OT - PS3 vs. Xbox 360
Ok, so I'm trying to decide between getting a Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 and wanted to see what everyone's opinion was. Right now I'm kind of leaning towards the PS3 because it has the blu-ray player but I'm still not sure if that is what I should get. FYI, I just bought a Samsung 58" plasma last night and it is BAD ASS. Anyways, thanks for the insight.
PS3 for sports games, XBOX 360 for war/action games
That's a decent summary. PS3's online capabilities are a bit smoother for sports, but 360 has a much better selection and game qualities (in my opinion) for games like Call of Duty and Gears of War. 360 also has a stranglehold on the Halo series, which is a selling point for some.
As far as quality for HD tv's, I've always thought the PS3 had a slightly better quality feed, but I'm not sure if that was the gaming station or the two tv's i saw them played on.
I have both systems and that is my exact thought. I tell people the same thing.
I previously owned a PS2 and I currently own a xbox 360. I would buy the Playstation. I have had to send my 360 in twice to be fixed, and almost everyone I know, who has one, has sent theirs in as well. Apart from that, you do get the blu ray player, like you mentioned. In my opinion the PS3 is better for online gaming as well. I never had any problems with my PS2, and don't know of any issues with the PS3. That's my two cents, FWIW.
I've been hit with the "Red Ring of Death" on my 360 twice. Hitting the power button and seeing the ring is an extremely traumatic experience that I would never wish upon anyone.
Every time I turn on my 360 now, I suffer through 5 extremely tense seconds while the console loads up and the lights on the front flash. It's really not worth it.
I've never had a Red Ring problem and I've had my 360 for a year now. I think back in the day it used to be a common problem but Microsoft has fixed some of these issues with the newer systems.
The thing I like about the 360 is probably the best thing that Xbox has going for it and that's Xbox Live. They definitely have the edge in Internet play, I believe, because of how developed and extensive Live is.
It's all about preferences though; for the extra $100 or so you get a Blu-ray player and a great system in the PS3, however the 360 has a larger library of games right now but that gap is slowly closing. Either way it's a win-win. I do not regret buying my 360 and would do it again if given the chance.
Plus the ps3's network is free and 360 (I believe anyways) you still have to pay for. I have all 3 ... ps3, 360 and wii and the PS3 is the best in almost all aspects minus game selection.
I have a PS3 and mostly play sports games though my roommate is a big action gaming guy and he has always been impressed when he plays a game of that genre.
In short, I love my PS3, and the fact that it's a blu-ray player is a huge bonus.
I own a PS2 but my girl friends brother owns both. I occasionally game with him and definitely agree with what everyone says here. If it were me, I'd purchase a PS3 because I only play sports games.
Both are pretty good. You really cannot go wrong with either.
Agree. I own a 360, my brother owns a ps3. We both are happy but it sucks that we can't play online vs each other.
I went through this same decision last year and went back and forth before landing on the PS3. I haven't regretted the purchase for a second. I think the games that are on both platforms seem smoother on the PS3, and while the XBox seems to have more action games developed solely for that console, the PS3 is making a lot of progress in this area. Like many others, I play mostly sports games, so the PS3 has been ideal.
I used to play the NCAA football series on my PS2 for several years and got really used to the controls. The switch to the XBoX 360 is still killing me every now and again... too much muscle memory from my PS2. Other than that, I really love my XBOX 360.

I think this pretty much confirms what I was thinking earlier and I'm going to go with a PS3. I already own a PS2 so I won't have to get used to a new controller or anything and the only games that I consistently play are NCAA and Madden so I think I'm alright from that stand point too. That and the blu-ray player is a bonus since I was looking at Best Buy and the cheapest one is still $200.

I own both and prefer the 360. The Blu-ray means nothing to me because I dont but blue-ray discs. As for gameplay I prefer the 360 and most of my friends own a 360 too so it's a lot of fun playing on xbox live. Xbox also has a larger library of games.
Why dont you go to Best Buy and give both a try on the demo?
I own both. I usually go with the PS3. It does have better graphic capabilities and is easier to go HD with (I bought my 360 when it first was released and didn't come with HDMI capability). But there is little difference between the two but for the $50 XBox Live membership v Sony's free online.
My advice is to go with whatever your friends have. You'll enjoy playing them online over playing anonymous 13 year olds and being called gay or hearing racial slurs every five seconds.
(NOTE: I have read that the 360's capabilities have been maxed out, yet PS3's have not. This came from a developer for EA. But I doubt that you would notice a major difference.)
The real answer is just go with whatever you're friends have. If they all have 360, get that. If they have PS3, get that. One of my good friends has both, but plays his 360 all the time because that's what all of his friends play.
The graphics are basically the same, so that's not really an issue worth consideration. The only other tipping point is if you watch a lot of movies, then get the PS3 for the blu-ray -- its a nice add-in. If you like the whole online interactivity thing, then get the 360 for xbox live.
Personally, I have a 360 and a stand alone Blu-Ray player, which I think is the best solution. Outside of sports games, the PS3 just doesn't have a lot of games that are interesting. Although Killzone 2 is pretty damn fun...
Xbox Live is really nice. My friend says that the PlayStation Network can be iffy in some match-ups.
Xbox Live seems to be more reliable in the online area.
I haven't had personal experience with PS3 though.
Side notes as I have both:
360:
- has netflix , well worth the 10 bucks a month in my mind.
- Has downloadable content available for fallout 3 (best game Ive played ever..)
PS3:
- blue ray
- built in web browser
Hands down 360 for the following 2 reasons
- A much better selection of games (because of xbox 360 only content..things like Splinter Cell, Mass Effect, Crack Down, Halo, Gears of War, Fable, and I'm sure I am forgetting some.)
- Better online experience.
As far as the red ring of death goes I wouldn't worry about it much. It was a sodering problem and the new models have been fixed. Also if you don't close the xbox in (like in a entertainment center with cabinet doors) you should be fine.

I had the red ring of death and mine wasn't closed in. It happens, although it's not happening as much with the newer systems (again, I bought mine early.) If it does happen, Microsoft fixes it for free and usually within a week.
for finacially challenged college students, which would you recommend?
360's are cheaper.
360 is ALOT cheaper. That plus a Blu-ray movie for ps3 will cost you about $30.
Also if you can find an xbox live wireless adapter then you can "borrow" your neighbors internet connection for live play.
FWIW I own a PS3 because there is almost nothing that is any good on the XBox 360 that isn't either available and better on the PC or coming to the PC eventually. The PS3 has lots of great exclusives and it makes a good Blu-Ray player
I bought both within the last year or so. The PS3 seems to be a better piece of hardware. The 360 is pretty loud (fan) and has cooling problems apparently. I bought the $300 version of the 360, but then I had to buy a $60 wifi antenna and a membership to Xbox live. The PS3 has the antenna build into the system. If you like games like Fallout, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, etc. then you might want to go with the 360, because there are many more additional games and add-ons exclusively on Xbox live. The thing I don't like about Xbox live is that you have to pay a membership fee just to be able to buy the add-ons and games. You will end up spending less money with the PS3 in the long run. Plus, like you said, it has a blu-ray. If you just bought a brand new HD TV you're going to need a blu-ray player anyway.
I've got a 360 & have friends with each console for the most part I agree with the consensus advice in the thread:
--Generally the the console graphics/experience ~ equal
--If you want Blu-Ray then a PS3 makes sense
--For other, non-sports games the 360 has more & better-rated exclusives (especially of the 'shooter' variety)
However, I felt the need to respond to the notion that one has to pay a fee in order to download games & extra content on Xbox LIVE. There's 2 membership tiers (Silver is free & Gold is subscription-based) & both of them can download demos & buy games/DLC as seen on the link:

BTW, whatever you end up with I recommend trying out Rock Band if you haven't already. Good times with groups of friends & very significant other-friendly....
Can you play online with the Silver membership?
That's the big difference between Silver & Gold (other minor things like Netflix streaming is included with Gold as well).
But if you only want to download LIVE Arcade games or extra content Silver works just fine (MS wouldn't want to keep people from giving them $$$).
For those that subscribe to gold or are considering, note that you can always find 'discounted' 12 or 13 month pre-paid cards online (such as Amazon) instead of paying $60 a year via CC....
a PS3 about a month ago, and have been quite impressed. I've never been an XBOX guy, so it was an easy decision. The fact that the PS3 plays blu-ray, has a built in hard drive, built in wifi, free internet community, and in my opinion slightly better graphics, make it the superior console to me.
Plus I can't wait for God of War 3. LOL.
As far as sports games go, Tiger Woods 10 and NCAA 10 are both impressive, although I am sure they also are so on a 360.
True but the 360 has a built in hard drive as well and more than enough space. You can buy a discounted version of the 360 w/o a hard drive which is about 1/3 the price of a PS3.
You can take everyones opinion but the best way to know is play them yourself and find out. The 360 however has sold a lot more systems and has a larger library than the PS3.
The 360 is cheaper but it is basically a poor man's all-in-one gaming PC that provides you with little that isn't done better somewhere else. Their Netflix service, for example, is worthless if you already use the on demand viewing offered by DirecTV. Depending on how beefy your PC already is, I would also recommend looking at upgrading it if what you are looking to do first and foremost is play shooters and action games. For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone can play shooters with a console controller. Aiming with an analog stick is about as efficient as Steven Threet playing in a spread offense. PC gaming appears more expensive at first, but once you add in all of the extra crap that you get nickel-and-dimed for on the 360, that gap mostly goes away. If you're more into sports though, then PS3 or 360 is the way to go.
Just turned on my 360 five minutes ago and there is a red, blinking ring around the power button (and the screen is blank). I'm assuming this is the red ring of death. What a fucking piece of shit. Fuck Xbox and fuck Microsoft. I'm a little angry right now.
