OT- NFL/Lions Open Thread

Submitted by MGoBeer on

The board seems pretty slow today so I was hoping we could have an all encompassing NFL games thread. If not it can solely be devoted to Lions-Raiders at 4. Hopefully we pull out another win on our way to a playoff berth.
Right now the Chiefs are beating the undefeated Packers 6-0 in the third quarter. If GB loses this game, there is a pretty good chance they rest starters against the Lions in week 17.
Bears are beating Seattle 14-7, about to start the second half.
A certain heavily-covered game should be on CBS in most markets, starting at 4:15. Please discuss it in a reasonable way. No reason to bring up anything but on-field play. Please prove we can have nice things.
Who's watching football today?

Niners still have to play home v pitt, at Seattle and at St louis.  They will likely lose 1 of those.

New Orleans is home v Atlanta and Carolina.  They will likely go 13-3 and get the bye.

We should root for Baltimore tonight because if SD loses they will be 6-8 instead of 7-7 and alive in the division.  We want them with as little motivation as possible next week.

Possibly play a down SD team and a starter-resting GB team to lock up an 11-5 record and the 5 seed.  Which means we'd play at NFC East winner instead of NO/SF.

This Lions team isn't great, they do a lot of annoying things, and they probably are going nowhere in the playoffs. But after the last decade, I'll take it.

I'm excited because I think this team can only get better. They are young almost everywhere (except the OL) and can use the draft to fill holes and improve, not look for key pieces like they have had to over the last few years. Hopefully Stafford gets more consistent with experience, the stupid penalties subside, and we get a running game from somewhere.

Rhetorical question: why is everyone talking about Tebow the 4th quarter God, when Stafford and the Lions have had almost as many spectacular comebacks this season? Actually, don't answer that. I know why.

But also because "Detroit is dirty" is a better storyline for people than Comeback Cats.

Anyway, even if they get to the playoffs and still can't win in the first round, it's something to build on.  Give us a healthy secondary and running back corps (I know all teams get hurt, but dang, spread it around a little maybe) and bolster the O-line in the draft and I like where things are headed.

The "Detroit is dirty" meme fits in with all the hate stories the national media has been spewing about Detroit and the state of Michigan for the past few years. It goes well with the incorrect perception the media has created that Detroit is some kind of "Beruit on the St. Clair".

Denver, according to our lovely media, is simply the paragon of everything right with America and a bastion of clean living.

I had a weird sense this was going to happen.  Just too explosive of an offense, and Oakland has been in shambles for a couple of weeks.  And it's not like the offense wasn't humming along - it kind of shot itself in the foot with drops, but there were points left on the field.

Great win, and with NYG and the Bears losing, that really opens up opportunities for this team if they win next week.  Week 17 against Packers should be good, though losing today probably will lead to fewer starters by the Packers.

They have a ways to go obviously, but they are legitimate playoff caliber team now.  I can only imagine how effective they would be iof Leshoure and Best were healthly. One can only hope both players can come back from their injuries. If they do and they can improve their line, they have the makings of a Packer-caliber offense.

Defensively, they have to re-sign Avril and add a a LB who can hold up against the run better than Levy. He is not cut out for the wide 9. They also need to improve the tackling in the secondary.

The priorities in the offseason are this: re-sign Avril, get some quality young linemen on the OL, and improve depth on defense. I am hoping for a playmaking LB and CB lto go with Suh and Avril, but I'll settle for guys who can do a solid job.

Oh and all Lions fans must hope and pray Best and Leshoure can get healthly. The lack of a running game is why this offense is so inconsistent.

I'm excited to see what management is going to do over the off season and of course with the draft; they've made all the right moves ever since Millen was fired.

We still have a lot of football to play this year; we need to win against the Chargers this Saturday; we can't anticipate a victory over the Packers, that's for sure. I can see the Seahawks sneaking up on us by winning their last two games and we losing our two.

The hope against the Packers is they have already ruined their perfect season, so they will be resting most of their starters for the last game of the season. They should already have home field advantage sewn up.
