OT- The Masters

Submitted by SAMgO on

Sunday at the Masters is always one of my favorite sports viewing occasions of the year, and this is shaping up to be a really fun final round. I think Speith holds on, 16 under after 3 is truly unreal at Augusta. The best score ever in this tournament was Tiger at -18 in 1997, so Speith has a real chance to make some history this afternoon. It'll be interesting to see if Phil makes a bit of a run today as well.

Tiger is tied for sixth at the moment, if I remember the standings - which recently updated on my laptop - correctly. Considering recent struggles, that's a decent showing and perhaps a sign that he's finding something he hasn't had in a while. Time will tell, I suppose. The OP is right though - Masters Sunday is usually an entertaining watch.

Let's turn this into a Sunday Funday drinking thread...

Was really hoping Tiger would have sank that birdie on the par five and start making a push to the top of the leaderboard. Too bad he parred it and Jordan got himself another birdie on the first hole.

One golfer was in the lead, forget his name, but his ball ended up on a patch of dirt. The judge on the course told him it would be okay to heal it on the ground when doing his practice shot.

As he goes to finish the round, the judges in the pro shop or whatever inform him to that it would be a one stroke penalty. All causing him to lose the major. Believe it or not, the refs got involved and caused him to lose the tourney.

No game is safe of the referees.

and as happy as I would be to see him stage a real revival--make a run for Nicklaus's record--and happy as I will be just to see him quiet the haters (despite not being that great a guy), I still find it a bit much that the media is so obsessed with him (CBS Sports: How Tiger Can Still Win It, Etc.) when he's ten holes back. . .

Guess he sells a lot of gear?

Contrary to your claim, lots of people watch the Masters whether or not the former best golfer in the world wins the tournament. This is like the Kentucky Derby where viewership expands beyond fans of the sport. Would be healthier for professional golf to move beyond the Tiger era while there are good young players that can compete for the next 10 years.

Exactly. I watch as much of the majors as possible every year regardless if Tiger is playing. Despite what the guy above thinks, the PGA did exist before Tiger and will certainly continue after he's done. While Tiger certainly broadened the fanbase of golf, it will always have a loyal following. The Masters has always been one of the, if not the most, difficult ticket in all of sports to get ahold of.

Yes people watch the masters yet viewership has skyrocketed since Tiger started and viewership declines when he is not in a tournament. Those are facts. What boggles my mind is the vehemence that people have in their anti Tiger tirades ( yours not included as it was not anti Tiger). The media will move beyond Tiger when Tiger retires not before and if people can't handle that that's on them.

I'm not anti-Tiger, but more of a Phil fan. I just think the PGA and the media that covers it needs to move away from being Tiger-centric. He's just not consistent anymore and seems incapable of staying healthy throughout an entire season. Frankly, they shouldn't rely on Tiger to keep golf interesting for the masses. The depth of good and interesting players is better than its ever been. Guys like Bubba, Rickie Fowler, Rory, and obviously Spieth are all very young and capable of providing great and interesting golf for the next 10+ years. I'm not saying ignore Tiger, but treat him as he is - an aging superstar whose working his game back while a wave a young talent takes over the golf scene.

He got injured.....again. No HGH for the fella. He's a has been. Golf needs to sell Rory and the other young guns like they did Tiger. Time to turn the page.
