I was never a big fan (other than the "hits" played on fm) but I have always wondered how they aren't in the rock and roll hof given how popular they were back in the day. I guess their style of music hasn't really stood the test of time, at least w the music critics.

The entire HOF is a monument to Jann Wenner's musical tastes which definitely favor the mid to late-70s NYC and London punk scenes.  My tastes definitely lean to prog rock -- Pink Floyd (obviously), Genesis (both pre and post Gabriel, Supertramp (pre-Breakfast in America), Alan Parsons Project, Rush (Johnny Atkins' favorite band) and Moody Blues.  You can hear some prog rock influence in The Who and Zeppelin which makes them both such fantastic bands since they cross genres.  Not a big fan of Yes, Styx or King Crimson.

I wasn't a huge Yes fan, mostly due to only knowing their radio pop crap.  But then I gave "Close to the Edge" album a listen and was hooked.  "The Yes Album" and "Fragile" are both amazing too.  Basically, all of their earliest stuff (shocker).

King Crimson I could see being tougher to get into.

"Clear and always on key".  Bands of today could learn a good lesson from listening to Greg Lake.  Find a lead singer who can sing well.  And also, write good music.  Yes, I'm an old guy who was a teenager when ELP was starting out.  This is one of my very favorite ELP songs:

Wow, 2016. Greg Lake and John Glenn in the same afternoon.

I was actually just listening to "Brain Salad Surgery" this morning in my office. I have always been a huge progressive rock fan and this is indeed depressing news. It was ELP and a few other groups that, as a kid, got me into synthesizers and synthesized sound.

RIP, Greg Lake.

RIP Greg Lake.  Really sad after Keith Emerson lost his battle with health issues greatly reducing his ability to play.

From the Begining is a classic.  Its actually very easy to play on guitar, even the beginning part with the picking is just moving shapes around on the guitar in standard tuning.  Anyone who plays should give this one a try.  Sounds great, fun to play and not that difficult.

ELP when I was 8 through 15.  A lot of great songs. So Palmer is the lone survivor of ELP. I liked Lake's Father Christmas song back in '72. Brings back childhood memories!

Back in my high school athletics days, elp's "Tarkus" was my favorite album to spin when I got pumped up for a game or track meet.

Later, "Brain Salad Surgery" was one of the best to catch a buzz to.  Just thinking about it makes me want to fire up a bong!

But most of all, Greg Lake's acoustic songs were just sooooo beautiful.  YouTube his solo performance of "Still You Turn Me On" if you need convincing.
