OT - old guy in student section

Submitted by CJRockford on
So quick backstory. I'm old, turning 41 in May. Lifelong Michigan fan, went to college in Florida but never finished. Moved back to Michigan in mid-2013. Decided to finish my degree, so I enrolled part-time at UM-Flint and started in January of this year. All that brings me to the fact that I'm eligible to buy student football tickets for only $175 for the entire season! My question is am I going to be totally out of place in the student section and/or am I going to be the creepy old guy at the club??

and sit in the top row on the periphery or elsewhere on the periphery.  No one will know you are in the student section or care.

You might get crap from an asshole every once in a while, but I don't think it would be too weird. You'll have to be cognizant of the fact that you might make some of them uncomfortable: even if you aren't actively being creepy, they'll feel like somebody's parent is nearby, and that's fair enough. But you should also be able to make friends with at least some of the people around you (e.g., nerdy types who are actually watching the game will be much friendlier to you than drunk Greek system people). If you read this blog, you are liable to know more about the team than most of the people around you, and sometimes I made friends by being able to answer people's questions about what had happened or who a player was when I overheard them.

The real problem will be that it's a little bit obnoxious to sit in the student section on a regular basis once you're an adult. If you end up near freshman because of however they decide the pecking order for seating now, you might have to dodge puke occasionally. You'll have to stand on top of somewhat narrow and unsteady bleachers all game and your knees might not like it after a few games or even a few hours. You'll sometimes run into people trying to cram too many bodies into too few seats and then you'll be uncomfortable all game because of teenagers with no respect for anybody else. Etc.

Basis for comment: I finished my final Michigan degree at 30, so I sat in the student section well into my late 20s. The last couple of years I stopped sitting there, and I didn't even buy student season tickets my last year, because they won't do spousal tickets and I wanted to sit with my wife (and my family's tickets are on the 44, so yeah).

out of place definitely.   Creepy, don't know depends on what you look like.  What the heck, you ARE a student!   Go and have fun.

They'll definitely recognize you as an older guy(unless you've aged well, which I have as a 29 year old who could pass for 25 or younger). But I remember being wasted in the student section with people's parents nearby and I talked with them without even thinking anything was problematic. Fact of the matter is that students are usually borderline blackout at games, and the ones who would care about something like age are pretty much outcasts already. There's absolutely no reason to think of yourself as the "old guy" unless you are awkward about it. A good rule of thumb is to be really drunk as well.

Well sort of.  When I was about 13, my mom went back to finish her degree at UM-Flint, and got student tickets.  She was 40 something, her and I went together, and it was quite an education.  I would sit back and marvel at the girls and the drunks, and she would complain about not getting to sit on her assigned number in the bleachers.  Every game she would bring down an usher to move some drunk girl or guy out of "our seats", and we'd get heckeled for the rest of the game.

Know what?  Didn't matter, I loved it.  Couldn't wait to get my own tickets when I became a student, and my mom and I still laugh about it.

I was a 39 year old MBA student.  I've been told I don't look old and aged really well (still the same pants size as undergrad days).  The kids liked having an old guy in class.  Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've graduated out of the COY, it's good that there's another "Guy who drives down from Flint for this" to replace my niche in the section.

If you think 41 is old, then you are probably going to act awkward, which wil come off as creepy. When I was a grad student in the upper levels of the student section, there were always 'older' folks there. Here's a news flash - you are not the first, or only, person go to school later in life. Its actually quite common. Get over it.

I'm 42, and I would have no problem acting a drunk 18-20 yr old watching a Michigan Football game.

There are some things that I recall being different

- Higher level of alcohol consumption.

- The freedom and willingness to show how much you have consumed

- Standing (wish the whole stadium were like this)

- Screaming (true fan)

- Lots more touching (positive experience if surounded by the female persuasion)

- etc...

this is a generalization of my experience as an "old" guy sitting in the students section, not a description of every student.

in the big house to watch my favorite football team!  Back when I was a student it was fun since a lot of your friends would attend the game with you. Even after I graduated and was a season ticket holder in the mid and late 80s we would stand much more than sit during the game just like the students! During my last visit to the big house during the 2013 CMU game, I did notice a lot more people just sitting throughout the game!

I was in my late 30's when I finished my MBA in the evening program.  I'd done my undergrad at Michigan too, so I had a ton of seniority (back when it mattered, I guess I'm not sure if it does anymore).  Anyway, I was already a football season ticket holder, so I didn't need football tickets, but I did get a pair of student tickets for basketball, and it was a lot of fun.  Usually I'd take one of my two young boys, who heard an earful, but the undergrads (especially the girls) were great to them.

50.  I am 50.  I sat in the Maize Rage this year for a game.  So I hope you are NOT a creepy old guy cuz what does that make me?

Side note:  If I was creepy, I got some redemption by having my daughter wear a maize "Harbaugh Now" T shirt and made it to the video screen.

Seriously though, you should definitely do it. No one will care. People are high fiving and hugging strangers when big plays happen all the time. But if you can get to know the people around you, or find someone to go with you'll probably feel a little more comfortable. Or bring a flask, then you'll make lots of friends.

will be fine.  the students are usually pretty friendly, if you were standing next to me, I know I would do my best to make you feel right at home.

back in the early 80's my dad was about your age and a student at Michigan. Not only would he go but he would bring me into the student section as a 7 year old. NOBODY gave a crap. Some even thought it was funny that I would do the bullshit chant when Michigan got a bad call. In short, nobody will care and have fun as you deserve to be there just as much as anybody else sitting in that section.
