OT - Rory - US Open
Rory just posted a second round 66 so he is -11 for the first two rounds and is up 8 strokes on the field at this point. HOWEVER, he was at -13 before that last hole and double bogied it. I am sure there will be a lot of talk about Augusta and him falling apart again. Will Rory hold on and win his first major or will he choke away another major? I for one like this kid and hope that guys like him, Day, and Fowler win some majors in the near future.
I like the kid. He is a class act, presents himself professionally and was extremely mature in how he handled his Master's collapse. On one hand, I think he has learned from it and will use it to his advantage but on the other hand, this is the US Open and you can easily shoot a 66 one day and then shoot an 80 the next. I hope he plays consistently Saturday and Sunday and moves on but I really think this is an extremely tough event to win for a young golfer. We shall see.
I also like Rory. I hope he doesn't choke, because I think he has a great future. He now has that experience from Augusta and I think he has a great chance to win the US Open.
Makes me want to go out and practice.
Very classy. But I always root for Americans in majors, and esp. now that's it been so long since an american has won. The real key will be if someone can get to 5 or 6 under today (maybe Bubba) to put some pressure on rory.
'MERICA!
Another epic collapse and he is Greg Norman 2.0, but I just don't see him losing such a masive lead. I'm really rooting for Robert Rock: paid $24,000 to get an emergency visa and once he got in the states he had a $1000 cab bill to go from DC to the course Bethesda MD
He could have paid $2.75 to just ride the metro instead of $1,000 for a cab...
Also, there's no shot in hell that a cab from DC to Bethesda costs any more than $30 including tip.
Distance: 13.51 km. | Duration: 27 min.
cab fare | $3.00 |
13.51 km. x $0.93 per km | $12.60 |
waiting in traffic (~7 min.) | $1.81 |
Tip 15% | $2.61 |
Total | $20.03 |
I think the cab ride was from NYC to the course in MD. Not sure why he flew into NY.
Then price wise that would make more sense. Though I'm sure a flight into Dulles would be just as expensive and save him 4 hours and $1,000. Strange.
Maybe the flight into NYC was the best direct flight he could get on such short notice?
What? He's in his very early twenties an you're already going to compare him to Norman if he doesn't win this week. That's a bit ridiculous.
2010 British Open- Finished T3 despite shooting an 80
2010 PGA Championship- 3 putted on 16 and missed short putt on 18 to miss playoff by 1 stroke
2011 Masters- Last day leading by 4 and shot an 80 to finish 15th.
Nick Faldo blew a number of majors early in his career. Enough that the British press dubbed him Nick Foldo. However, he recovered and won 6 majors - only 10 people in the history of golf have won more.
the infamous Sat slam
Well, golf certainly needs someone to step up if Tiger continues to decline. Rory winning a couple quick majors would be huge. I'm definitely rooting for him, and I think he could be the best in the world in a couple years.
Though I don't think he'll blow it this time around, I tried my best to find the video of Randy Quaid in Major League 2 saying, "Don't worry, they'll blow it in the ninth. They will, they will! Just watch!"
and I was leaning towards the over before i realized i have no business betting golf.
Pffffft!
A 522 yard par 4 for Christ's sake. I like Rory, and I hope he wins. However, I selfishly would like to see him come back to the field a little bit so it doesn't completely ruin my Open weekend.
Although it is the US Open (long rough, 25 yd wide fairways, rock hard greens & pressure) 522 yards is not that crazy. The hole plays downhill, and the balls are rolling out 25 to 30 yards on the drives because the fairways are so fast right now. That means short hitters are hitting it 290 and long hitters 315+. Having an approach shot of 200 to 230 means guys are hitting 6 irons to hybrids into the green. The game has certainly changed but that is just a modern long par 4.
Over water.
To the flag today it is somewhat over water but the fairway feeds into the front right portion of the green which also slopes to the left and feeds an approach towards the hole.

If he's competing with Tiger's tourney record instead of the field, it's all the same to me.
I just took a bet with my buddy. If YE Yang finishes better than Rory Mac or tied with him I win $20. If not, I lose $10. Yang is even today through 1 and sits alone in second at -3 (8 strokes back of Rory at -11). He shot a -3 yesterday so if he is gonna catch Rory he will need to duplicate that score 3 times in 3 days while Rory just needs to shoot par. I've gotta hope Rory hears those footsteps behind him and judging by what I saw at the Masters and his double bogey on 18 today, I think he will.
Not a bad bet on YE Yang, I'm a big fan of Yang, I went to the last Buick Open a few years ago and saw this Asian guy wearing some ridiculous outfit, and saw him land a buker shot right next to the pin right in front of me and became a fan. Then he beats Tiger at Hazeltine!
I also hope that Rory can hold on and win this, he seems pretty determined to right the atrocity that was the Masters and winning the US Open would certainly do that. If he does win that would be two Nothern Irelanders to win our championship in row so that would make some history.
Colin Cowherd was going absolutely nuts today about Rory's massive lead. He was being downright silly about it. Yes, a 10-stroke lead is great and all, but if you play the game, you know how quickly it can disappear. And they still have 2 more rounds to play. Cowherd is an idiot. (But I didn't have to tell any of you all that.)
Can today hurry up and be over, please? I have 9:12 tee time tomorrow morning and I haven't golfed in 2 weeks.
the first name that popped in my head was Gil Morgan.
rory is a little bitch and I can't wait to watch him choke live on Sunday
Without Tiger Woods to bail our asses out on a yearly basis, we suck in majors, and have for the last ten years. I would love to see Rory win The Open: but not the US Open. I want to see a US flag beside the winner of the US open. Same with the PGA and Masters. I don't know what we need to do to improve, but we need to do something.
International players are better at putting under pressure. They also seem to be a lot better at keeping it in the fairway on difficult courses. Since majors are always either played on difficult courses or the courses are turned into tough courses by the setup crews, we need to figure out what they are doing that we aren't.
Until then, it will suck to watch majors if you are a US fan. At the risk of sounding parochial, selfish, or jingoist, I want to see US golfers win US tournaments.
He'll be leading by 9, and will subsequently hit a pine, a maple, two water hazards, three sand traps, a spectator and a squirrel to lose by two.
Poor squirrel.
What golf needs is for Rory or someone young to start to dominate and then in two years or so, Tiger comes back with vengence. That would be the best for golf. Could you imagine. I mean if Tiger makes a huge run again, it will be big enough, but if you could get one of these young guys to creat a generational rivalry, that would be all the better.
