OT: Reggie Bush goes in on Mark Emmert

These are pretty strong words.

I've never had much of an opinion on Reggie Bush, but it's hard to argue with him here. Seeing as how the rules under which he was punished (for the horrific and unconscionable act of engaging in commerce) have since been struck down by SCOTUS as a blatant violation of antitrust law (in a 9-0 ruling, no less), it should probably be Emmert and the NCAA who are put on the defensive now, not Reggie. They should reinstate his Heisman.

I wonder why the NCAA has gone quiet on me? They had a lot to say last year. These are some pretty serious allegations. Don’t run now Mark, the party is just getting started! Mark Emmert is liar, a conman, a thief, but most importantly he is a coward. Hello Heisman Trust 👋🏾 pic.twitter.com/O8JNzm3EOt

Frank, you don’t seem to understand the rules in the first place. The only rules that the courts overturned was an athlete’s ability to license NIL and NCAA limits on “educational” benefits.  There are still rules against impermissible benefits, pay for performance, and recruitment.  There are an entirely different set of rules regarding agent representation.

What Bush did had nothing to do with NIL.  So your first point has no basis. The rules he broke didn't change. What Bush did is still against NCAA rules. What USC did is still against the rules.

There are a lot of NCAA rules. Let’s not just lump them all into one pot.

Some, like NIL, were overturned.

Others, the NCAA evolved on its own.

And finally, there are many more rules that are still in place and enforceable.

He’s probably right, but Bush also drinks some serious hater-ade when it comes to Michigan.

Not that that’s at all relevant to this tweet, but I’m curious if Bush just secretly really dislikes Harbaugh after he and Carroll went through the “what’s your deal” situation. Pretty sure he’s had Michigan not standing a chance against OSU the last two years and that they’d escape Purdue by three in the BTCG.

I never noticed any anti-Michigan animus. Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention. But hell, as a life-long Michigan fan, *I* fully expected Ohio State to beat us the past two years. And ... he actually picked Michigan to win, but not by as much as you thought he should have, and that's evidence he "hate[s]" Michigan?

I don't see it.

Just to clarify, SCOTUS did not strike down the rules which Bush was accused of violating. The SCOTUS decision said the NCAA can't limit the educational benefits NCAA athletes receive. Bush didn't get in trouble for receiving educational benefits.

The SCOTUS ruling happened around the same time the NIL rules got changed so they're often conflated, but the latter was mostly in response to states' forcing the NCAA's hand via legislation, not anything SCOTUS did.

(Though the Kavanaugh concurrence perhaps suggested the NIL rules wouldn't have fared well either if the did come before the Court.)

If we're going back in time, can we give the 2013 UM Men's Bball team the NCAA championship trophy they deserve, after Louisville had to vacate all their wins?

Put up the banners!!!

So what exactly did Webber do again. Take a loan that was paid back in full from a private citizen that had nothing to do with him going to Michigan or playing at Michigan. The wins should have never been vacated, to begin with, and the banners should have never been taken down.

As for merch Jalen Rose owns the Fab Five trademark, so by all accounts, nothing is stopping him from selling merch now.

Upward counterfactual thinking is a pit of despair.

Reggie needs to move on.  The courts, the NCAA decline in influence, and Emmert's retirement don't cause the past to shorten.  Bush should be thankful for what he has in a world that could have given him zilch. He's complaining about a trophy? He wishes it could have been better for him? It could have been worse, and was for many many others before and after him.

Reparations are legit. When we don't reparate all injustice the cases we do define who we want to become. Exactly what is the relative harm here done Reggie Bush? On what scale do we measure it? He had his day, and those were some sunny afternoons.

Counterfactual thinking works best when it changes are future selves, not when it rewrites the past.
