OT: Preakness Stakes

Submitted by MAgoBLUE on

Orb is the clear favorite at 1 to 1 but who do you like today?  Anyone betting the earlier races? Anyone in Baltimore?  The People's Race is my favorite of the Triple Crown.

The morning lines:

Orb J. Rosario 1/1
Goldencents K. Krigger 8/1
Titletown Five J. Leparoux 30/1
Departing BJ Hernande 6/1
Mylute R. Napravnik 5/1
Oxbow G. Stevens 15/1
Will Take Charge M. Smith 12/1
Govenor Charlie Garcia 12/1
Itsmyluckyday JR Velazquez 10/1

It's a two minute race. If you think this high paced competition that takes less time than it would take to make a cup of coffee bores you, than I'm pretty sure you've never actually watched a horse race before. Try watching it once. I decided to a few years ago and now I love the sport.

The 2nd leg of the Pursuit to the Triple Crown is upon us with the Preakness Stakes post-time set at 6:18pm this evening on NBC.  Orb, the winer of the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, is the clear-cut favorite to win as he sits at 10/13 odds per Bovada sports book.  Orb has been training well all week.

Departing, Mylute, and Goldencents are said to be the main contenders according to the bettings odds.

If anyone is interesting in the races before-hand and pre-race coverage, 2:30pm to 4:30pm on NBS Sports Network there is coverage

With Orb sitting at 1-1 odds, I'm honestly thinking of sitting this one out (betting wise). I had Mylute in the Derby, but have completely lost faith in Rosie. I do think Orb will have trouble in coming out of the first post, and I'm really liking Itsmyluckyday to pull out a shocker. Other than that, Titletown 5 is sitting with 30 to 1 odds, and in a 9 horse field, that's looking mighty tempting...

As I think Orb should win but they are expecting his odds to be 3/5 come post time.  I bet on a bunch of exactas with Orb involved in the Kentucky Derby but didn't hit.  If I were forced to bet, I'd probably mess around with a few exactas or trifectas with Orb winning and boxing the place and show.  I like Itsmyluckyday as well for some reason too.  Goldencents is sort of a speed horse, correct?  So he could do well i this shorter distance but it sounds like the trainer is messing around with his diet and training all this week so he could either do real well or be a flop.

The speed of the track and the distance does suit Goldencents infinitely better than Churchill Downs.  His other good showings/wins we're on tracks that more resembled Pimlico However, I want nothing to do with the 17th placed also ran horse at the Derby that just seemed to completely give up at the last turn.

As for betting exotics, this would be the race to do it.  Unfortunately, lower risk means lower reward, especially if you heard Orb's straight bet odds were expected to go down to 3/5 (combined with the small field).

The only thing I know about horse racing is that there hasn't been a Triple Crown winner in about 35 years, which means it's never happened in my lifetime.  Accordingly, go Orb!

The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978 (the third winner of the Triple Crown in the 1970s), which means the Belmont Stakes which Affirmed ran would have been about a month before I was born. It would be fun to see the first one in my lifetime too.

Here is the complete list of Triple Crown winners, along with the Kentucky / Preakness Doubles (meaning the horse did not win the Belmont) as well as other close calls (LINK).

I still would like to see a horse named "Do The Pose".

much the best, regardless of drawing the rail.  It shouldn't hurt him with his running style and the small field.  As far as betting purposes go, I like Will Take Charge and Oxbow.  Will Take Charge was moving stride for stride with Orb when they started their run in the Derby, and had to check behind a tiring Verrazano.  As for Oxbow, he was the only horse anywhere near that insane Derby pace that finished near the front.  He finally got a decent draw and is due for a trouble free trip.
