OT: Red Wings win Central Division
Earlier tonight, the Detroit Red Wings clinched the Central Division title by defeating Minnesota Wild 4-2. This year is the 20th consecutive year the Red Wings have gone to the playoffs. Today is also the 9th time in the last 10 seasons that the Wings have won the Central Division.

Go Wings!
isn't working but I have a pretty good idea of what you're going for.
Edit: nope. I'll get on finding one that will work.
Big jacket.
If I make it down to Gainsville I'll just borrow one of Charlie Weis' from when he lived in the cold.
obviously i'm a fan, but that goal was sick.
They were playing really well during the 3rd period, which was nice to see.
They always turn it on right before the playoffs. Their game always gets to another level, so when they're having a good year even before that, you know it might be a Cup year.
Still are not playing well enough for a long playoff run. Need to step it up.
WINGS NOT GOOT ENOUF FOR ME!
They have one of the most talented teams in the NHL and history would say that they always perform better in the playoffs than in the regular season.
I think the Wings have been knocked out in the first round something like once in the past decade.
Now you've jinxed them.
Chicago is a shell of last years team; assuming they stay in the seven spot I wouldn't be worried.
I'll make a Tiger Woods/ Elliot Spitzer public apology if that's not the case.
SJ could still beat us for the 2 seed.
I AM HOCKEY ANGAR.
THEY NEED TO GET BIGGER ON THE BLUE LINE UNACCEPTABLE
Modern-day dynasty.
Go WANG$
Get the fuck off my thread.
Okay you win MGoBlog, Congrats.

If you vote for me for Poster of the Year I'll vote for you for Douche of the Year.
Be careful, BlueDragon, he might "pee in your butt" if you're making fun of him.
He would love it if I was to bless him by peeing in his butt.
Now do we fight for the 2 seed and play Vancouver (assuming we get past our 1st round opponent) in the second round or settle for the 3 seed? The Canucks are a scary team...
They are. The Wings are 2-0-1 against them this year though. I would like Detroit's chances in 6-7 games against the Canucks.
I don't like the Canucks' goalie. He seems like a sieve to me.
UGLY GOALIE !!
Their backup is a ginger I believe.
I don't think you know what sieve means if you are calling Luongo a sieve...
I don't think your sarcasm meter is working.
I think you play the best that you can, and whatever results you get, you get. I for one would much rather play Nashville in the 1st round than Chicago/Anaheim. I know we have played pretty poorly against Nashville, but those teams have game changers that can be scary come playoff time. Nashville, not so much. #CANTWAIT
But wouldnt the 2 seed mean we don't play Vancouver until the Western Conference finals? Doesn't the 1 play the 4 and the 2 play the 3 usually?
I think the NHL has reseeded in the recent past. I could be an idiot but that does seem right.
Edit: Found. NHL reseeds.
But theres no way a reseed puts a 2 against a 1 in the 2nd round. The 1 will always play a 4 or worse in the 2nd round.
So, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The Wings are now playing for guaranteeing home ice through at least 2 rounds if they get the 2 seed.
Yay, amazing playoff streak!
Boo, bad waving off goals.
Again the Wings had a goal waved off when it shouldn't have been, and Homer wasn't even involved, but rather Abdelkader, who got pushed into the net, and looked to have gotten out of the way. But the goalie flopped, and a ref bought it.
It didn't matter for this game, but Babcock called the ref over to give him what for about the call. Wonder if it'll make a difference come playoff time (though I kinda doubt it).
Juri Hudler was available for comment:
Let's go Red Vings!
Swede!
yes?
As it is every year with the Wings. The talent is there and some years there are injuries (Yzerman and his knee etc.) but the Wings will only go all the way if the goaltending is there. The years when they get knocked out are usually where they receive poor play from the netminders. If the Wings would have been blessed with a career HOF instead of the one offs etc. they would have 7-10 cups easy.
But who's counting?
In the last 20 yr run.
Your goaltending point is somewhat valid but you also have to look at how the Wings allocate their money by position. They're pretty good about forking over the money for D as a way to minimize the pressure on the goalies.
NHLnumbers.com shows the following stats as % of salary. Of course the numbers are skewed because of longer contracts of important D men, but I think the point still holds.
DEFENSE
Season $ (MM) % of Sal. Cap % of SC Rank (of 30)
2010-11 21.833 36.4% 5
2009-10 23.483 39.7% 2
2008-09 23.537 41.0% 3
2007-08 20.668 42.7% 2
GOALIE
Season $ (MM) % of Sal. Cap % of SC Rank (of 30)
2010-11 2.488 4.2% 26
2009-10 2.133 3.6% 28
2008-09 2.167 3.8% 26
2007-08 4.900 10.1% 13
Edit for I'd also like to say it seems like when we get knocked out early, it's by a team with a goalie running insanely hot. I haven't done any research to back that up so I'm just going from memory.
recognize that signing top goalies like Ryan Miller are far too expensive and would not be beneficial toward building a championship team. They are better of allocating more money on defense and forward and have an above average goaltender. Red Wings are doing this philosophy because they don't believe in paying top money on goaltender.
Fuck yea. Even in a really inconsistent season they win the central division! We have it good here in Detroit with hockey people, don't get greedy.
Outside of the Lakers, probably the best organization in North American sports over the past 20 years.
