Submitted by Rosey09 on

A video from an Ann Arbor Uber driver getting berated by a college-aged person made the front page of Reddit this morning.

Whenever these videos become viral, it seems like the people in it are identified within hours. How is that done? I imagine a good amount of the people are IDed by people that recognize them, but are there other methods that people use?

Without explicitly revealing who he is, I can tell you his dad is a real estate developer in NYC who is himself fighting battles against his tenants for mistreating them. Apple does not fall far from the tree. I highly doubt this kid will face any consequences. Even socially.

The kid is a TKE, he's screwed. If he would have just berated the driver without the homophobic slurs there would have been no consequences for him other than being labeled an asshole. But he has to go the homophobic route and the school has codes of behavior. And the fact that he's also representing a frat is bad news for him given the thin ice the Greek system is on right now at Michigan. He's going to get what's coming to him.

Alex Baker, the chief information officer for Tau Kappa Epsilon, told BuzzFeed News the fraternity was investigating the video, but did not name Croman. “We are extremely disappointed by the individual’s demeaning words,” Baker said. “At the conclusion of our swift, thorough investigation, we will handle the situation with appropriate action. Depending on the details of the investigation, this could include the expulsion of membership.”

What type of discipline?  For doing what?  Uttering the word "faggot" off campus?  Yelling at someone?  Oooooh.  I just yelled at a guy who cut me off yesterday.  Some people are dicks and deserve to be yelled at and ridiculed.  UM just had a guest, Milo Yiannopoulos, who is going on a tour called "The Dangerous Faggot" tour.

When you are a member of things like universities and fraternities, they expect you to conduct yourself in a certain way according to their codes of conduct.. so yes, recording yourself doing this in public is a problem. He's free to voice his opinions at the risk of discipline by said organizations.

You really thing frats have a problem with their members yelling at someone they have a disagreement with?  So you can never get mad if you go to college or are in a frat?  He didn't do anything violent and made no threats of violence.  He might be an arrogant rich kid but people are overreacting  The Uconn mac n cheese kid threatened and used violence.  This guy didn't do anything that I haven't seen hundreds of times.

You know nothing of the U of M student conduct code. If you did you would known it treats the entire city of Ann Arbor as if it's part of campus. You'd also know it talks about a variety of behaviors that are an issue that this might fall under. And if you've been paying attention to the President of the University you'd know he has zero patience for anything embarrassing from any member of a frat right now. This kid should issue a public apology ASAP if he knows what's good for him.

This story seems to be gaining steam, it's popping up on more sites. Apparently the Uber driver had said he would not drive him any longer after previous incidents, so the kid had his friend order the ride and this happened. And yeah, his dad has a history of issues with tenants in NYC.

I'm not automatically going to side with the Uber driver here. Obviously he did something rather serious to provoke this type of behavior.

I love it how everyone acts like Uber drivers are heroes.  A lot of them are creepy assholes, rapists and murderers.  Maybe wait for both sides of the story?

"Campus newspaper the Michigan Review identified the man in the video wearing the black coat as Jake Croman, who is listed by the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity as a member of its UofM chapter.

Croman is the son of wealthy New York City real-estate developer Steven Croman, and works as an associate at his father’s company, according to his LinkedIn page."

Needs to be kicked out of school.  There's no rule against being rude, but when you start bringing hateful slurs into it you've crossed the line.

Embarrassed the University and himself.  I'm sure he'll be sorry after the fact now.

Will also say that the University needs to get out in front of this ASAP.  Will almost guarantee this is going to make national news (especially at places like NBC)

Let's see...rich kid, hate speech, berating the working class who happens to be a minority. Media will eat this stuff up.

but for me, that diatribe is an invitation to fist city, and i'd say 'yes' instantly.   the only thing a little guy like that understands is consequences - consequences he obviously is sorely in need of learning.

as one of the toughest investigators who ever worked for me said years ago, 'the street is a hard school, but a fool will learn in no other'.

People here are calling for a kid to be thrown out of school over some words on the street? Am I seeing this correctly?!?

When did everyone become so thin skinned and frail? Frankly, Michigan is strongly benefitted having these tough New Yorkers and their money around. I can't imagine any of the "Have Nots" calling for him to be expelled are donating anything to the school....

Meh, it's pretty obvious you either know Croman personally or are just trying to stir things up. No rational person could defend his actions, especially not with the exact same classism and arrogance he used to berate the driver.  I smell a troll.
