OT (sort of): Interesting Takes from Harbaugh Introductory Press Conference
Didn’t see this posted anywhere. And I know, I know. He’s gone and moved on. However, I thought there were some interesting takes from his press conference with the Chargers, specifically his take on NIL, new hire Ben Herbert, and “conversations” with Sherrone after he left:
On where the Michigan program is at after his departure and with Sherrone Moore as the new head coach:
“Sherrone is the right man for the job. Nobody else would be … I mean, that’s the guy, and they got it right. I see they’re a top-five team right now, top-rated team. I think of it as one — Chargers and Michigan Wolverines like one team, and in a great place. In a great place.
“Much like when players leave the university to go onto the pros, there’s a passing of the baton that takes place. When you see [Michigan quarterback] J.J. [McCarthy] leave [for the NFL Draft], but then I see [juniors] Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji, that next day they’re on that field, they’re throwing with receivers. There’s an excitement there. Been enthralled in that as a player, when the quarterback ahead of me left or graduated. And it’s the same for coaches.
“Been talking to Sherrone Moore. I mean, the guy is on fire right now. He’s working hard.”
On if Jesse Minter and Ben Herbert are joining the Chargers:
Coaches like [Michigan defensive coordinator] Jesse Minter — he’s a tremendous coach. We’re going through a process right now. Ben Herbert, I can confirm that he’s going to be in charge, but the passing of the baton was there to Justin Tress — J. Tress. Hugged it out and right there in the middle of the weight room. In great hands. I’m always gonna be a loyal Wolverine.”
On if Jesse Minter and Jay Harbaugh will join the Chargers staff:
“Going through the process right now. Timeline … just gotta get it right. There are so many good coaches out there, and nobody I respect more than Jesse. Shining star as a coach. You know I’ve been with him [for two years at Michigan].
I want to talk to as many people as I can before we make the final hires. But he would be tremendous.
Jay is a great coach, a shining star, as well. We’ll let you know. We haven’t made the final decisions on the staff yet.”
Harbaugh on if NIL was overwhelming as a coach:
“I don’t look at the obstacles. Every job has its downside or challenge or adversity, but no, I have no complaint. People that complain, that’s a common plain — that word comes from ‘common-plain.’ They want to get you to agree with them. I’ve got no complaints. I’ve got no complaints. I love football, love coaching, and faith, family, football. This opportunity I just have tremendous gratitude for.”
On if Michigan could’ve done anything to keep him:
“Michigan was great. Michigan — have a great love for Michigan and great love for the NFL. And this opportunity and challenge is what I wanted.”
It was a quick line, but Jim states he has been in contact with Sherrone. Maybe a few select coaches within Schembechler Hall were told which assistants he would pluck earlier than reported. Could he potentially be giving Sherrone guidance on our next OC/DC? I’d like to believe this to be the case, especially if we don’t automatically promote from within. I think we all *crosses fingers* would hope in the future for a pipeline of up and coming assistants from the Chargers to replicate what was done with Ravens staff. IMO he alluded to this above saying he thinks of Michigan and the Chargers as “one team.”
Also, very interesting that he won’t commit to saying Minter and Jay are heading to Chargers but will comment that Herbert is. Obviously as reported they’re likely gone, it just seems that LA hasn’t officially announced the hires as of yet.
We’ll miss you coach. Onward.

"People that complain, that’s a common plain — that word comes from ‘common-plain.’
Man, I'm going to miss this kind of absolute nonsense.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:12 AM ^
The best.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:30 AM ^
Why would you miss it? He’s not going anywhere, we’re all part of team Michigan-Chargers, didn’t you hear?
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:39 AM ^
Any team with Joey Bosa on it is definitely not "team Michigan."
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:49 AM ^
My thoughts exactly. I appreciate the sentiment, but there might be a few people on both sides who take exception to that idea.
February 2nd, 2024 at 5:45 AM ^
If Bosa is one of those people, and I don't know that he is, then he can go find a new team to play for. I’m sure he’d have suitors, but if he doesn’t like Harbaugh being at the helm for any reason whatsoever, he’s free to clear out his locker and GTFO. I’m sure Harbaugh is more than happy to jettison anyone off the team who he doesn’t think is going to buy into what he wants to do. From the backup long snapper all the way up to Herbert and Bosa.
I don't know if Bosa is one of those guys who wouldn't buy in, but if he's not, then he's a short-sighted fool. At this point, your desire to win a Super Bowl should trump any feelings of bitterness you might have about having to play for a guy who coached for your college rival. The Chargers have been losing a lot of football games in Bosa's time there, and Harbaugh should be a near immediate remedy for that.
If you can't get past that, then you shouldn't be there, and you should do everyone a solid, clear out your locker and go.

I remember being excited about Joey Bosa visiting for our Spring Game in [2012]. I can't find the MGoBlog post (I looked) but I have a distinct memory of him being a troll/jerk while at the game and committing to OSU a week or so after. He did very well for OSU though.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
Both Bosas are, shall we say, strange.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:24 AM ^
That may have been Billy Price you're thinking of, who openly rooted for OSU on our visit during The Game. His parents chastised him.
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:51 AM ^
I highly doubt players take any real Michigan/OSU animosity with them into the NFL. That’s for fans. I’m sure there’s some good natured trash talk back and forth about the rivalry, but refusing to play with of for each other? No way. CJ Stroud and Nico Collins seem to be doing ok.
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:54 AM ^
Agree. It’s professional football. They don’t care what school you went to when they’re on the clock.
Perhaps Bosa will be a cap casualty, but school will have nothing to do with it.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:48 AM ^
That's what I'm thinking as well. If Bosa isn't on the team next year, its more likely that it just comes from a "Sorry, we decided we can't afford you anymore" standpoint, there's a firm handshake, and both sides part amicably.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:55 AM ^
It is odd. However, if you look at the way it has worked with coaches going back and forth between the Ravens and Michigan it is easier to see what he might be thinking about. Seems like the Ravens relationship has helped both sides as well as the individual coaches.
February 2nd, 2024 at 5:30 AM ^
During Q&A, Jim mentioned several Chargers' players. He did not mention Bosa. Whether or not that was done on purpose is something we'll soon find out as they sort through their Cap issues.
February 2nd, 2024 at 11:49 AM ^
Get Bosa healthy and then trade him for a couple picks.
February 2nd, 2024 at 6:18 AM ^
He is our modern day Yogi Berra.
February 2nd, 2024 at 6:49 AM ^
It's actually not nonsense, he's right. I got curious and looked it up
"from Latin com- (“together”) + plangere (“to strike, beat, as the breast in extreme grief, bewail”)"
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:16 AM ^
And I'd bet that Harbaugh knew the word's etymology, and wasn't just riffing.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:13 AM ^
Not to be pedantic, but the "com-" in "complaint" is an intensive prefix and not the "com-" derived from "cum" in classical latin meaning "together" or "with." Either way, it does not mean "common." Just one of those great Harbaughisms that's vaguely connected to reality.
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:52 AM ^
You’re being pedantic.
February 2nd, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
You're being completely pedantic and I love it.
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:57 AM ^
Lots of common plainers around here the last week, Coach would be so disappointed in you guys....
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:22 AM ^
I love Harbaugh’s optimism, but it seems a bit of a stretch to say we are a “Top 5” team next year with Denegal or Oriji as our QB. But I love JH’s optimism of the team he is leaving
Simply objectively looking at the offensive talent that is left and seeing many holes in the cupboard. Offense is gonna be rough without some major additions, primarily at QB. Also, no clue what coordinators are locked up or who Moore can get.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
He's only been gone 2 weeks, knows college football and knows Michigan's roster. If he see's Top 5, I'm not gonna argue with him.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
I could see us doing quite well with Orji as our QB. I think the era or the QB run stalled out because QB run teams lacked in their diversity of run plays and blocking schemes. That’s not an issue with us.
February 2nd, 2024 at 11:53 AM ^
Idk man, if a team can run the ball and play defense at an elite level they'll be real tough to beat.
Just not sure if there is such a team...oh wait...
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:29 AM ^
Can we get a tshirt that says
"COMMON PLAINERS" but each O is the OSU block O
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:41 AM ^
You didn’t mention the Rockford Files references. There were multiple. Going to miss those weird 70’s pop culture references. The funniest is when he told the media in 2016, in reference to reports he had NFL interest, that they were “jive turkeys,” citing Rockford Files. Peak Harbaugh.
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:46 AM ^
Virtually everything he says is interesting in some way. He'll be the biggest star in LA, the man literally oozes content. Nothing original about the line but this is just pure Jim...
When owner Dean Spanos was talking to Harbaugh before his flight from Michigan for the presser, Spanos warned him, “You’re bringing a storm with you. It’s supposed to rain all Thursday.”
According to Spanos, Harbaugh replied, “Dean, we are the storm.”
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:36 AM ^
Peak Harbaugh: says he's going to drive his RV out to LA and live in it. "I'm going to Jim Rockford it for a couple of months..."
February 2nd, 2024 at 5:16 AM ^
Appreciate all that he accomplished here at Michigan, but he’s a weirdo, and he’s their weirdo now.
February 2nd, 2024 at 6:10 AM ^
I’m not sure weirdo fits. I’d love to see his IQ. I’d guess he’s a 125 or higher. He sees the world differently than many.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:02 PM ^
Tbf, weirdness and intelligence are two completely different axes in the personality space.

Sam Webb: His idiosyncrasies aren't so idio in Ann Arbor.

"Those who stay have syncrasies."
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:12 AM ^
Aw, c'mon. He'll always be our weirdo.
Thanks to the OP for posting this. Great stuff!
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:17 AM ^
I think 99.9% of crazy successful people in any field are odd in some way. Almost comes With the territory.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:47 AM ^
When my son was a freshman in college, I was at one of his games, and when he came in off the mound, I heard a couple of his older teammates yell, "Nice job, Weird Guy!" Did I hear that right? Their nickname for my kid is "Weird Guy"? Turns out, it was. And he is kind of a weird guy, in the Harbaugh mold.
February 2nd, 2024 at 6:07 AM ^
I don’t believe any more loyal to Michigan than he was before he coached here. He’s loyal to the work he’s doing. He might give Sherrone guidance or advice but probably about the same as he’d give Jedd. If Sherrone finds a great up and coming guy to coordinate then he would take him if it helped Jim win.
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:14 AM ^
Enjoy the championship that Michigan won less than a month ago. No other coach was putting Michigans program in the spot Jim left it in. He doesn’t need to earn the freedom to do what he wants to do, but if he had to earn it, he certainly did.
February 2nd, 2024 at 10:37 AM ^
While everything you said is true, it doesn't mean that anyone has to be loyal to, or happy with Harbaugh going forward, now that he's left. I'm ecstatic he brought the natty home. I'm less than thrilled that the program stability and long term gains that typically seem to come with a national championship were basically immediately put into question.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
I don't see it as a matter of 'loyalty' but rather focus. Otherwise, I agree with what you say. Harbaugh's mind is always laser-focused on what he is doing at the moment. Right now, it's coaching the chargers.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:23 PM ^
Yeah, when he says Michigan and the Chargers are one team, I think what he’s more saying is that he wants to bring his “work family” to LA with him rather than some experiment in being head coach emeritus from the coast
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:00 AM ^
I find the delay on the Minter and Jay stuff very strange. I don't get it.
As the OP below asking about Chargers blogs said, seeing him in full on Chargers mode made it hit home and made me feel sad.
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:09 AM ^
For an NFL coach, having an intact staff on February 2 matters a lot less than it does for a college coach. NFL free agency is over a month away.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:07 AM ^
Contract negotiations don't always work on your timeline. Maybe one of the involved lawyers was golfing?
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:56 AM ^
There is no way Shea got his law degree already
February 2nd, 2024 at 9:30 AM ^
My timeline? I’m not on any timeline.
It just seems strange because as best I understand it they have officially left Michigan yet don’t actually have the other job in hand even though everyone believes they do.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:41 AM ^
Maybe they're being given a chance to meet with all the kids they've been recruiting so they can have a smooth transition and keep them happy. Coach Harbaugh left no unfinished business on the field, winning a national championship before riding off for another try at a Super Bowl. I'm sure he wouldn't leave Michigan and Moore with unfinished business off the field.
February 2nd, 2024 at 7:13 AM ^
I hate the weird delay around Minter. It leaves the possibility of a Ben-Johnson-Lions sort of reversal where we suddenly hear Minter saying "nope...decided to stay"
I can't help hoping and I hate that.
