OT - Passover Open Thread

Submitted by 1989 UM GRAD on

I hope this topic doesn't violate the "no politics" rule, as Passover is a festival designed to recall the slavery of the Jews and their deliverance out of bondage in Egypt.

But, at the risk of veering slightly closer to politics, the observance of Pesach is also a good reminder that there are still many people in the world who are enslaved and/or oppressed.

We are getting geared up here at our house (just a few blocks from where Seth grew up;  no, I'm not stalking him - he and I discussed this in a thread a while back) to host a lucky 13 of our friends and family.

The table has been set.  The checklist/menu has been written out...so that we remember to serve everything we've prepared (yes, we have gotten to the end of a party, only to realize that we forgot to put something out).  Prep work, chopping, dicing, marinating, etc. has all been completed.

The highlight tonight should be the brisket.  I prepare it using my mom's technique.  Bake at 300 degrees for three hours the night before serving.  Let it cool for an hour...and then slice and put the slices back in the pan with the gravy.  (The gravy consists of chili sauce, a beer, brown sugar, and chopped onions.)  Refrigerate overnight.  Bake for another two hours the next day, also at 300.  It was already very tender when I sliced it last night, which means it should fall off the fork at tonight's meal.

Any other MGoJews here on the board getting ready for the first Seder tonight?  Any family traditions you'd like to share?  Secret recipes?

Chag Pesach Sameach to you and yours!

Passover food is NOT GOOD!  There are a ton of restrictions about what you can and can't cook with and it makes it extremely difficult to cook anything good.

Dessert is usually the worst. Every year various members of my in-laws family attempt cakes and cookies and every year its like a mouth full of sand.

If you think Passover Dessert is bad, you're doing it wrong.

Flourless Chocolate Cake:

  • 4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate or chips
  • 1 stick margarine
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 TB Cointreau or Kahlua, if desired

Preheat overn to 375 degrees. Grease 8 inch round spring-form baking pan. Cut wax

paper to fit into pan and grease. Melt chocolate and margarine together in microwave at

80% power for 2 minutes. Remove and whisk until blended and shiny. Whisk sugar into

chocolate mixture. Add eggs and whisk well. Then sift cocoa into chocolate mixture and

blend until just combined. Place in pan and bake in middle of oven for 25 minutes or

until done (when thin film forms on top). Cool on rack for 5 minutes. Invert onto plate

and peel off wax paper. Dust with cocoa power, powdered sugar or decorate with fruit.

Even in America. FBI statistics say there are more people living in slavery in the United States today than there were before the civil war when it was still legal and cotton was king. Child sex trafficking is a very real problem in 2016.

but Michigan fans have been wandering the desert for a while now.

Until we start consistently beating OSU and MSU again, I can say without a hint of hyperbole that we are truly the most oppressed peoples of the Earth.

Where's our brisket, man?

Matzo ball soup FTW. And I am going to destroy me some brisket. For what I am going to do to tonight's dinner, my family will shun me, and members of the community will not allow their daughters to marry me. Our brisket recipe is a bit different: we don't slice it like a Texas style brisket, but instead let it keep its fall-off-the-bone textures. Add in a good spicy marinade, and you can see why I think my family does brisket better than anyone.

that everybody could be adult about things and act accordingly, but I do not have a good feeling about this thread.

But your brisket sounds good man.  I can say unequivocally that it may be better than the boxed Stouffer Chicken Enchilladas that I am having tonight.

Did you find kosher for passover beer for the brisket?  I know an Israeli company was working on such a thing, but I didn't know it was on the market yet.

I love that this is a GEAT way to remind us of the terrible conditions MANY people in this world face.

Sometimes, mythology serves a purpose.

But I've got mad respect for any group that eats gefilte fish.  And even more admiration for my Jewish friends who swear up-and-down that it's delicious.

Chag Sameach to all celebrating Passover.

Not sure what the proper salutation would be since I'm not Jewish, but coming from a protestant Christian - all the best to you and yours today.

I hope this thread receives a better fate than the 'Happy Easter' thread.

I came to this thread awaiting the play-by-play to see if the ghost of Elijah had entered the room and sat down for dinner.

Happy Passover!

My wife and daughter are Jewish, so happy Passover to everyone celebrating. But to rep my religion, I'd have liked for the Easter thread to have been kept up as well.

Passover started today and we needed to call my sister and the cousins because they are Jewish and we are not. The youngest asks me what Passover is. I started to explain about the bad guy who enslaved the Jewish people and they escaped and he goes "oh yeah, Hitler". Wayyyy before that, kid.
