OT: Reddit CFB Risk Update 5/15: Oh How I Hate...

Submitted by AmaizeingBlue on

Yesterday was yet again another step back for us. Ohio State took Maine and Connecticut from us while we got Army and UMASS back. Unfortunately, for some damn reason OSU keeps winning these coin flips from us. We just need to continue to plug along and eventually luck will bounce our way.

We want to thank you guys for your participation and encourage you to please continue to be active for only 30 seconds a day!

Here are the official suggested orders for today if you're a non-Discord user and are just following along from these posts:

Instead of using birthdays to give out orders, one of our members created a Michigan Risk website that can quickly direct orders to users

Please go to michigancfbrisk.com and click on "Get Order!" to get your instruction for the day!

Below are a few messages about recent updates with the game and instructions to join and play if you are new.

The creators of the game recently increased the aggressiveness of their bot detection to prevent the use of bots/alternate accounts. If you have created a brand new reddit account to participate in this game, then we need you to check the game page to ensure you don't see the message in below. If you see this, you are being flagged as a bot and your moves are not counting. Please DM reddit.com/u/bakonydraco to get the situation sorted out.

So follow the instructions and contact the r/CFBRisk mods if that happens. Also, the CFBRisk mods have indicated that they may start marking accounts as bots if they aren't "users on R/CFB". So we ask that in order to keep yourself eligible that when you go to vote everyday: just take a look at the CFB subreddit and make a post or two. There should be always something on the front page Michigan-related that you can drop a quick take on.

Instructions to Join:

To join all you need to do is go to reddit.com/r/cfb and create an account if you don't already have one. Next, set your flair to Michigan. You can do this by clicking "Select Flair" on the right side of the cfb subreddit. Finally, you can join and play the game at https://vote.redditcfb.com/cfbrisk.php

If you want to discuss the game in deeper detail and strategize with us, you can join our discord server found here: https://discord.gg/TcZBTcj. We usually announce plans of what we want to attack/defend in the evenings, but we discuss strategy all day. Be warned though, there will be a vetting process to join the discord as we have had some mole issues from OSU. Even if you don’t pass the vetting process, we can still provide less-secret instructions in the general chat so that you can still help us towards our goals until we can fully 100% trust you.

Additionally, we have formed "The Blue Alliance" with Florida and Georgia Tech. If you would like to meme about this, go to: www.reddit.com/r/CFBRisk/

Go Blue!

Instructions as to how to play:

At the beginning of the game. Every team was assigned one single territory, and so every territory is now named after that team. When you go to select an action in the game, you'll see option such as:

"Defend Buffalo", "Attack Penn State", "Attack Kent State".

This means that we border the location that was originally assigned to Penn State and Kent State. If you choose to attack Penn State, you will attempt to take that piece of land next round. Defend Buffalo, means that we currently own Buffalo's original homeland, and defending Buffalo means putting your stars towards keeping Buffalo from being taken.

After you submit what you're doing for the day, just sit back at wait! At Midnight EST all of the picks from all of the teams go in, and a random number generator selects a winner for each territory. Then it all happens again tomorrow.

Full instructions/explanations are available HERE

Here's the map today from 5/15:

Be more aggressive. OSU is winning coin flips because the game code clearly rewards attacking over defending. Its also why this game will never end as teams will just flip around owning territories because the attacks and defense happen independently of each other rather than one battle.

The game does not reward attacking over defending, otherwise they wouldn't be coinflips in the first place.  They are literally treated the same.  There is no difference.  OSU is winning coinflips for two main reasons:

  1. RNG.  You can't dictate probability.
  2. The rules changed mid-game and severely nerfed most of our army

Tbh, what really happened is that in the beginning of the game we were a little weaker than OSU so we were just randomly swapping MidWest territories for a while. We decided that was pointless so we left to consolidate a better position in the northeast. We grew our army and started hammering through the smaller schools. But unfortunately, no one else has really bothered to push OSU so they've been able to follow us without too much effort. And then we got nerfed right as our confrontation was about start. So now our armies are about equal size. So we're in position to just randomly flip territories at this point. And OSU will slowly lose their territories in the midwest if they are focused on us.

Realistically we will need to help to really eliminate OSU at this point, but we have some ideas to get ourself in a better position.

There is nothing to counter or not counter because strategy is essentially meaningless across the number of territories that exist. They know the places they hold will be attacked, they know some level of defense will exist on the places they attack but because the events happen simaltaneously you just attack the 5 different locations and you are likely to win a few of them. Do it again the next turn. Its nearly impossible to corner a team and this game will never end since once it gets down to 3-4 large fanbase teams they will jjust endlessly swap territories and not be able to eliminate each other.

Bob Ufer used to say when the going got tough for the Wolverines, "the daubers are down here in Ann Arbor".

Seems like the team needs a pep talk.  Wish Gilbert Lowe were available, he might provide the inspiration needed from his battle worn experiences...

"Unfortunately, for some damn reason OSU keeps winning these coin flips from us."

Well, if that isn't an analogy for how this rivalry goes I don't know what is.

One tip for everyone....

If you tend to check the map in the morning before marching orders have been issued, go ahead and make whatever move you want at that time. You can always change it later after orders have been issued.

That way if you forget to go back later, your move will still count for something. An uncoordinated/strategically-questionable move is much better than no move at all.

Sure seems like some funny business is at hand, given the size of OSU vs Michigan teams and how things have played out

A few comments were made about it on the subreddit with people bearing Michigan flair, and have since dissapeared

Something we all should also be doing are the following actions:

1) Click on the links to boost your star rating from 1 to 2 for that feature (need to click on Links and it takes you directly to several Links that are associated to CFB.  Just look around at a minimum of 5 and "presto", you become a 2 star for that section)

2) As noted by the OP, start leaving some comments on other posts.  50 Karma points also bumps you to 2 Stars (It kinda works like the Up voting on here with the Blog).  Again, only 50 Karma point (50 upvotes) and you become a 2 Star there....  I would go as far as saying that we should have a POSBANG thread over on Reddit each day and we could give ourselves "upvotes" which equates to Karma points

3) Days played - At 10 days, you become a 2 Star automatically.....

Now for the more seasoned Reddit people, that would be 3 of the 5 sections that are rated as 2 Star.  Does that make your overall rating a 2 Star?

If I am understanding the game correctly, Star power is the determining factor in "winning / losing" these battles.  Given that we have a large fan base support (1156 at last count).  It would stand to reason that our Star Power Rating would incease faster then OSU.  More Star Power continues to slant the odds in our favor.

Am I understanding the mechanics of this game correctly?

From the main page (https://vote.redditcfb.com/cfbrisk.php) click on the links explorer link. It's at the bottom of the box on the left hand side with your stats in it.  It will open a new page.  On that new page, open every single link (~20).  Once you've done that, go back to the main page and click on update sub karma, and then click on uupdate rating.

And I am a 5 Star for that section.  And in 3 Days, I will be a 3 Star in turns played.  That only leaves the Karma points to boost up.  So again, I propose that each day we start a Reddit thread and we essentially go POSBANG it.  This bumps up our Karma points, thus accelerating us to 3 stars for Karma.

Given how they determine your overall, that would make everyone a 3 Star.  Then we can unleash our fury on OSU....

I followed redditcfb on twitter before this and always thought about joining to read content there. This game pushed me over the edge to create an account. Unfortunately, the experience has been terrible. Between the authentication process, the terrible site design, and the nerf to discourage new users it’s been really disappointing. Instead of becoming involved in the website, I’ve unfollowed them on twitter because of the bad taste from the game. Pretty much the opposite of how I thought this would turn out.
