OT: new Pink Floyd album comes out tomorrow

Title says it all. First new album in almost 30 years. I’m a big Pink Floyd fan, so this pleases me immensely.

As per usual the title definitely does not say it all. A new single was released Today, there's definitely not a new album coming out tomorrow. Also, River Waters infant involved. That's like the Beach Boys without Brian Wilson.

I get your point. Roger (River) wrote good songs, but David wrote some beautiful music and is one of the best blues/rock guitarist of all time. David is also a 10x better vocalist than Roger could ever hope to be.

I don't want to take away from what River did for Pink Floyd, but David is a far more well rounded musician. If River doesn't want to be involved that's on him, and it's a pity really, because this is for a cause, neither of those gentlemen need money. River should put aside his squabbles like he did for live aide.

Maybe River wasn't even invited.

I think I'd mostly agree with you. The thing is Waters without Gilmour you branch too far into the psychedelic or experimental. They needed the balance of one another.

Waters wrote great lyrics. Gilmour wrote great music and is a better overall instrumentalist and singer.

I think they're both brilliant I just enjoy Gilmour more overall.

WindyCityBlue (I'm assuming you're in Chicago 😊),

I'm heading to Chicago for a conference tomorrow and leaving on Sunday. I haven't been there in years and am looking for any good recommendations near my hotel for eating (nothing too fancy) tomorrow night and maybe somewhere to grab a nightcap. I'll be staying at the Palmer House. Someone else already made reservations for our group at the Russian Tea Time restaurant on Saturday night. Any suggestions in the area?

Blue@LSU, I saw this the other day:

I've been to a few places on the list and my experiences have been generally great. They don't all have break-the-bank entry points. Kasama and Galit look interesting. (Haven't been to either ...)

I think Russian Tea Time is pretty solid.

Thanks for the link, Blue Haze! Much appreciated. I'll look into these.

Unfortunately, between not getting to my hotel until 7ish on Friday and being busy all day Saturday I won't have much time to enjoy one of my favorite cities. But It'll still feel good to be back there again.

Yo!

I'm just getting back to this post.  Crazy 24 hours!

To everyone.  This song is the first that will be eventually be part of album, so I was kinda correct.

To Blue@LSU.  The Palmer House is in an area (the Loop) that doesn't get a lot of traffic on the weekends, especially with COVID effects still lingering.  With that, if you don't want to travel too far and you want some good food (nothing too fancy), then here is what I recommend:

  • 3 Dots and a Dash
  • 222 Tavern. I went there a month ago and the crowd was light, but food was good
  • If you are looking for a fun eat, then maybe try Brando's.  It used to be called something else, and I haven't been there in maybe 8 years, but it can be a lot of fun.
  • Untitled.  Cool speakeasy scene with great food.
  • Giordano's.  OK, so if you are looking for Chicago style pizza, then go here.  I'm not going to send to Pequods, which is far from your hotel

I think The Wall gets too much flack for simply being popular. It's a good album. Not as good as Wish You Were Here or Dark Side of the Moon, but I'd put it ahead of the others you named.

Meddle is underrated as well though. Good on you for putting that on first.

Rethinking as I'm typing perhaps I don't have much of a quibble on your list except Animals. I'd put that behind The Final Cut. I know, blasphemy. But by The Final Cut they were great musicians technically in addition to their innate talent.

Speaking of The Final Cut. I can't imagine if Waters opposed the Falklands War he would be on board with Ukraine-Russia no matter how noble the cause.

agree with vlady on the beatles.  not that they stunk, and i recognize that they were pioneers in some great ways, its just that their music is and always has been just 'okay'.  not bad, but not earth-shattering, either.  my favorite beatles song is 'twist and shout', and i'm pretty sure they didn't write that one.

One of my old bosses had a running argument about The Beatles. I have always maintained the 60s Motown sound (really created by one guy) was better than the Beatles' music.

Hard to argue with a guy who was a walking jukebox of music from that era, but The Beatles will always be that band like the Foo Fighters to me. No bad music, in fact it's all good. Just not good enough to buy.

I think he's fairly well-regarded, particularly amongst guitarists.

His legend could have been much greater had he honed his writing skills more.  He had admitted that he had been lazy when it came to song-crafting, which is a big part of why Waters dominated the credits in the late-70s/early-80s.  That's a shame, because I think "Fat Old Sun" showed that he had talent as a writer.

It's a good thing he eventually married an actual writer who would take over the lion's share of his lyric-writing.

It’s a new version of a song by Ukrainian singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk who's now backed by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Nick Mason. It was released previously by Khlyynyuk and David Scott known as The Kiffness, a South African musician and producer, to help raise funds for the Ukrainian armed forces.
