OT: MSU AD Hollis gets nice new contract

Submitted by Chi-Blue on

Really cant argue with the success over his tenure with the major two programs. It will be intresting to find out what happens over the next 3-5 years if the BIG 2 and little 10 come back in football, and we continue the upward move in hoops as well. Either way, a nice pay boost for sure!

They really aren't any better in basketball the last couple years than they have been for all of Izzo's tenure, so it's hard to give any of that credit to Hollis.  As for football, they've had a two year run, we'll see how long they can parlay that.

Our contractors have rolling contracts here - my understanding is that it basically means that the terms are reviewable on a periodic basis (typically a set date for review each year, like Hollis' contract), and the contract can be ended at any point so long as porper notice is given by the terminating party, but there is no specific end date on the contract. If Hollis passes muster every July 1st from now until he retires or passes on, it is in essence a lifetime contract.

That being said, I believe there are executives that have such contracts who can potentially use the "rolling" aspect of the contract as golden parachute of sorts, since sometimes compensation is tied to the duration of service and / or the rolling term itself. I wonder if Hollis has such a clause...

Hopefully, one of our esteemed MGoLawyers can correct me if I am wrong - I only have dealt with these from a management standpoint.

I can argue with his "success."  Basketball has gone down, football spiked but Sparty couldn't win a BCS bowl, and criminal activity on the part of players in the basketball, football, and hockey programs, both prosecuted and unprosecuted, has been at an all-time high.  Football might go back down to something more Sparty-like starting this year, too.

They beat Michigan in football four times in a row, though.  Apparently, that was THE deciding factor in giving the AD a raise.  School and the safety of the student body are now secondary to wins and losses in East Lansing.

I guess I do have to give Hollis a compliment, though.  If it was this "wild west" in EL when Saban was there, he may never have left, and Sparty might be as dominant a football program as they pretend to be.

Interesting hypothetical with Saban staying at MSU.  He never would have been able to out-recruit us to be a legitimate challenger, but he definitely would have bitten enough off in-state recruiting to weaken our talent pool.  Amazing considering what he's done at LSU and Alabama (albeit in a shady conference) that he was never able to overcome our historical advantage.

True but his recruiting pitch now'adays goes something like "Hi, I'm Nick Saban and I can get you to the NFL" ala Calipari at Kentucky.  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Nick wouldnt be able to say that line had he stayed at MSU (few players making it but not the multiple 1st round picks) and the big show is the main draw for some of these kids.

spent quite a bit of money to improve their facilities like baseball, softball, soccer under his watch.  The baseball success cannot be denied, that was a crappy program for a long time.

New hockey arena in the works so he's definately making his mark on MSU athletics, having grown up around here he is by far the best AD they've ever had and its by miles.  Stupid tweets and Jersey Shore star invites or not.

I am reading everyone discussing the success on the field and court, but I have always considered the most important job of an AD as setting up the programs future success. It's seems like he is doing a decent job of upgrading the facilities, making them more attractive to recruits. Also, as he has stated before that he wishes he had a "Michigan budget". After hearing about these upgrades, it looks like he has made improvement in the donation area. That doesn't hurt when it comes time for a contract extention.

he's done the best they could with the money they have.  For instance, the baseball stadium is a nice upgrade.  Before it was basically a terrible MAC level facility, after improvements at least it could compete in the Big 10.  Its still a terrible field and design, but it looks nice.  With a Michigan budget they could have moved the diamond over a few feet and rid themselves of that terrible hill in the outfeld and the short  RF line.

an official decision has been made either way.  Renovating Munn is where Holis is leaning, and its largely suspected he's doing this to try and entice someone to make a large donation for a new facility.

Either way, he's making improvements to their overall facilities and thats more than most of MSU's have ever done combined since the 80's, other than Breslin maybe even the 60's.
