OT: Red Wings vs Hawks Game 4 Open Thread

Submitted by I Bleed Maize N Blue on

Another big game at the Joe.  Win and step on the Hawks' throats; lose, the Hawks reclaim home ice, and it's a whole new series.  I hope the Wings outhit them, are heavy on the puck, and go hard to the net.  And stay out of the damn box.

TV:  8PM ET on CBC & NBCS

Let's Go Red Wings!

Even as a former goalie, I say no.  Not like throwing a bomb up by two touchdowns.  It's easy to lose track of time as you're playing, and I've seen a comeback of two goals in as little as 25-30 seconds, so no hard feelings in finishing it off.

Always fun to knock down Chicago in anything.  This is giant.  First time the Hawks lose three in a row this season.  Game 5 will be fun.

Wings over Hawks 9-2 over the last nine periods? As someone who grew up playing with Blackhawks fans and heard a lot of shit before this series, this makes me very, very happy.

Quenneville is making this too easy for the Wings. Babcock has a great gameplan, and the Hawks won't adjust. They just keep trying to play their game.

he shook up all his lines and had his team throw stretch passes up the ice all game, something the Wings have struggled with all year.  They mentioned the whole broadcast how the Hawks were shooting away from Howard's glove hand.

They've tried almost everything, except keeping their f'ing captain from taking stupid back-to-back-to-back penalties.

He's worked his ass off in the playoffs to get this shut out and almost came close in a few games but it wasn't to be. Tonight the defense took their blocked shots and helped make that wall Jimmy out up even stronger! Outstanding effort all around for the Wings! One more to go and the Hawks will be done! GO WINGS! I'm starting to sense a destiny of a rematch with Pittsburgh and Detroit again.

This team has been a real treat for long-time Wings fans. After years of being the victim of the underdog, the Wings have turned the tables to become the vaunted underdog themselves. All the essential components are there: clicking at the right time, a goalie playing out of his mind, youngsters from the farm system making key contributions. And after barely clawing their way into the playoffs, they are one game away from the Western Conference Finals.

I've been a lifelong Wings fan, but this is such a unique experience to be treated to.

Exactly my thoughts, it is fun to be the "less skilled" youthful plucky team coaches by Babcock that makes other teams sad.  That said Blackhawks are damn young (only 2 players over 31) but you get the point.  We've been on the opposite side so many times as the favorite, this is so fun.  Reminds me of the Tigers in 06 when they had no expectations.

What a treat this has been. How many times have the Wings been on the opposite side of this script? For the first time since I've been alive, the Wings are the hungry young team winning all the little battles, aggitating the superstars out of their game, and getting timely goaltending.

And the cherry on top is Toews acting like a little bitch and Mr. Chicago Eddie O trying to justify it.

Ok please win this series and also please win Kings so I can go to the Western Conference Finals and talk some smack to my neighbors.  We've been cheering for each other so far, but that will all change next week!

I was wondering what the Wings' playoff history was as an underdog, so I took a look back all the way to 1975, when the playoffs went from 8 to 12 teams.  7th is the worst seeding during this period.  There were 3rd seeds in the Norris division that would have been the equivalent of 6th seeds.

During the current playoff streak, the Wings have been a low seed only 4 times.

If I didn't list a year, the Wings didn't have a low seed.

YEAR SEED RESULT
2013 7th up 3-1 in the 2nd rd
2012 5th 1st rd exit
2010 5th 2nd rd exit
1991 3rd in Norris 1st rd exit
1990   missed playoffs
1986   missed playoffs
1985 3rd in Norris 1st rd exit
1984 3rd in Norris 1st rd exit
1983   missed playoffs
1982   missed playoffs
1981   missed playoffs
1980   missed playoffs
1979   missed playoffs
1977   missed playoffs
1976   missed playoffs
1975   missed playoffs

The Dead Wings era, 1967-83, had only two playoff appearances.

Very surprised the Red Wings were able to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Can't let them back in the series. Finish them now.

Been a while since the Wings have been in the Conference Finals. They're playing very well right now.

the Joe is absolutely electric right now--everyone realizes that the kids need the support and it's amazing rooting for a underdog for the first time since the 1980's??!

Drew Sharp said it best in the Free Press (I know that this is anathema around here, but I believe in giving credit when / where it is due),

Joe Louis Arena rocked like it rarely has in Game 4. The Wings experienced this type of mind-jolting, blood-percolating electricity before. But it was when they took to the playoff road as the fat, pampered series favorite suddenly struggling against a determined underdog.Joe Louis Arena resembled those spring evenings in Edmonton and Calgary when the crowd sensed a No. 1 seed teetering at the edge of elimination and they thought that raising the decibel level might provide that last push. They just might have.
