OT: Pistons signed Andre Drummond to a max contract
They signed him for 4 years for 130 millions with a player option for 5th year. That's a good signing and well deserved. He is coming off from an outstanding year with his 1st all-star appearance. He averaged 16 ppg and close to 15 rpg. He's only 22 and still has ways to go which is scary.
they should continue to get better as a team. SVG did a wonderful job of overhauling the roster when he took over and now the Pistons have playoff aspirations and hopefully become a contender.
with Dubs, Thunder and Spurs, but the East has the NBA Champion and has more depth than the West.
You mean NBA Purgatory where you're good enough to get eliminated in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs but not bad enough to get a worthwhile draft pick?
That's the worst place to be imo. The Sixers were there for years after AI left until the Process.
Pistons might be on their way to being the Atlanta Hawks unless a couple of those players take leaps in development under SVG. Oh and there's the Lebron blockade they gotta get through as well in the East.
It's okay. At least there will be something to root for in Detroit sports after the Tigers and Wings implode.
Based on the recent signings I've been reading today, locking Drummond up for 5 years/ $130million is a god damn bargain!
By the time the option kicks in, either the Pistons will be "back" or SVG will be gone. His choice will be easy.
Free Throws all the damn time and he's been doing it in practice in which he makes about 70%. It's completely different when you're in the game.
It's the same thing with Shaq. He's been practicing FTs yet is a terrible FT shooters. Big men tends to be shitty FT shooters.
I don't think they used to be though. Jabbar, Moses Malone, Olajuwon, Ewing, Robinson, etc. were all decent to good FT shooters. Allthough, Chamberlain certainly sucked.
Laimbeer shot FT's pretty well, along with long range bombs for a big man during his day. I miss him...
Can we put a clause in his contract so that the amount of money he gets directly correlates with his Free Throw percentage?
Seriously, this is a ton of money for a guy we can't play in the 4th quarter of a close game.
NBA is getting more serious every year about outlawing hack-a-shaq. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a rule change in the next 2 years. I wouldn't worry about his free throws too much, although I never understood why it is so hard for some guys
Find a ring about 10" in diameter, put it 10' in the air and 15' away. Now grab a tennis ball and try to make it through that ring.
Come back and let us know how you did.
Didn't people say the same thing about Shaq?
Drummond isn't the offensive force that Shaq was. And the game is becoming less and less big man-oriented every year, as the Warriors can attest to.

Pretty sure they are looking into enforcing that rule that would disallow the "bang-a-drumm" tactic.
Every team is throwing money around at mediocre players today.
We still have not seen the ceiling on his abilities, and given the market I like this move. I know he's subject to Hack-A-Shaq strategies at the end of games, but he was a steal in the draft and a good value here.
like post moves, passing out of double teams, defensive rotation and being a pest at the paint. Sky is the limit for Dre and he's pretty much just as old as rookies who just graduated from college which is amazing.
I can't wait to see this team reach its full potential. I think we will be a top 3 contender in the East sooner rather than later.
it's time to try the underhand free-throws. 36% from the stripe just won't cut it for that kind of money.
For this amount of money he's got to be willing to try them underhand. He cannot keep on shooting this poorly from the stripe.
Can a guy who is such a liability that he can't play the last 5 minutes of a tight game a max contract guy? That's been answered. Sure hope he overcomes whatever mental/ physical impediments he has with FTs.
I love Drummond, and he's one of the top 4 centers in the league and worthy of a max contract, but I think the Pistons need one more star to be a real contender. Drummond is too offensively one-dimensional to be a title contender's best player. I'm not sure who the answer is, basically have to get lucky and find a sleeper in the draft, since no top-flight superstar FA seems to be inclined to look at Detroit. That said, this was a deal that had to get made and I'm glad it got made.

FT shooting is embarrassing
If they create rule changes that make hacking him disadvantageous- he will be worth the money
