OT: Mariota and Winston Are What We Thought They Were (Combine Results)

Mariota threw 13/15 on throwing drills, ran a 4.52 40 and had a 36 in vert

Winston threw 16/16, ran a 4.97 40 and had a 28 in vert

Winston's a more polished passer; Mariota is a better athlete.

Chip Kelly was paying attention to Mariota for sure. Kind of scares me as an Eagles fan of the lengths he might go to getting him. Wouldn't want to pull a Washington with RG3 mortgaging the future of the team...

I think the Bucs will still take Winston #1 and Mariota will fall to around 6-10... Eagles might make a play for that Jets pick.

I think Winston will be a better football player than Mariota, as long as he stays on the field. Obviously, if he's suspended, in jail, or doing his best JaMarcus Russell impersonation, he won't appear in games, but if the team that drafts him can convince him to value the opportunity he's getting, he'll be a fine quarterback. I'm not saying Mariota won't be any good, but I think his highest end seems more in the Randall Cunningham mode, where he's really good or great-ish, but not solidly in the top tier at his position.

If I was an NFL GM I might think twice about drafting a QB with a high pick. Obviously they work out sometimes with guys like Luck, but it seems like more often it's not worth the risk. We've seen guys like RG3, Sam Bradford, Geno Smith, Jake Locker and EJ Manuel come in and be pretty awful. I'd be trading down out of the top picks and trying to build a solid core and trying to poach QBs later in the draft or in free agency.

I'm certain they do think twice, thrice even. These teams have war rooms full of people who think twice before pulling the trigger on a draft pick. All the quarterbacks you listed have the physical or mental tools to be good. The problem is the physical tools might show up while the mental tools go off into the clouds, or vice versa. Or maybe the coaching isn't right for the individual quarterback. Maybe the system doesn't work. There's so much room for human error in football, because it's not just bigger, stronger, faster athletes beating up on smaller, slower, weaker athletes anymore. The draft is a crap shoot. The contracts demanded by high picks and given out by teams make the draft even more ridiculous. They should earn a big contract after proving their worth over a couple of seasons.

Read somewhere that Lovie Smith loves Winston and that was a big factor in hiring his OC. One guy, I forget who wasn't crazy about Jameis and that took him out of contention. Trestman liked him and got the job.

Didn't you see his interview? He's going to be playing in a SB this next year against the Peyton's and Brady's. He knows he looks good too.

He will go the way of Ryan Leaf and be arrested for some felony within the next decade.

Personally I thought Winston looked good today in drills. He may be cocky but what do you want them to say? I'm going to be mediocre next year? Do I think he will be Manning or Brady, no but he's not that bad of a talent. I see him more like Newton.

He would have to consume Michael Phelps-like calories for quite a while to rival Jamarcus, who I believe weighed 300 pounds shortly after being drafted. Winston is the guy who will be great or awful-no in between, probably a coin flip as to which one.

Both Winston and Marriota appear like great picks going into this draft but what separates Jemarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf from Payton Manning or Tom Brady?   There isnt a metric that you can use because evaluating this position and success in the NFL is obviously complicated.  It depends on such things as fit to the type of system, competence of the coaching staff, disipline of the player, personal life situations of the player at the time, team support etc.  Jemarcus Russell for instance looked like a world beater-can't miss pick.  In comparison to previously successful NFL QBs, he had better numbers coming out of college than Payton Manning did and was obviously a much better athlete but Russell went to a poor coaching environment at the Raiders with the coach (Lane Kiffin) feuding with the owner (Al Davis) and in spite of that looked like he was slowly improving in his 2nd season but then it appears due to personal problems didnt progress in his 3rd season.  Like I said its complicated and the failure rate for QBs drafted would be an interesting study that I would think is very high.

Really tired of the responses with attitude but obviously not bothering to read a comment or make a thoughtful response. I said he had better numbers coming out of college than Payton Manning. Russell 2006 QB rating was 167 http://www.totalfootballstats.com/PlayerQB.asp?id=1203389 Manning 1997 rating was 147.7 http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/peyton-manning-1.html

Take it down a notch tiger.  You're the only one I see throwing attitude here.  Ccdevi's comment was only pointing out that Peyton had better overall career while Jamarcus really only had one monster year, which is a perfectly valid observation.

What he said was that Russell's numbers werent as good as Manning which is simply not true.  I dont mind disagreement its when someone doesnt do their homework before making a comment.  Now sporto go back to doing your homework before your mom yells at you.

I definitely think Winston will be a much better pro than Mariotta for all the reasons stated above.  Schooled in a pro-style offense, better arm strength, ability to read defenses, played under center and ran the the team out of a huddle.  All the stuff the NFL looks for basically.

Then again I was very excited when the Browns drafted Manziel so what the fuck do I know.
