OT: Shareef O'Neal (Shaq's son) may have been the last person Kobe communicated with before he died

Submitted by FrankMurphy on January 26th, 2020 at 10:10 PM

Shareef O'Neal shared a screenshot of a message Kobe sent to him about an hour and a half before the crash. By the time Shareef replied, unbeknownst to him, Kobe was gone.

Life is precious and fragile. RIP.

Who cares who was last, first, best or worst to communicate with Kobe... guy died an untimely and unfortunate death, as did the rest of the passengers/pilot, leaving behind many who now have to grieve the loss.

When did this board become literally the meanest place on earth?

Seriously...

What is wrong with some of you?  Why are you so angry?  Why are you all so quick to be instantly rude to other human beings?

For pete’s sake.  Go get laid, lift weights, punch your boss...

UofM fans and boards were not like this 15yrs ago.

Idk where you all came from..  but please go back.

Larry man trust me...I'm trying to get laid... :)

But in general yeah...message boards bring out the worst in people...and it does seem to be getting worse. In the case of this board..that might be to do to some degree with the state of the football program which has brought about epic despair within a growing portion of the fanbase.

We endured the Rodriguez years here just fine. It isn't the football team, it's the endless parade of fucking idiots that have basically taken over this once quality message board. Now it's just a contest to see who can be the loudest, most vitriolic poster. Race to the bottom.

This board is toast. Not sure why I even come back anymore, honestly. Habit, I guess.

This is a good post, Larry.  The request yesterday for the ban hammer for select posters won’t cut it.  Until like 50% of the people on this blog realize they are just being assholes for no reason it is going to remain like this.  I’ve noticed a couple of good level headed posters who have stopped posting also.  People are literally being driven away from the site because of the tone in the comments.  It is getting pretty crazy.

I think this is just the age we live in. It isn't reserved for political discussion anymore. People see an avatar instead of a human being on the other side. Yesterday in a political "discussion" on Facebook I had someone tell me I was a "bald fat fuck" (which is fair) who he "wished had died in the helicopter crash."

People are told that whoever opposes them in anything is a Nazi or a Communist, a bigot, a snowflake, whatever you want to call it. Everything is us vs them. Nobody can discuss anything anymore.

If we were at a bar together and someone brought this up (the OP) it would simply be another point of discussion. ?‍♂️

Here's the thing. That kind of stuff doesn't bother me in the least, mostly because I have a life with a good support network outside of social media, and so I don't really have any reason to care what some random jerk off on Facebook says about me. I also have lived long enough to know that people like that probably have some underlying issues that are causing them to take it out on social media.

Having said that, I can totally understand why internet bullying leads to depression and even suicide. Especially for youth who may be going through a difficult time with their families, or struggling to make friends, etc. Personally I tend to be snarky because that's just who I am in real life, but it's easy to come off as an arrogant prick without meaning to because it's so difficult to convey tone in internet dialogue. And I think it's important for people to be mindful of that in general.

I'm fairly certain we have many different viewpoints with regard to religion and politics, but you're still one of my favorite posters here.

I think the biggest difference is that those of us who grew up pre-social media are able to compartmentalize things easier. Kids today have grown up knowing only this online hellscape, so they think that's what real life is like too.

I think I agree with you here.  It seems kids blend real life and social media more so than Boomers, and they act accordingly.  Boomers and the social media-unsavvy tend to compartmentalize their real life and social media.  Many act one way in real life, and then use social media as an outlet to unleash their vitriol and awful shit that they wouldn't dare say in real life.

Certainly, both young people and old act like assholes online, but it seems I've had many more negative interactions with the older crowd who think that social media is their "escape" and channel to get out all their negativity.

Harbaugh is 47-18.  Not everything we dreamed of, but one of the 10 or so best records over that time.

But college football has changed.  Only one team can win the Big Ten, and only four can make the playoff.  All non-playoff bowls (even the Rose Bowl) feel like cheap consolation prizes.  We've rarely ever been a top-4 team, but now it feels a lot worse to fall short.  I'm ready for playoff expansion.

Do you really think people are being pissy about this post?  It seems like criticism of this (obviously wrong) post is pretty mild.

I said in a comment that I would bet money that OP is wrong.  Other criticisms include saying it was an "odd post", "shitposting", and asking if OP was serious.  In the context of online discussion, none of that really amounts to incivility or being "pissy".  I'm not seeing the comments that you are finding to be offensive here?

We really do live in an era where everyone finds everything to be offensive

Ummmm, yea.  You can say that again.

I don't think it is because the post is "offensive." It is because it is like the 4th post on this that has no additional substantive information. This could have just been a comment in any of the other threads. And with the aforementioned lack of mods, the board gets jammed with unnecessary additional threads. Like when someone posted OT: Tragic news like 5 minutes after the original post and it sat on the board for a full day before someone bothered to delete the redundant thread.
