“When asked how he would coach his son, Gunnar, if the situation arose: “I told him, if you come to Oklahoma State, I’ll coach you like I do everybody else… If you’re the best player, you’ll play. If not, you won’t play — even though I’m sleeping with your mom.”

“When asked how he would coach his son, Rhett, if the situation arose: “I told him, if you come to Arizona, I’ll coach you like I do everybody else… If you’re the best player, you’ll play. If not, you won’t play — even though I’m sleeping with somebody other than your mom.”

Has to be.  Two HOF backs including the arguably best one in history.

When Oklahoma played OSU in 1987, Barry Switzer supposedly issued an order for his team to avoid injuring Thurman Thomas at all costs.  He told them, “you think he is good, wait until you see the backup”.  Cool story.

Gundy was a pretty good passer in his own right.  The Big 8 doesn't exist anymore, of course (RIP 1995), but Gundy had 1000+ more career passing yards than anybody else in Big 8 history.

Those OK State teams in the late 1980s were good.  They just couldn't get past the pair of OU and Nebraska.  They scored 42 on Nebraska in 1988.  Problem is they gave up 63.

I was gonna say that Gundy actually threw a lot for the time. Those Oklahoma State teams also had Hart Lee Dykes, a big wide receiver who went in the first round to the Patriots. He only played a couple of seasons, though, in large part due to an eye injury after a scuffle outside a bar (see here).

Dykes recruitment involved a bidding war between Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Illinois; all four of those schools ended up on probation after Dykes testified against them (see here). Dykes received immunity from the NCAA for testifying so he didn't actually lose his eligibility.

I think John McKay pioneered that response.

He was USC's HC in the 60s and 70s and recruited his son to USC. When a reporter asked him about that experience, McKay replied "I had a distinct advantage. I slept with his mother."

I don't recall Lloyd Carr ever using that line when Jason was on the team in the Tom Brady/Drew Henson years. But when someone asked him if he played favorites when it came to picking a starting QB, he said something like, "If I was going to play favorites, I'd start my son."

Best coaching rant ever in CFB!

The best NFL (and overall) rant in history is "If you want to crown them, then crown their ass.  They are what we thought they were, and we let them off the hook!"  RIP Dennis Green

Mora was incredible.  Between (1) "Playoffs?", (2) "Diddily-Poo", and (3) "You think you know ... but you don't know ... and you never will" he arguably has three of the top 5 (!) NFL coaching rants ever.

Drew & Mike (WRIF) had #3 as a drop for a lot of years back in the day.

Mora had lesser-known ones too, of course.  My favorite lesser-known rant is below.

A reporter (Ron Swoboda, the former New York Met!) mentions that the Saints may be eliminated from the playoffs prior to playing their 16th Game, rendering that game "useless."  Wrong choice of words!

Gundy is a yokel who recently blamed the ills of college football on “liberalism.” This despite the fact that his school’s billionaire benefactor is T. Boone Pickens.
