over is that in general, people driving cars have no respect for the length and mass of what you are driving there.  I've nearly clipped people several times backing up super slowly, with nobody around to start, as I'm focusing on some other clearance point, suddenly there's a car zooming by the end of the trailer with what looks like inches to spare in the mirrors.  At the gas pumps, I have to be able to reach the filler nozzle on the truck, so sometimes that means waiting for a car to pull out to reach the pump ahead, so many times people zoom right in front of me to the pump ahead, just to make me wait for another fillup.

Its hard to gripe at the general public but if I were king for a day, I'd make all students drive something big and long at the end of their driver's training, even one of those 26' medium duty box trucks would be fine, it would at least firmly plant the bug in everyone's mind that truck drivers need help from the rest of us.

Because I've driven a few moving trucks, but definitely large...a 1926 American LaFrance fire engine with mechanical brakes that were less than reliable and an old Dodge V-8 under the bonnet with no exhaust system. Fun.

I ride a Triumph Thunderbird. Taking her over the Cascades this weekend. I'd give up any other hobbies I have as long as I get to keep riding.

I worked for a moving company in college and they had a F350 crew cab. That is a long big vehicle. You can fit 6 people in the cab and have a full size bed. It was a great vehicle to drive down the highway, but one trip, we took the truck to mt pleasant and I had to park it at some club, and that was interesting.

Big uhauls can be fun to drive, but I'd agree that the city is not fun. Know the truck height and pay attention to the bridge heights.

Helped get my dad's 26-foot Albemarle from Ocean City, MD back to Michigan.  It looks like this on a trailer:

You quickly learn that 100 miles of fuel remaining = 50 miles of fuel remaining, that your new 0-60 time is about ten minutes, and to choose restaurants and gas stations based on trailer-friendliness.  In other words, hello truck stops.  Never been so happy to see Breezewood, PA.

on occasion. Kenworth W900 with a sleeper and a 53' trailer. I never really liked it. Pretty fun if you were the only one on the road, not fun when you're 80k+lbs and all the other idiots cut you off like you can stop on a dime.
